The state of Texas has not fully recovered from last year’s hurricane, Harvey, as it prepares for a new season of storms. After a teleconference with President Trump and Federal Emergency Officials, Texas governor Greg Abbott said that they were taking steps on a daily basis to make sure they would be able to address any coming challenges.
Hurricane Harvey brought record rainfall to a wide range of Texas and more rain fell over a five day period than at any time, since records have been kept in the United States beginning in the 1850s. Last year’s deadly hurricanes including Harvey, Irma and Maria caused mass destruction in large parts of Texas, Louisiana, the South Atlantic states, the Caribbean and Puerto Rico. Trump praised what he called best recovery and response efforts to the disasters. They were gathering every accessible resource to ensure maximum preparation for rapid response. That’s what they had last year. Disaster reaction and recovery is best achieved when it’s nationally supported, state managed and locally performed.
Abbott also mentioned that two new satellites and modern technology will help decide the path and strength of the storms. State and local governments are also planning routes, shelters, communication lines and supply chains to ensure efficient reaction to the storms. Scientists warn that, as the earth warms, storms are taking more moisture and are able to produce more rainfall. This year storms are also expected to be driven by extremely powerful winds.
Emergency Officials say the nation has to be prepared for ever more active storms in the future. They’ve got to keep building the culture of preparedness in this state and in this nation. Meteorologists(气象学家)predict up to 16 storms this summer including 5 to 9 hurricanes, the most active storms will occur in the approaching Mid-August.

◆ Timing
The absolutely best time in your life to study abroad is when you are in college. If you miss this opportunity, it’s almost impossible for you to do it later in life.
◆ To gain cross-cultural experience
Life overseas makes you see your everyday world in a whole new light. You don’t even realize it, but our culture shapes the way we view the world and affects us every minute of the day. Differences in culture are more than just differences in language, food, clothing and art.
◆ To improve your communication skills and your self-confidence
People who study abroad tend to be willing to take risks, willing to put themselves in unusual situations, and able to solve problems.
◆ To become more fluent in a language or to learn a new language
The world market is becoming smaller, and many companies require a second language. Foreign languages are not only valuable in the job market but also valuable in the real world.
◆ For the adventure
Travel to other cities within your host country and around neighboring countries. As you get to know your new classmates, roommates, and host family, you will gain a unique view on the host culture. Discover the differences and, more importantly, the many similarities between your worlds. The friendships you make will last long after the program.
◆ To learn more about yourself
Find out who you really are. What are your limits? How do you overcome the difficulties you’ve never encountered________before? How independent are you? California is dry. The sunny state is reeling from a four-year drought-a severe and unusual lack of rainfall. The effects of the drought can be seen most clearly in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. Much of the state's water supply comes from the deep snow that falls in these mountains. That snow melts in the spring and fills the state's rivers, lakes, and underground bodies of water. 1.
As a result, experts are now warning that California currently has only a one-year supply of usable water. Today we are standing on dry grass where there should be five feet of snow. 2.
That means people will have to limit their water use at home. They can do this by not watering lawns and reducing water they use for cleaning and cooking. 3.
Places like golf courses and cemeteries currently use a lot of water to keep lawns green. They'll need to find solutions for this problem that require less water.
California's water crisis has been mainly caused by a lack of rain and snowfall over the past few years. 4.Today, California is home to nearly 40 million people. This is double the number who lived there in 1960.
California simply has too many people for its natural resources. 5. Many have moved to the state because of its natural beauty and pleasant weather. And several major businesses are based in California, including Hollywood movie companies such as Warner Bros. and technology giants like Apple.
The drought is not likely to ruin California's businesses, but the state will have to rethink how it grows and does things.
A. But the snow hasn't been falling
B. Nature has prepared so much for people.
C. This serious drought needs immediate action.
D. Mother Nature didn't intend for so many people.
E. But another big problem is its growing population.
F. Some public places will need to make big changes.
G. There are many problems for this terrible drought.
