A high-factor sunscreen(防晒霜) is generally expected to protect the skin from harmful rays, but it isn’t. A new research in this week's Nature shows that while factor 50 reduces the number of melanomas(黑瘤) and delays their occurrence, it can't prevent them. Melanomas are the most aggressive skin cancers. You have a higher risk if you have red or blond hair, fair skin, blue or green eyes, or sunburn easily, or if a close relative has had one. Melanomas are more common if you have periodic intense exposure to the sun. Other skin cancers are increasingly likely with long-term exposure.
There is continuing debate as to how effective sunscreen is in reducing melanomas—the evidence is weaker than it is for preventing other types of skin cancer. A 2011 Australian study of 1,621 people found that people selected to apply sunscreen daily had half the rate of melanomas of people who used cream as needed. A second study, comparing 1,167 people with melanomas to 1,101 who didn't have the cancer, found that using sunscreen routinely, alongside other protection such as hats, long sleeves or staying in the shade, did give some protection. This study said other forms of sun protection—not sunscreen—seemed most beneficial. The study relied on people remembering what they had done over each decade of their lives, so it's not entirely reliable. But it seems reasonable to think sunscreen gives people a false sense of security in the sun.
The good news is that a combination of sunscreen and covering up can reduce melanoma rates. So if there is a heat wave this summer, it would be best for us, too, to pull on a shirt, apply some sunscreen and put on a hat.
1.What is people's common expectation of a high-factor sunscreen?
A. It will delay the occurrence of skin cancer.
B. It will protect them from sunburn.
C. It will keep their skin smooth and fair.
D. It will work for people of any skin color.
2.What do we learn from the 2011 Australian study of 1,621 people?
A. Sunscreen should be applied alongside other protection measures.
B. High-risk people benefit the most from the application of sunscreen.
C. Irregular application of sunscreen does women more harm than good.
D. Daily application of sunscreen helps reduce the incidence of melanomas.
3.What does the author suggest to reduce melanoma rates?
A. Using both covering up and sunscreen.
B. Staying in the shade whenever possible.
C. Using covering up instead of sunscreen.
D. Applying the right amount of sunscreen.

It’s obviously true that not all people like to work, but everyone likes to play. All over the world, men and women, young and old, enjoy recreational activities. So, beyond doubt, entertainment plays an important role in our daily lives. In modern society, there is a broad range of recreational activities—from online computer games to lovely picnics—that meet the needs of different groups of people. Therefore, it won’t be difficult for you to find some recreation to refresh your body and mind.
Recreational activities have a number of benefits, especially in this highly competitive society. They can help us relax, have fun and relieve stress. In fact, I believe there is no better way to get exercise and relieve stress than to take an active part in recreational activities. But can recreational activities do us harm? Of course they can. Let’s take TV as an example. There is no denying that TV offers access to the latest news and to useful knowledge, while providing us with entertainment. However, if we spend too much time watching TV, it will numb our mind and destroy our creativity, which is exactly the opposite of what we really want. What’s more, TV can also show some pornographic programs, which are absolutely unsuitable for us young students. So, just as the old saying goes, every coin has two sides, and watching TV is no exception.
As a student, I think recreational activities are very important for us. But this doesn’t mean we should take up whatever recreational activities are available. Instead, we should strike a balance between work and rest. We should have our own judgment, which means knowing what is good for us and what is not. And we should exercise self-control so as not to become addicted to them. I believe moderate recreational activity will benefit us in many ways and help us live a full, meaningful life.
1.Why does entertainment play an important role in people’s daily lives?
A. Because online computer games are popular with people.
B. Because entertainment can help people have fun instead of relieving stress.
C. Because people of all ages enjoy recreational activities.
D. Because it is easy and convenient to take up any recreational activity.
2.Which of the following statements is not counted as the disadvantage of TV?
A. People are addicted to watching TV.
B. TV provides people with the latest news.
C. Some programs are unsuitable for young students.
D. Spending too much time on it may destroy people’s creativity
3.In the author’s opinion, what is the proper attitude to recreational activities?
A. Spending as much time as we like watching TV.
B. Taking part in any recreational activities available.
C. Learning to control ourselves about entertainment.
D. Benefiting us by taking part in different activities.

The idea of cloning your pet sounds like a laughable waste of money, because it is. But it starts to seem a little less laughable when your own beloved pet starts getting older. If I had had a few hundred thousand dollars to spare, I know I would have half-seriously considered it for my dear little cat, who died last year. One couple that does happen to have a few hundred dollars to spare is Barry Diller and Diane, who have reportedly cloned their beloved Jack Russell Terrier (a kind of dog), Shannon, and now have two identical Jack Russell Terrier named Deena and Evita.
When your pet dies, you just want your pet back, or at least as close a copy as you can get. So it’s really no surprise that of the around 600 dogs cloned by Sooam Biotech Reaserch Foundation most were cloned for sad pet owners. The lab in Seoul, South Korea, is now the only place on the planet in the business of cloning pet dogs for pet owners.
But, in fact, the technology won’t give you your pet back. There don’t yet appear to be any studies on the behaviour of cloned pets, but research on cloned cows and pigs has so far shown marked differences in behaviour and even looks in cloned animals. The DNA is exactly the same, but there are still differences in personality and appearance.
Even if Diller and Von Furstenburg raise their new dogs in the exactly same environment in the exactly same way that they raised Shannon, the new dogs will still behave differently. “The promise of pet cloning is that your cloned pet is going to behave and look like the one you already have --- and that will not be the case,” said Professor Jorge Piedrahita at N.C. State. “We have cloned animals that were raised in the same environment, but they still didn’t act the same.”
1.What can we learn about the lab in Seoul?
A. It was set up by some pet owners. B. It has cloned hundreds of pet dogs.
C. It charges nothing for its services. D. It has cloned a cat for the author.
2.Why does the author mention the studies on cloned cows and pigs?
A. To explain why farm animals are cloned.
B. To discuss why pet cloning is so popular.
C. To show cloned animals are very different from each other.
D. To prove cloning is not a good way to bring pets from the dead.
3.What will the couple be likely to find out about their new dogs?
A. They’ll grow in a very strange way. B. They’ll dislike their new environment.
C. They’ll act differently from Shannon. D. They’ll have the same personality as Shannon.
4.What was Piedrahita’s attitude towards the lab’s promise of pet cloning?
A. He disbelieved it. B. He was worried about it.
C. He was curious about it. D. He showed much interest in it.

It’s time to stop complaining. The economy might be melting down like butter in a hot pot, but for some people — you, maybe? — this could be a very good thing.
Here’s why. At no other time in recent history has it been easier or cheaper to start a new kind of company. Possibly a very profitable company. Let’s call these start-ups LILOs, for “a little in, a lot out;” These are Web-based businesses that cost almost nothing to get off the ground yet can turn into great moneymakers.
How do you get started? All that’s required is a great idea for a product that will fill a need in the 21st century. These days you’d do best if your idea either makes people money or saves them money. And launching now will make your company stronger later — you’ll learn to survive on fumes until the economy improves.
That’s what John Tayman is doing. He’s an author who lives in San Francisco, where I met him; he wrote reviews for a business magazine I edited. Tayman knew little about technology and even less about business. And yet he dreamed of a website that would summarize car reviews from other sources and rank every model of new car. “It’ll be like RottenTomatoes.com meets Kelley Blue Book,” he explained to me during lunch one day last June. Tayman said he intended to build the site on the side while continuing to write for a living. He’d work on his new company only at night and on weekends. Oh, yes, and he had only about $10,000. “Good luck with that!” I thought. Ideas are much easier to produce than they are to put into practice.
Tayman went to work with nothing more than his PowerBook laptop. A very well-organized fellow, he quickly discovered a bunch of free stuff online — instructional manuals and sites that walk you through the process from start to finish. Within months, Tayman had a staff of 20 employees working for him in five different countries. MotorMouths.com went live in January. Tayman figures he has worked about 10 hours a week on it and hasn’t spent a cent on marketing or advertising. Growth is modest but steady: nearly 10,000 people visit each week.
1.What is an advantage of starting a business now?
A. It will guarantee you a big success. B. It can never be more profitable.
C. It costs you much less than ever before. D. It keeps you from useless complaining.
2.What is necessary to start your business according to the passage?
A. Low-cost products used to be trade.
B. Practical products with good quality.
C. Starting the business as early as possible.
D. A good idea helping people make or save money.
3.How did the author feel on hearing of Tayman’s idea?
A. He was sure that it would make profit. B. He had no confidence in Tayman’s success.
C. He didn’t trust his ability. D. He thought Tayman was out of his mind.
4.How is Tayman’s website going now?
A. It has a total of 10,000 visits per week. B. It has made a huge profit since January.
C. It still copies free stuff from the Internet. D. It starts to be used by more people now.

The biggest challenge faced by travelers especially those who like to have a hiking trip is how to ensure a steady supply of clean clothes. Now, thanks to a great invention called Scrubba Wash Pack, that worry may be a thing of the past.
The portable(手提的) washing machine was invented by Ash Newland in 2010, while planning to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Struck by the limited packing space, he got inspiration(灵感) from traditional washboards to create a bag that could be used to clean clothes. Then he gave up his career as a lawyer and focused on perfecting the bag’s design. By 2012, the bag was ready for the public. It weighed only 180 grams and required very little storage space, making it perfect for anyone wishing to travel light.
Not surprisingly, the bag worth 55 dollars was an instant hit with travelers, university students and even passengers. However, Newland was not satisfied. He still saw a flaw(缺点) with his invention – dirty clothes had to be carried around in a separate bag! The recently introduced Scrubba Wash Pack solves that problem.
In order to make the pack active, dirty clothes are placed inside the bag along with two to three liters of water. The bag is then shut tightly to ensure all air is squeezed out(挤出去) and the clothes are massaged for a few minutes. After a quick wash, they are clean and ready to be dried. According to Newland, the pack can clean anything from jeans to smelly socks! What’s even more amazing is that with a capacity to hold 13-liters of water, it can be used to wash more clothes at a time.
The best part is that the 99-dollar pack that will be available for sale later this year, only weighs 300 grams and is completely foldable, making it easy to store when it’s not in use. With the Scrubba Wash Pack, wandering through foreign cities searching for a washing shop, or paying for washing machines may soon be a thing of the past!
1.What led Ash Newland to create the Scrubba Wash Bag?
A. His job requirements. B. His personal experience.
C. His interest in invention. D. A traditional washboard.
2.Why wasn’t Ash Newland satisfied with his former invention?
A. The invention was not so convenient.
B. Clothes couldn’t be washed well.
C. The bag couldn’t contain enough water.
D. The cost of the invention was very high.
3.It can be inferred that the improved Wash Pack ______.
A. turns to be much environmentally friendlier
B. will replace the traditional washing machines
C. can encourage more people to travel a long distance
D. will be widely used by more travelers in the future
4.What is the passage mainly about?
A. Introducing a great new invention.
B. Explaining the development of backpack
C. Listing some common problems for travelers.
D. Comparing two kinds of washing machines.
