For many years, parties have been an important social event. When 25 people or more gather at a certain location in order to have fun and engage in conversation, it can be considered a party. Parties usually have different drinks and food choices, and music is a large part of the event, very often.
Birthday parties are held in honor of an individual who is having a birthday, and presents and gifts are usually brought by attendees(出席者).The song “Happy Birthday to You” is very often sung by partygoers for the person who is having a birthday.
There are different kinds of Birthday parties. Adults may have birthday parties in restaurants or nightclubs, while children usually have parties at home or at funhouses. Sometimes children may have parties at water parks or amusement parks as well.
Birthday parties may also happen in the manner of a surprise party, where the person having a birthday is not told about the birthday preparations. Surprise parties include guests hiding in a location where the party is to take place, then shouting “surprise!” when the guest of honor enters.
Sporting event parties usually take place around a specific sports happening, such as the Super Bowl, the World Cup or the World Series. People gather and eat, drink, and laugh as they talk about the happenings of the games within that sporting event. These types of parties are very lively and usually loud.
Nightly socialization parties include house parties and dance parties. House parties sometimes are held by teenagers and young adults of college age in a set location; private houses are often the location of choice. People who manage the music are hired to provide musical entertainment. Usually alcohol is included, resulting in trouble for the attendants of the party.
Dance parties include energetic music like disco or pop. People gather at these parties to dance, drink, and have a good time. Usually people at these parities will be of younger ages between 18-28.

For years we have been told that encouraging a child’s self-respect is important to his or her success in life. But child experts are now learning that too much praise can lead to the opposite effect, Praise-aholic kids who expect it at every turn may become teens who seek the same kind of approval from their friends when asked if they want to go in the backseat of the car.
The implication (含义) of saying “You are the prettiest girl in class,” or talking about the goals she scored but not her overall( 全面的) efforts, is that you love her only when she looks the best, scores the highest, achieves the most. And this carries over to the classroom.
Social psychologist Carol Dweck, PhD, tested the effects of overpraise on 400 fifth grades while she was at Columbia University. She found that kids praised for “trying hard” did better on the tests and were more likely to take on difficult assignments than those praised for being “smart”.
“ Praising attributes (品质) or abilities makes a false promise that success will come to you because you have that quality, and it devalues efforts, so children are afraid to take on challenges, ” says Dweck, now at Stanford University. “They figure they’d better quit while they’ re ahead.”

Dear Abby,
This is my first letter to you, although I have been reading your column for many years. I need an outside opinion.
I am a grandmother in my 70s and have just returned from visiting my daughter, her husband and their three dearly loved children--all under the age of 5--and I'm upset with some of their parenting ways.
For example: They lock the doors to their children's bedrooms at night because the children might get out of their beds and wander around the house, and we may not hear them."
If one child should get punishment, all three are punished, and if one child says a naughty
word, all three are given hot sauce (辣酱汁) in the mouth. I know these parents love their children very much, but are these ways of disciplining them wise? Please understand, it is not my aim to interfere (干涉).
--- Gram
Dear Gram,
Children's bedroom doors should not be locked. Should a flash fire break out, it would be a nightmare (噩梦).Punishing all the children when only one has earned the punishment is a good way to make them grow up to hate each other. Children who use "naughty" words should not be punished with hot sauce in the mouth-they should be taught the proper and acceptable word to use instead of the "naughty" word.
1.Gram's daughter _____________.
A. is very strict with her children B. does not love her three children
C. always punishes her children at night D. often gives her children hot sauce
2. Gram writes the letter in order to ____________.
A. disclose her daughter's ways as a mother
B. criticize her daughter's ways as a mother
C. express her anger about her daughter s ways as a mom
D. get others' opinion about her daughter's ways as a mom
3. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Gram seems to care for her grand children very much.
B. Gram is against some of her daughter's ways as a mom.
C. Abby is for only one of Gram's daughter's ways as a mom.
D. Abby agrees with Gram about her daughter's ways as a mom.

There’s a reason humans have been building homes from wood for 10,000 years. It’s an excellent building material. But since it’s not transparent (透明的), we’re still in the habit of cutting windows in our houses.
But what if wood could be made transparent?
Researchers in Sweden have been trying to do just that. They’ve created a clear wood material they hope could one day be used for more energy-saving building.
“We chemically made wood transparent”, says Celine Montanari, a researcher at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.
Montanari and her team took wood and removed its lignin(木质素), and filled the resulting micro holes with a special chemical. Then the wood looked rather like the frosted glass of a shower door. They took the material one step further, mixing it with polyethylene glycol, a material that melts at 80 degrees Fahrenheit. When it melts, it absorbs energy and becomes transparent, then releases energy when cooled. In theory, this means the new wood material could be used to make windows that absorb energy during the hot part of the day and release it into the home when it gets cold at night. It makes the new wood an even more eco-friendly material by keeping indoor temperatures constant.
This is not a new technique, says Mark Swihart, a professor at University at Buffalo. Materials that store and release energy are not new either. “The thing that seems to be new is their way of the energy storage.” Swihart says.
Using wood as a base material is attractive because it has strength that’s hard to reproduce in other materials at the same cost, Swihart says. Whether or not the new transparent wood will be successful will depend in large part on how cheaply it can be made, he says. It’s also difficult to get new material widely used by the building industry, as there are existing supply chains for things like glass.
Montanari and her team are currently looking at increasing the heat storage capacity(储热性能) of the transparent wood, for greater energy savings. They’re also studying how to increase production to an industrial scale(规模). They hope to have a product ready for market within five years.
1.What are researchers in Sweden trying to do?
A.Construct all-glass buildings.
B.Develop see-through wood.
C.Create new frosted glass for future buildings.
D.Figure out the reason people use wood for buildings.
2.How is the fifth paragraph developed?
A.By giving example.
B.By analyzing reasons.
C.By describing processes
D.By making comparisons.
3.What does Swihart say about the invention of Montanari and her team?
A.It costs too much
B.It uses a brand-new technique.
C.It will face uncertainty in the market.
D.It will be widely used in the building industry.
4.What are Montanari and her team doing with their new invention now?
A.Making it cheaper.
B.Improving its performance.
C.Putting it into production.
D.Building a supply chain.
