Some people asked me how I could suggest the expenses of billions of dollars for a voyage to Mars, at a time when many children on this Earth are starving to death. I know that they do not expect an answer such as “ Oh, I did not know that there are children dying from hunger, but from now on I will stop any kind of space research until mankind has solved that problem! ”In fact, I have known of this long before.
But I firmly believe that by working for the space program we can make some contributions to the relief and eventual solution of such serious problems as poverty and hunger on the Earth. Two basic factors causing the poverty and hunger problems are the production of food and the distribution (分布) of food. In fact, large areas of land could be used far better if efficient methods of farming, fertilizer use, weather forecasting, field selection, planting, crop surveys, harvest planning and so on were applied. The best tool for the improvement of all these methods undoubtedly, is the artificial Earth satellite. Circling the globe at a high altitude, it can screen wide areas of land within a short time; it can observe and measure a large variety of factors indicating the status and condition of crops, soil, droughts, rainfall, snow cover, etc.
Besides, in the modern society, there is a continuing great need for new basic knowledge in the science if we wish to improve the conditions of human life on the Earth. We need more knowledge in physics and chemistry, in biology and physiology, and particularly in medicine to cope with all these problems which threaten man’s life: hunger, disease, overpopulation, pollution of water and the environment. In a way, the space age not only holds out a mirror in which we can see ourselves, it also provides us with the technologies.
1.The passage is mainly discussing about .
A. whether the children’s dying from hunger is the major problem
B. whether it is worth spending much money on the space research
C. whether the author’s suggestion has been taken into serious consideration
D. whether there is an effective way to avoid the global starvation
2.According to the author, what plays an important part in dealing with poverty and hunger?
A. Government support. B. Methods of farming.
C. Food supply. D. Modern technology.
3.The second paragraph is mainly developed by .
A. making comparison B. giving explanation
C. offering advice D. giving examples
4.From the last paragraph, we can infer that .
A. technologies can help to improve our living quality
B. more basic knowledge is required to be learned
C. we can live a more peaceful and happier life
D. there are different views on the space age

People often ask me for suggestions about how to learn English. As for it, everyone is different. I’ll share some of my experience. I once took a school year English course in Wuhan University, but I mostly learned English on my own.
One thing I can tell you is that, once you start learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see something when you’re riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about “How would I say them in English?” At first, it might be with simple words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I am in America, and for most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It is amazing how much this helps.
For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I did not want to make mistakes. Finally I got it over. And while traveling in America, I’d try to hang out with friends who couldn’t speak Chinese, so that I’d have no choice but to speak English. And I also decided that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so be it. After that, my English started improving much more quickly.
Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you’re writing, and give you some suggestions for improvement.
1.How long did the author learn English in Wuhan University?
A.A week. B.A Month.
C.A term. D.A year.
2.What is the good way to improve your English according to the author?
A.Reading English books. B.Thinking in English.
C.Watching English films. D.Learning English grammar.
3.Where did the author improve his English quickly?
A.In America. B.In China.
C.In the university. D.In the middle school.
4.What is the best title for the text?
A.My University Life B.American English
C.My English Learning Experience D.The Importance of Learning English

People often ask me how I became successful in that six-year period of time while many of the people I knew did not. The answer is simple: The things I found to be easy to do, they found to be easy not to do.
I found it easy to set the goals that could change my life. They found it easy not to. I found it easy to read the books that could affect my thinking. They found that easy not to. I found it easy to attend the classes. They said it probably really wouldn’t matter. Six years later, I’m a millionaire and they are all still blaming the economy, the government and company policies. They neglected(忽视) to do the basic, easy things.
In fact, the primary reason most people are not doing can be summed up in a single word: neglect. It is not the lack of money – banks are full of money. It is not the lack of opportunity – the government continues to offer the most opportunities. It is not the lack of books – libraries are full of books – and they are free! It is not the schools – the classrooms are full of good teachers. We have plenty of good advisors. The major reason that so few take advantage of all that we have is neglect.
Don’t do the things which cause us to feel guilty(感到内疚的) and guilt erodes our self-confidence. As our self-confidence reduces, so does the level of our activity. And as our activity goes down, so do our results. And as our results suffer, our attitude begins to weaken. And as our attitude begins changing from positive to negative, our self-confidence becomes even less … and on and on it goes.
So my suggestion is that when giving choice of “easy to” and “easy not to”, do not neglect to do the simple, basic, “easy” but potentially life-changing activities.
1.Why did the author become a millionaire in six years?
A.He was a very lucky man.
B.He didn’t come across difficulties.
C.He did some basic and easy things.
D.He set himself long-term life goals.
2.The underlined word “erodes” in Paragraph 4 probably means “_____”.
A.changes B. neglects
C.weakens D.exposes
3.What is the main reason that some people fail to succeed?
A.They don’t have good opportunities.
B.They neglect the importance of success.
C.They lack the government’s support.
D. They don’t make use of what they have.
4.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Being self-confident works
B.Nothing can not be neglected
C.Everything is easy to do
D.Success is easy, but so is neglect

Some colors people see late at night could cause signs of clinical(临床的)depression (沮丧). That was the finding of a study that builds on earlier study findings. They show that individuals (个人) who live or work in low levels of light overnight (整夜) can develop clinical depression. Doctors use the word “clinical depression” to describe severe form of depression. Signs may include loss of interest or pleasure in most activities, low energy levels and thoughts of death or suicide.
In the new study, American investigators designed an experiment that exposed hamsters(仓鼠)to different colors. The researchers chose hamsters because they are nocturnal(夜行的), which means they sleep during the day and are active at night.
The animals were separated into four groups. One group of hamsters was kept in the dark during their night-time period. Another group was placed in front of a blue light, a third group slept in front of a white light, while a fourth was put in front of a red light.
After four weeks, the researchers noted how much sugary water the hamsters drank. They found that the most depressed animals drank the least amount of water.
Randy Nelson heads the Department of Neuroscience at Ohio State University. He says animals that slept in blue and white light appeared to be the most depressed. “What we saw is that these animals didn’t show any sleep uneasiness (不安) at all but they did mess up biological clock genes and they did show depressive sign while if they were in the dim(微弱)red light, they did not.”
Randy Nelson notes that photosensitive(感光)cells in the eyes have little to do with eyesight. He says these cells send signals to the area of the brain that controls what has been called the natural sleep-wake cycle.
He says there’s a lot of blue in white light. This explains why the blue light and white light hamsters appear to be more depressed than the hamsters seeing red light or darkness.
1.Researchers use hamsters in the experiment because __________.
A. they are similar to humans in dealing with colors
B. they are easy to observe and study
C. they are sensitive to colors like human beings
D. they are active at night and sleep during the day
2.What sign shows that the hamsters are being depressed?
A. They drink less sugary water. B. They don’t sleep well.
C. Their eyesight becomes worse. D. Their energy level becomes low.
3.What can help people who work late at night to avoid being depressed?
A. Not being exposed to dim red light when using computers.
B. Equipping their computer screens to put it more in the reddish light.
C. Living or working in low levels of light overnight.
D. Going to see doctors of clinical depression regularly for help.

When people aren’t super busy at _______, they are crazy busy exercising, entertaining or parenting. And if there is ever a still moment for thoughts—for example, while waiting _______ at the supermarket or sitting in traffic—out come the mobile phones. So it’s worth noting a study published last month in Science, which shows how _______ people will go to avoid the examination for our thoughts.
“We had noted that we are so dependent on our mobile phones that people seem to find any _______ they can to keep busy,” said Timothy Wilson, a psychology professor at the University of Virginia. In his experiments involving 700 people, the majority found it _______ to be alone with their thoughts for just 6 to 15 minutes.

Allowing and ________ the flow of thoughts is part of the solution itself, such as meditation(冥想).
Negative feelings are sometimes hard, but they are part of everyone’s life, ________ if you are busy. It is those deep and troubling feelings, and how you ________ them, that make you who you are.
