A.Means of ewaste recycling B.How ewaste comes into being C.The benefit of ewaste recycling D.The technologies of ewaste recycling E.The importance of the electronic waste recycle F.Modern technology brings convenience and ewaste |
1.
Modern technology does bring us many conveniences(便利),from WiFi(无线网络)enabled cell phones and ever smaller laptop computers that make entire lives easy to energy efficient washers that use half the power and time to complete their tasks. However, these new toys and equipment finally become electronic waste ( 电子垃圾)(e waste)once they are out of use.
2.
E waste includes everything from empty printer ink containers to broken refrigerators. As people buy new items to replace aging electronics or make upgrades(升级),more electronic waste comes into being. In some cases, such as 2009's switch from analog(模拟)to digital television broadcasting in the United States, changes in technology are so great that old equipment may not even work at all with new systems.
3.
There are many reasons why it is important to recycle electronic waste. Much of the material used to construct electronics, including metal and plastic parts, can be recycled into new items at a discount of the cost and energy use needed to create things from new raw materials(原材料). Additionally, many electronics contain poisonous substances (有毒物质)that are harmful to the environment and could be deadly if they go into an area's groundwater. When properly recycled, they can be reused and will not do harm to the environment. Because of these environmental concerns, many areas require by law that electronic waste be properly recycled.
4.
The availability(可用性)of ewaste recycling programs varies from place to place. In some areas, annual collections are held once or twice a year as a means of dealing with ewaste as well as used engine oil or other waste that is harmful to the environment. There are also some good alternatives (替代品) to recycling your ewaste. Any items that are in working condition can be given to friends or donated to charities(慈善机构)like Goodwill or the Salvation Army, who rely heavily on donations ( 捐赠) . Freecycling ,or passing on your unwanted items to those in need of them,is also a means of finding new homes for used items.
5.
Ewaste recycling helps protect the environment by reducing the amount of poisonous materials placed in landfills(垃圾场)and saving recyclable parts to save energy and other resources. Recycling is a way of life. Stick to that choice every single day and recycling will become second nature to us.

The idea of turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing is not new. During the last five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into fabric to deal with plastic pollution. But there’s a problem with this method. Research now shows that microfibers could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea.
Dr. Mark Browne in Santa Barbara, California, has been studying plastic pollution and microfibers for 10 years now. He explains that every time synthetic (合成的)clothes go into a washing machine, a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most washing machines can’t collect these microfibers. So every time the water gets out of a washing machine, microfibers are entering the sewers and finally end up in the sea.
In 2011, Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic clothing can produce more than 1, 900 fibers per wash. Browne collected samples from seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used a special way to examine each sample. He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers.
This is bad news for a number of reasons. Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten. Studies have also shown that plastic can absorb other pollutants.
Based on this evidence, it may seem surprising that companies and organizations have chosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as an environmental“solution.”Even though the science has been around for a while, Browne explains that he's had a difficult time getting companies to listen. When he asked well-known clothing companies to support Benign by Design—his research project that seeks to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market, Browne didn’t get a satisfying answer. Only one women’s clothing company, Eileen Fisher, offered Browne funding.

San Francisco, a leader in urban recycling, is preparing to turn dog waste into energy.
Norcal Waste System Inc., the city’s largest garbage company, plans to test collection carts(回收车)and collection bags in a city-center park which is popular with dog walkers.
A city study found that almost 4 percent of all the garbage picked up at San Francisco homes was from animal waste, Norcal Waste spokesman Robert Reid said. San Francisco has about 120,000 dogs.
“The city asked us to start a program to recycle dog waste in order to cut back adding more waste in landfills(废渣埋填池) “,Reid said.
Dog waste will be poured into a methane digester(沼气池),and the methane it gives off will be collected and burned to make electricity or to heat homes.
“Dogs and cats in the United States produce about 10 million tons of waste a year,” Will Brinton, an environmental scientist said.
“As much as we love them, our pets leave a lot of fertilizer behind them in yards and on the street but that can be a major source of contamination of groundwater,” Brinton said.
European cities such as Zurich, Frankfurt, Munich and Vienna are starting biology programs to turn waste into gas ,he said.
San Francisco runs a great program to recycle bottles, cars, paper and other rubbish and now two-thirds of its garbage needn’t be carried to landfills .The city’s goal is a 75 percent drop by 2010 and zero new waste in landfills by 2020.

Have you ever heard of e-waste(electric waste,电子垃圾), which can be produced every day? How do you deal with your computers, MP4 players and mobile phones when they’re broken or you want a new one?
Most people just throw them away. With the development of electric industry, e-waste pollution has become a serious problem. According to the United Nations, in 2014, people around the world produced 41.8 million tons of e-waste and only recycled 6.5 million tons. The US was the biggest waster, producing 7.1 million tons. China came second, with 6 million tons.
It’s important to pay attention to e-waste. It can either be valuable or harmful, depending on how we deal with it. E-waste is a valuable urban mine(城市矿藏). The value of the metals, like gold and silver in the waste around the world, is amazing. And the metals can be reused. But if people throw them away, the toxic chemicals can get into the earth or air, affecting the environment and people’s health.
Apple, for example, now recycle people’s used products in China when they are buying new ones. The company will test and repair the used ones and sell them at lower prices. To help reduce e-waste, we can also take computers and phones to see if companies offer recycling programs.
1.Which country produced most e-waste according to the United Nations?
A. America. B. China.
C. Japan. D. Australia
2.What does the underline word “affecting” mean in this passage?
A. protect B. influence
C. improve D. pollute
3.The main purpose of this passage is to_____.
A. prove that e-waste is useless.
B. encourage people to buy more electronic products.
C. advise people to deal with e-waste properly to reduce pollution.
D. Tell us science and technology is developing rapidly.
