Chinese primary and middle school pupils spend longer at school and take more after-school classes compared with students in other countries, according to a report.
In 2015,the average (平均的) school time for primary school students increased to 8.1 hours a day, from 6.7 hours in 2010. This report was from an important education organization in China.
The report said that middle school students spent 11 hours a day at school in 2015,3.3 hours longer than five years ago. Besides, Chinese students had too much home-work to do, which also put pressure on their parents. About 80% of parents said they had to supervise (监督)their children while they were doing their homework.
Chinese students also spent more time on learning outside the classroom. By the end of 2016, about 137 million students had taken part in after-school classes, the report said. Chinese students spent 17 hours a week on learning after classes finished, much longer than the average 一7. 8 hours around the world.
Luckily, these days the Ministry of Education has realized these problems and is now trying to make some rules to solve the problems. I hope Chinese students can study easily and happily in the future.

February 17th should have been the start of the new term for many middle and primary schools in China. However, because of the new coronavirus outbreak, many schools put off the start of the term. But students in China didn’t stop studying.
Instead of having class at school, many students in Beijing and Guangzhou began their first day of online classes on February 17th. Students in Shanghai started online classes on March 2nd. Students mainly took classes to review previous knowledge rather than taking new classes during the online study period. Online courses were required to include content about epidemic prevention (流行病防疫) , psychological health (心理健康) and educational activities.
“Online courses are only temporary measures (暂时的措施) taken during the epidemic, so when the new term begins, schools should not replace classroom teaching with online classes,” Lu Yugang from the ministry told China Daily.
The ministry also listed out some points to guide schools:
※ Don’t increase students’ schoolwork burden (负担).
※ Don’t ask students to study online for long periods of time or study things beyond their courses.

A primary school in Wuhan has used new desks and chairs to prevent students from getting short sight. The desks and chairs make students have the correct posture(座姿), especially when reading and writing. Each desk has an adjustable(可调节的)steel bar(铁架). The bar can help students keep their eyes at least 30cm from books.
Zhang Jianming is headmaster of the primary school. She said the new desks and chairs were provided by an eye care centre in the city. The school carried out a survey last September. It showed that about 7 per cent of its 1,093 students said they suffered from short sight.
