I graduated in 2004 and moved to Israel, making a career as an English teacher. I am always looking for interesting projects to get my students more inspired to learn the language. Through Facebook, I saw that Kirstin, a friend of mine, was teaching at a school in an East African country. I contacted Kirstin and asked her if she would like to do a letter exchange between my students in Jerusalem and her students in Tanzania.
It took a while to wait for Kirstin’s answer because Internet access is not easy to come in the countryside of Tanzania, but when she finally was able to connect, she responded with a huge yes.
Two months later, a package arrived. The students gathered around my table in class, and we went over the letters together. “My name is Nelson,” one letter read. “I am 13 years old. I live in Njombe, Tanzania. I like to play ball, to ride a bike, and to read books.” Below the handwritten letter was a colorful drawing of a boy wearing traditional Tanzanian clothing.
My students were excited. “This is so cool! What a great project,” shouted one of my students, Hadas. This was followed by a group of students asking if we could travel to Tanzania to meet their new friends. One student, Nir, suggested maybe they could simply become friends on Facebook instead. “The kids don’t have Facebook accounts. And there’s very limited Internet access in their area of Tanzania, I explained to them.
It was hard for my students to imagine that there were places in the world where teens did not have online social networking systems.
The pen pal project gave my students the chance to not only practice their English, but to also learn about other areas in our world.

What were you like as a teenager? I was a nightmare. I was rude to my parents, always stayed out late, never did my homework, hung out with the wrong people and made lots of bad decisions. Obviously, this is the age when teenagers are out of control and behave badly. Maybe, if you’re a teenager now, you think this is unfair judgment or it’s not your fault. Well, you might be right!
Experts have found that it’s a teenager’s brain that is to blame. Between the ages of about 13 to 19 — a period known as adolescence, the brain is still developing in areas that control behavior. This has an influence on learning and multitasking, stress and memory, sleep, and decision-making. For parents, these results often make them notice lots of behaviors that they may have earlier blamed on hormones (荷尔蒙) or just moodiness.
So our brains are still developing much later than it was thought before. Is this the perfect excuse for teenagers to walk around aimlessly and not get their homework done on time? Of course not! According to Professor Sarah-Jayne Blakemore, who made the new discovery, it’s to do with our prefrontal cortex that’s the part of our brain right at the front, just behind the forehead. She says “It takes part in a whole area of very high-level cognitive (认知的) tasks such as decision making and planning — we know that this area is going through very large amounts of development during the adolescent years”. This is the part of the brain which plays an important role in planning, and, for a teenager, this hasn’t developed yet. So getting organised to do their homework, for example, can come as a bit of challenge.
I wish I’d known about this because instead of telling my teacher I’d left my homework on the bus or that the dog had eaten it. Now I could say, “Sorry sir, my brain isn’t developed enough for the cognitive task of planning my homework.”
1.Which of the following is common in teenagers?
A.Doing some bad deeds.
B.Being blamed for their age.
C.Stopping their brain development.
D.Making excuses for their bad behaviors.
2.What do we know about the new discovery?
A.The brain develops in the first few years of life.
B.The forehead stops developing during adolescence.
C.Hormones take responsibility for teenagers’ behaviors.
D.The prefrontal cortex affects us performing cognitive tasks.
3.What is the best title for the text?
A.Behind the adolescence
B.Inside a Teenager’s Brain

My writing career began ten years ago with my articles published locally and nationally. As a beginning writer, I was happy to be on my way, writing and learning as much as I could . With two little kids underfoot, as well as working full-time, it was really difficult to make time for writing, but I managed.
Readers told me they laughed, cried or were inspired by my articles. But they didn't know what was really going on behind the typewriter. I was not a happy mommy, and found it difficult to enjoy the everyday little things in life. In short, I was not a happy person.
I realized I had to make some changes. I started walking every morning. It cleared my head, allowed me time to think, gave me fresh air, and made me feel invigorated (精神焕发) and healthy. I was eating wisely, and the weight started to go. I started a new job, joined a monthly writing chapter, and was determined to keep up my walking. Finding the balance was sometimes difficult. But I was determined to fit in writing time because it made me happy. Sure I loved to watch the news and have my tea, but that wasn't what made me truly happy.
My own happiness has shown through my family, my job performance and my attitude towards challenging situations. I again have readers telling me the effect my writing has had on them, with some able to get on with their own writing because of my articles.
It was up to me to make it happen—my own happiness. One step at a time-one word at a time. And I did it.

4.What do you think is the main idea of the story?

I grew depressed (沮丧的), even as my husband Charlie’s career skyrocketed. He was a NASA astronaut. I was excited for him when he began training to go to the moon, and I involved (潜心于) myself with the flight as much as possible, but I was really looking forward to it being over. Inside I was hoping that once he got this goal behind him, he would put me first.
But he didn’t. He still had that workaholic(工作狂) drive. He was still following a list of goals which I was still down near the bottom of. I considered breaking up but I wondered if any man could love me the way I wanted to be loved. Was there even such a thing as the perfect marriage? I didn’t wish it anymore. However, in his eyes, our marriage certainly hadn’t delivered any satisfaction, so within several years we were heading full-speed toward breaking up.
I began to look for other things to satisfy me. I tried a career. I tried church work. I helped the needy. Nothing worked. I even tried drugs, but they didn’t work either. I thought, maybe there was no purpose in life. Didn’t that seem strange? I was married to a famous man, had a nice home and healthy children, plenty of money, yet I had no hope.
I also discovered God, and I believed He wanted to change me. I found He wanted me to forgive Charlie, so I tried that, although I felt it was impossible. But over a two-month period, God freed me of my anger and helped me love Charlie unconditionally.

Children start out as natural scientists, eager to look into the world around them. Helping them enjoy science can be easy; there’s no need for a lot of scientific terms or expensive lab equipment. You only have to share your children’s curiosity(好奇). Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of seven-year-olds to talk about science as a job. The children asked me “textbook questions” about schooling, salary(薪水) and whether I liked my job. When I finished answering, we sat facing one another in silence. Finally I said, “Now that we’re finished with your lists, do you have questions of your own about science?”
After a long pause, a boy raised his hand, “Have you ever seen a grasshopper(蚱蜢) eat? When I try eating leaves like that, I get a stomachache. Why?”
This began a set of questions that lasted nearly two hours.
Secondly, give them time to think. Studies over the past 30 years have shown that, after asking a question, adults typically wait only one second or less for an answer, no time for a child to think. When adults increase their “wait time” to three seconds or more, children give more logical(符合逻辑的), complete and creative answers.
Thirdly, watch your language. Once you have a child involved in a science discussion, don’t jump in with “That’s right” or “Very good”. These words work well when it comes to encouraging good behavior(行为). But in talking about science, quick praise can signal that discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying “That’s interesting” or “I’d never thought of it that way before”, or coming up with more questions or ideas.
Never push a child to “Think”. It doesn’t make sense, children are always thinking, without your telling them to. What’s more, this can turn a conversation into a performance. The child will try to find the answer you want, in as few words as possible, so that he will be a smaller target(目标) for your disagreement.
Lastly, show; don’t tell. Real-life impressions of nature are far more impressive than any lesson children can learn from a book or a television program. Let children look at their fingertips through a magnifying glass(放大镜), and they’ll understand why you want them to wash before dinner. Rather than saying that water vaporates(蒸发), set a pot of water to boil and let them watch the water level drop.
1.According to the passage, children are natural scientists, and to raise their interest, the most important thing for adults to do is _______.
A. let them see the world around
B. share the children’s curiosity
C. explain difficult phrases about science
D. supply the children with lab equipment?
2.In the last sentence of the first paragraph, the word “lists” could best be replaced by ______.
A. any questions
B. any problems

A. ask them to answer quickly
B. wait for one or two seconds after a question
C. tell them to answer the next day
D. wait at least for three seconds after a question
4.In which of the following paragraph(s) does the author tell us what to say to encourage children in a science discussion?
A. The second and third.
B. The fourth and fifth.

B. offer their children chances to see things for themselves
C. be patient enough when their children answer questions
