Dear Editor,
I have just returned home after studying for a year in Germany. But it seems that my parents don’t understand me now. They expect me to be the same person I was before I went abroad, but I’m not! Why can’t they let me be myself?
Jimmy
Hi, Jimmy,
As far as I know, people who have lived abroad often find that the adjustment (调整) to returning home is more difficult than their adjustment to living in a foreign culture. Why? We expect to have some problems when we go to a new place, speak a different language and learn the rules of a different culture ... But home? ... we know that place!
Your parents expect that the same person who boarded the airplane one year ago will be returning. Especially if they have never been abroad themselves, your parents probably won’t understand the changes that living abroad can cause in a person. On the other hand, you may have maintained (保持) an ideal mental image of your loved ones while abroad, an image that is broken into pieces when you return.
Remember you have been living a different lifestyle in your host country, and you have probably become very independent while staying there alone. Now that you’re home, you will be expected to conform (顺应) again to the lifestyle of your family. As a result, you may be upset about your parents’ involvement in your life.
Communication is the key to overcoming this problem. Tell your parents how you are feeling. Share with them information about cultural re-entry(重归), and ask them to be patient. This does not mean that you have to forget your experience and give up everything you’ve learned! Learn to find a balance between the old and new, just as you did when first adjusting to your host country’s culture.
1.What is Jimmy’s main purpose in writing the letter?
A.To criticize his parents.
B.To ask for advice about his studies.
C.To complain about his parents.
D.To ask for help.
2.What does the editor think of Jimmy’s problem?
A.It’s unusual. B.It’s normal. C.It’s serious. D.It’s interesting.
3.The editor thinks that both Jimmy and his parents ______.
A.have changed in the past year
B.have unrealistic expectations of each other
C.need to behave like they did before
D.need to find a balance between the good and bad
4.The author suggests that ______ would help solve Jimmy’s problem.
A.patience and trust
B.patience and politeness
C.better communication between family members
D.a deeper understanding of the host country’s culture

I’m a Senior I study in a middle school. This term, my favorite teacher, Miss Mao, no longer teaches us. I want to see her, but I’m afraid that she no longer likes me and I don’t want to trouble her. I really miss her. What should I do?
Tian Yan
Dear Tian Yan,
It’s bad luck that you have lost your favorite teacher, But if she is still in your school , nothing can stop you going to see her. When she isn’t busy, ask her if she minds having a quick chat. You can then tell her she was your favorite teacher------ everyone is happy to know that they are liked!
If she has left the school, it will be more difficult to meet her. It will be hard, but remember people always come and go in their lives. We can’t rely on them to be with us all the time.
You may be sad to say goodbye to her, but we can remember and learn from her. Think of her best qualities.
You could also try looking for similar qualities in your other teachers. Study hard and give your new teacher a chance. In time, you might start to see that he or she has different qualities to learn from.
Finally, you can not completely rely on other people to get you through your studies , or even your life.

You’ve just come home, after living abroad for a few years. Since you’ve been away, has this country changed for the better-or for the worse?
If you’ve just arrived back in the UK after a month’s holiday, small changes have probably surprised you-anything from a local greengrocer suddenly being replaced by a mobile-phone shop to someone in your street moving house.
So how have things changed to people coming back to Britain after seven, ten or even 15 years living abroad? What changes in society can they see that the rest of us have hardly noticed-or now take for granted? To find out, we asked some people who recently returned.
Debi: When we left, Cheltenham, my home town, was a town of white, middle-class families-all very conservative (保守的). The town is now home to many eastern Europeans and lots of Australians, who come here mainly to work in hotels and tourism. There are even several shops only for foreigners
Having been an immigrant (移民) myself, I admire people who go overseas to find a job. I believe foreign settlers have improved this country because they’re more open-minded and often work harder than local people.
Christine: To see policemen with guns in the airport for the first time was frightening-in Cyprus, they’re very relaxed-and I got pulled over by customs officers just for taking a woolen sweater with some metal-made buttons out of my case in the arrivals hall. Everyone seemed to be on guard. Even the airport car-hire firm wanted a credit card rather than cash because they said their vehicles had been used by bank robbers.
But anyway, this is still a green, beautiful country. I just wish more people would appreciate what they’ve got.
1.After a short overseas holiday, people tend to _______.
A.notice small changes B.expect small changes
C.welcome small changes D.dislike small changes
2.What’s Debi’s attitude to the foreign settlers?
A.Disappointed. B.Negative.
C.Doubtful. D.Supportive.
3.When arriving at the airport in Britain, Christine was shocked by _______.
A.the relaxed policemen B.the dirty arrivals hall
C.the strict safety check D.the bank robbers
4.Which might be the best title for the passage?
A.Life in Britain. B.Back in Britain.
C.Britain in Future . D.Britain in Memory.

Dear Editor;
Why do newspapers carry so many advertisements for electronic equipment? Last Sunday I counted ads for seven kinds of televisions and thirteen kinds of radios in the Atlanta Journal. Besides that, there were pages and pages of ads for Citizens’ Band radios and tape recorders.
Don’t you realize what electronic equipment is doing to our daily life? Everywhere you go you may hear loud musician advertisements over radios; this continual noise is ruining our ears. Husbands don’t talk to wives any more; they are always watching the news or a ball game. Children ruin their eyes (not to mention their minds) with endless hours of watching not only the programs for children but those for grown-ups as well. And worse, hidden microphones find out about our private lives, and computers keep records of personal information about us. Enough is enough! I think you should limit the amount of advertising of electronic equipment in the Atlanta journal. Otherwise it will make life unbearable for us all.
1.Atlanta Journal is the name of_________.
A.a department store
B.a shop that sells electronic equipment
C.a local newspaper
D.a hotel where the writer stayed
2.What problem does Jason Collins think radio causes?
A.It has too many programs for advertising.
B.It makes husbands talk little to wives.
C.It gives too much loud music.
D.Its noise does harm to our ears..
3.Electronic equipment causes all the following problems except that______.
A.personal information is given to strangers.
B.Children ruin their eyes.
C.News of the world is given to all citizens
D.Family members don’t talk to each other

Dear Editor,
I’m now busy in preparing for the Postgraduate (研究生) Entrance Exam. A few days ago, I happened to see some new guidebooks for those who want to take next year’s exam. With too many hopes and without taking it into too much consideration, I bought several that were written by some known for helping candidates (应试者) for master’s degrees.
What made me really angry was the starting discovery that the contents of those books were almost exactly the same as some I had bought before. There were only superficial (外表的) changes in their covers, with more attractive new titles and better designs. The contents were the same.
People say that the publishing industry is in a state of chaos (混乱) these days but I used to be doubtful abut that. I was of the opinion that only people of noble character, prestige (威望), and exceptional talent would produce books for higher education. But these editors are caring little about their readers.
I hope that authors and publishing houses will be more responsible for their readers. Don’t destroy the image that you have with your readers.

A.there were a lot of printing mistakes in the books that he had bought |

D.the books had the same contents as what he had bought before |
3. In the writer’s opinion, publishers should be _____________________________.
