Malnutrition (营养不良) remains a serious problem for Indians. But a new study shows that Indians’ leading causes of death now also include obesity-related (和肥胖有关的) diseases such as heart disease and more than 20% of Indians living in cities are overweight. A professor says, “Eating is the most important thing in any Indian family and how you show your love and thanks for a person is through the kind of food you serve him. Researchers say Indians store more body fat per kilogram than Europeans.

Doctor Misra is a director of diabetes. He said obesity and diabetes were limited to India’s rich people. But now the poorest are also getting heavier. “Many people used to be thin. The other side of the picture was many people were fat and some of these belonged to the poorest section in India.” He says. Doctor Misra hopes the spread of obesity can slow down. And he says it must start from the schools by giving all Indian children the same instructions on physical activity and diet.

The government doesn’t have enough money to care for the elderly, particularly when it is busy trying to care for the young.

One further solution is that the government or social organizations set up some working places especially for the elderly where they are independent.

In short, all these measures have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, we are expecting to combine(结合) these measures so that we can provide the care we hope to give to our elderly generations.
