Arthur Miller (1915—2005) is universally recognized as one of the greatest dramatists of the 20th century. Miller's father had moved to the USA from Austria-Hungary, drawn like so many others by the “Great American Dream”. However, he experienced severe financial hardship when his family business was ruined in the Great Depression of the early 1930s.
Miller's most famous play, Death of a Salesman, is a powerful attack on the American system, with its aggressive way of doing business and its insistence on money and social status as indicators of worth. In Willy Loman, the hero of the play, we see a man who has got into trouble with this system. Willy is “burnt out” and in the cruel world of business there is no room for sentiment: if he can't do the work, then he is no good to his employer, the Wagner Company, and he must go. Willy is painfully aware of this, and at a loss as to what to do with his lack of success. He refuses to face the fact that he has failed and kills himself in the end.
When it was first staged in 1949, the play was greeted with enthusiastic reviews, and it won the Tony Award for Best Play, the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was the first play to win all three of these major awards.
Miller died of heart failure at his home in Roxbury, Connecticut, on the evening of February 10, 2005, the 56th anniversary of the first performance of Death of a Salesman on Broadway.

Spanish artist Pablo Picasso (1881—1973) is one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. It is said that everything his brush touched turned to gold. But in truth, the value of his work could be worth more than any precious metal. Picasso created more than 20,000 works in his life, including two of the world’s 10 most expensive paintings.
Between 1907 and 1913, Picasso and his colleague(同事) Georges Braque started a revolution(革命) in painting. Before that, paintings were like windows — they were painted to look as if they had depth. You could tell which objects were “close” to you and which objects were “far away”. But Picasso and Braque didn’t want to paint like that any more. To them, a painting wasn’t a window to the world; it was marks and lines on a flat surface. Why, they thought, should an object like a guitar be shown only from one angle (角度)? A guitar can look very different depending on which angle one looks at it from. Their answer was to show all the angles. They broke the guitar up into pieces. Their style of painting is called cubism.
But why did they feel such a need to change things? Well, the world around them was changing, too. Science was turning people’s ideas upside down. Albert Einstein’s theory was proving that what we knew about time and space was wrong. And new political movements like socialism were on the rise. The world was becoming different; artists needed to start seeing and painting it differently.
The famous and terrifying painting Guernica (1937) shows the horror of the bombing(轰炸) of the town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. In the painting, you can actually see the sky falling. Picasso couldn’t have painted it without the skills he learned during his cubist period. Breaking a guitar into pieces was his preparation for showing the world being blown to pieces.
1.What is the article mainly about?
A. The high price of Picasso’s paintings. B. Picasso’s difficulties in career.
C. The popularity of Picasso’s paintings. D. Picasso’s achievements in art.
2.In what way did Picasso and Braque paint?
A. They painted objects with different depths.
B. They made their paintings look like windows.
C. They painted an object from different angles.
D. They broke objects into pieces and painted them.
3.What caused Picasso and Braque to start cubism?
A. Einstein’s theory. B. The changing world.
C. The rising socialism. D. New political movements.
4.The painting Guernica is mentioned to show _______.
A. the themes of Picasso’s paintings B. the anger of Picasso at the war
C. the preparations Picasso made before D. the artistic effect of cubism

Roman Pantheon (万神殿) is one of the greatest achievements of the ancient Romans. The ancient Romans were good architects and they built many wonderful buildings. Another good example of a Roman architectural style is the Roman Coliseum, which is a large building used for public sports events or entertainment. The Roman architectural style has been borrowed by many of the western countries.
The architecture of Pantheon is unique to Rome. In Latin and Greek, pantheon means "Temple of all the Gods". Marcus Agrippa built the original Pantheon in 27 BC. But the Pantheon built by Agrippa was completely destroyed in 80 AD when a fire broke out. The Roman Pantheon that is visited by many tourists today was rebuilt in 125 AD by the Roman emperor Hadrian. Hadrian's architects followed the exact design of Marcus Agrippa. Historians believe that the Pantheon was a place of worship(崇拜) because it housed all the gods and goddesses of the ancient Romans.
The Pantheon of Rome is an amazing example of ancient Roman architecture. This building has been in use for over 2000 years. The Roman Pantheon is famous for its design, size. Phocas, the Byzantine Emperor presented the Roman Pantheon to Pope Boniface IV to save it from the destruction. In 609 AD, it was turned into a church. During Papal rule, it was used as a burial ground (坟场) for kings and other famous people. There are tombs of Raphael (a painter), King Victor Emmanuel II, King Umberto I and many more in the Pantheon.

There’s no doubt that one of the greatest human achievements is the exploration of the space. Ever since astronaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person to be sent into the orbit around the moon in 1961, scientists have been pushing the boundaries further and further. But until now the exploration into the unknown has been dominated (主导) by men.
Of course, in the past, women were also included in the space projects and played an active role on the ground and behind the scenes. For example, they worked as seamstresses (女裁缝师), sewing vital spaceflight components. In fact, many of NASA’s key works would never have been possible without them. Recently Hollywood produced a movie called Hidden Figures to focus on a group of American female mathematicians, especially the black women, who helped NASA send the first American into space. But this was not women’s only contribution. Back in 1963, Soviet astronaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to be sent into space. However, after that, space flight programs were slow to employ women. In the USA. NASA didn’t accept applications from women to become astronauts until 1978.
But attitudes have changed and leading officials at NASA say that the first person to set foot on Mars should be a woman. The space agency aims to have a sex-balanced workforce but can only achieve that if equal numbers of men and women are trained for science and technology jobs. As Allison McIntryre told the BBC, “My director is a woman. We have female astronauts. We haven’t put a woman on the moon yet. And I think that perhaps the first person to step on Mars should be a woman.”
1.What did Yuri Gagarin do in 1961?
A.He landed on the moon in success.
B.He discovered many new boundaries.
C.He led scientists to explore the moon.
D.He made the first journey into the space.
2.Why does the author mention the film Hidden Figures?
A.To show women are the true heroes of NASA’s first launch.
B.To stress that black people have won equal rights in NASA.
C.To prove women can do as well as men in NASA’ projects.
D.To present women’s contributions to NASA’s space programs.
3.What is Allison McIntryre’s attitude toward women astronauts?
A.Uncaring. B.Disapproving.
C.Supportive. D.Disappointed.
4.What is the best title for the text?
A.Will the First Person to Step on Mars Be a Woman?
B.Great Achievements Have Been Made in Space Exploration?
C.Why Men Played an Important Role in Exploring the Unknown?
D.Men and Women Have Made Equal Contributions to NASA’s Projects?
