It was another day to jump rope in gym class. Lynn and Mike turned the long rope in big, slow circles. The whole class hurried to get in line to wait for their turn to jump. Millie stood at the back of the line and frowned.
Nick went first. He watched the rope and ran in at just the right time. Everyone counted. He made it all the way to 30 jumps. One after another, the kids watched the rope, ran in and jumped. Then it was Millie’s turn. She watched the rope go around and around, but she didn’t move. She felt like everyone was looking at her.
Millie’s friends cheered: “Go, Millie, go!”
Millie’s face turned red. At last, she gave it a try, but she failed.
The truth was that Millie had been jumping rope at home every day. With a short rope, she could jump 100 times without missing. She just didn’t know how to run in and start jumping with a long rope. Since she was the only kid on her street, there was no one to help turn the long rope.
Just then, Ms. Miles, the gym teacher, brought out a bunch of short jump ropes.
“Let’s see how long each one of you can jump without missing.” she said as she gave each student a short rope. “Ready, set. Go!”
Millie smiled for the first time ever in gym class. As she jumped, she sang rhymes quickly to herself.
After a while, Millie realized that everyone was cheering. “Go. Millie, go!”
She was the only one still jumping rope! The surprise almost made her miss a step, but she kept going. When at last she was too tired to go on, she stopped. The whole class cheered. Everyone was looking at her and smiling. Millie smiled back!

It was Saturday morning and I asked seven-year-old Kelley to let her daddy take her to gym class. But she didn’t agree. I explained that some friends would visit our house that day and I had to clean the house. But the truth was, I had spent 20 years watching Kelley’s five elder brothers and sisters take lessons and I just wanted to get out of it. However, seeing Kelley was going to cry, I decided to do this once more.
Looking through the door, I watched as the teacher led the students to a rope (绳索) hanging in the corner of the gym. One after another, each child in line climbed up the thick rope while the teacher held it at the bottom. Then it was Kelley’s turn — the youngest in the class. With a big smile, she climbed higher and higher. Then it happened. About halfway up, the teacher loudly warned, “Don’t go up any farther than you’re able to come down.”
Kelley halted... Then slowly moved down all the way to the floor. I knew she was heading to the top of that rope and was perfectly capable (能胜任的) of reaching it. Why did she stop? I questioned her on the way home.
“Kelley, could you have climbed all the way to the top?”
“Yes,” she quietly replied.
“Then why didn’t you keep going?”
Silence.
“Was it because of what the teacher said?” I asked.
She nodded.
I knew it was time to teach.
“Kelley, don’t let anybody make you doubt yourself. Don’t ever let anyone keep you from knowing what you can do... Even though they seem bigger, or smarter or older. Will you remember that?” I said.
“Yes!” She answered quickly.
I was glad I chose to take Kelley to the class and got the chance to teach her an important lesson.

While I was jumping rope, my phone fell to the floor which created several cracks(裂痕) on my screen. However, the music kept playing, so all was well--or so I thought.
Thirty minutes later, I could see only one-tenth of my screen while the rest was black. The next morning, I decided not to go to the phone store until 24 hours later. I felt a sense of calm that day, which led to my not going for one week. One week ended up becoming 60 days without my smartphone. Here are three advantages I noticed.
1.
While in line at a Starbucks, I noticed how every person had their head down, eyes locked on their smartphone. With nothing else to do during the waiting period, I became bored, and my mind wandered through all kinds of topics.
Boredom is typically something we avoid at all costs. However, new ideas are often hidden in boredom. When you enter a state of boredom, you allow your mind to relax and get away from the realities of today to the possibilities of tomorrow. Then boredom ends up being a perfect way for new ideas to pop out.
2. You’ll be able to dramatically reduce(减少) your work hours
A study found that people aged 18 to 33 checked their smartphones 85 times a day, or once every 10 minutes.
By not having my smartphone, my distraction(使人分心的事) time went down, which helped me fall into deep work more easily. There were many times when I found myself wondering what to do with the afternoon since I had already completed my stressful tasks for the day.
3.Your mental health will improve a lot
Focusing on smart phones for too long can lead to health problems, back and neck pain, bad memory and poor eyesight, to name a few. It’s also important to remember that online connections cannot take the place of real-life interactions. Without my smart phone for 60 days, I went to more dinners with friends and asked more questions to strangers out of curiosity. I realized that spending time with friends in person and building networks off-line can be protective for your mental health.
1.The writer has been without his/her smart phone for________.
A.thirty minutes B.24 hours C.a week D.two months
2.Which of the following can be put in ▲ ?
A.You’ll learn to relax. B.You’ll have a better idea.
C.You’ll become bored. D.You’ll get away from the realities.
3.Which of the following statement is the writer’s OPINION about smartphones?
A.While waiting in line, most people play their smart phones to kill time.
B.Adults aged 18 to 33 check their smartphones once every ten minutes.
C.Focusing too much on smart phones causes problems to physical health.
D.Spending time with friends in real life does good to our mental health.
4.The writer shows the problems of smart phones by________.
A.sharing experiences. B.asking questions.
C.telling stories. D.giving examples
