The concept of homeschooling is not a new one. Homeschooling means educating children at home instead of sending them to public or private schools. Nowadays, homeschooling has become popular in many countries for a variety of reasons. One of them is poor quality of education in public schools and it’s also because private schools are quite expensive. Some parents believe that because they know their child’s strengths and weaknesses, they can teach him or her better. Some parents prefer homeschooling so as to prevent their children from getting into bad company. There is another group of people who choose to educate their children at home because they want them to learn spirit and values of the family and also their religious beliefs. They also think that homeschooling would help in development of strong family bonds(家庭纽带).
However, there are some negative effects of homeschooling on students as well as parents.
Homeschooling is a full-time job and not fit for parents who have their own careers. It takes a lot of time for parents’ side to make homeschooling a success. Other family members’ responsibilities may also be affected. They may give their full attention to the needs of their children. Besides, a parent may have high educational qualifications, but that does not make him or her a good teacher. Teaching is an art, which requires the ability to understand the needs of the children. It is likely that the parent might have forgotten what he or she has learned, and the curriculum(课程) of the children would also be different. This would make it difficult for the parents to explain the concepts to their children. Parents also have the responsibility of designing the curriculum of students.
In today’s world, competition(比赛) is seen in every field, and school prepares children to face these competitions. However, homeschooling does not give the children a chance to compare with other kids. They will also not be aware of where they stand in educational position among their classmates. This may affect their future lives. Education is not the only thing that the children need to become successful human beings. It is necessary that they learn to communicate in the society, and public school provides them with such an environment, where they meet many people. Schools also provide children with a chance to take part in various activities to improve their overall development.
It is true that it has many benefits, but one must realize that school teaches children skills to face and survive.

Happiness is an abstract (抽象的)concept. When one thinks of a typically happy person, smiling, laughing and cheering are what usually come to mind. However, if people stop smiling or laughing, it doesn't necessarily mean that they are unhappy. Happiness has many different levels, and it is difficult to place the word in one type.
Many people believe as people grow older, they will feel more happiness. However, I just find they are not always so. When my twelve - year - old sister was asked what made her happy, she initially told me that sleeping made her happy, and then she looked at me for a reaction. When I had none, she changed her answer to food, then to fashion, and then finally to family. Each time she glanced at me, she looked for affirmation (肯定)that she had given a “right answer”
My younger cousin, Who is even younger than my sister, gave me an answer that surprised me. It wasn't eating candy or watching TV that made her happy; It was love. Considering the clear differences between my sister and cousin in their answers, I came to see that age didn't always largely contribute to happiness.
When I asked my grandmother what brought her happiness, she immediately answered my family” without hesitation. This is something I expected, as my grandma Is always a family -centered person. This is also consistent (一致的)with her culture, being from Italy and growing up during the 50s, when family values were at its highest point in society.
Asking myself this question, I think carefully about my answers. Sure, my family, friends and pets make me happy, but so do reading, writing and watching movies. This is why I have no answer to my own question.
There is no one single thing that makes me the happiest, because like everybody, my mood depends on many factors. Happiness depends on external factors as well as one's personality and age. This is why I have come to the conclusion that the journey of happiness cannot truly be defined, and that there isn't one thing above all that makes everyone the happiest.
1.What do we know about happiness from Paragraph 1?
A.It is valued by nearly all people*
B.It is easy to describe it with words.
C.Its highest level is often expressed with laughing.
D.It may have nothing to do with one's expressions.
2.Comparing her sister's and cousin's answers, the author realized that _______.
A.happiness comes from very small things
B.happiness doesn't always depend on age
C.little kids can sometimes give us inspiration
D.some abstract things can make people happier
3.What conclusion does the author draw about happiness?
A.Extreme happiness is hard to achieve.
B.Happiness is determined by many factors.
C.The happiest people are often open - minded.
D.One fs family gives him the most happiness.

Growing up in one of the toughest neighborhoods in New York City, my life was not always easy. My mother raised us in a city-owned apartment and my father suffered from drug problems. However, there was love at home. Quite often, my mother would have movie nights with us. One night, my mom came home with the movie To Sir, With Love, starring Sidney Poitier. In this movie, Mr. Poitier played a handsome, well-dressed, educated but strict teacher. As I watched, I was reminded of someone who I admired — Mr. John Walker.
Mr. Walker was my fifth-grade teacher. I remember getting my report card on the last day of fourth grade and seeing the words “New Teacher: Mr. Walker”. I was excited because I’d never had a male teacher before. On my first day of fifth grade, Mr. Walker laid down the class rules. I sat at my desk nervously, thinking, “How do I get out of his class?” I had no idea is class would be one of the most influential times in my life.
Mr. Walker always brought active things to our lives. He would give us weekly speeches, telling us that we didn’t have to be products of our environments — doing had things or spending a life in prison. Mr. Walker always told us that we could do anything we wanted to do.
The first time I ever left New York City was for a school trip on a farm that Mr. Walker arranged for us. It was an overnight trip. We prepared for months by holding bake sales to raise money. Mr. Walker worked so hard. He wanted us to experience life outside of our own small world.
One day, Mr. Walker said we could put on a play in class. He said, “Waliek, this is your chance to show us what you’ve got, so if you want the lead part, you’d better go home and learn it by tomorrow.” I ran home and remembered the whole play in one night. I think I did this more for Mr. Walker. He knew that I wanted to be an entertainer (表演者) and he believed in me. So he gave me that chance.
Another day, the school had a special performance and we noticed that Mr. Walker brought a special briefcase with him. As the host called on him, our class became nervous with excitement and curiosity. He opened his special briefcase and pulled out a gold trumpet (喇叭). Before he started, he devoted his performance to all the students, especially our class. It was the most beautiful music I’d ever heard. I was so shocked and amazed. My teacher was not only one of the coolest, best dressed, educated men, but he was also an entertainer — just like me.
When I created my list of people who had a great influence on me, there was no doubt in my mind that Mr. Walker topped my list. He changed the course of my life.

3.In order to open the mind of his students, Mr. Walker _____.
A. gave them speeches weekly
B. asked them to put on a play

A. He went to the cinema quite often during childhood.
B. He never left New York City during childhood.
C. He liked performing very much.
D. His father died from drug use.

The casual Friday concept (星期五便装日的概念) was one of the first signs that strict dress rules for offices were starting to relax. The principle of casual Fridays seems to have appeared around the 1950s. It was probably in response (回应) to the changing attitudes towards workplaces. Over time, some offices have relaxed their dress rules even more by using a "business casual" dress rule.
On casual Fridays, employees (员工) may wear clothes which are considered to be "business casual", meaning they still obey certain standards (标准). Clothes must be clean and in good condition, with no spots. Men are generally allowed to wear casual trousers and bright-colored clothes, and in some offices they may be allowed to wear button-down shirts or polo shirts, with or without a tie. Women often wear neat skirts or dresses; casual trousers are common and generally allowed to wear, except in very formal workplaces.
As a general rule, extremely casual clothes, like jeans, shorts, T-shirts, tank tops, and so on, are not encouraged on casual Fridays. Employees are still expected to make an effort to look professional, out of respect for their offices and their customers.
Many people feel that casual Fridays are good for employees’mood because they encourage employees to express their individuality (个性) and feel more comfortable in the offices. Others feel that business casual clothing and the concept of casual Fridays don’t show respect for the workplaces. Casual Fridays are dealt with differently, depending on the industry and the nation. The technology industry, for example, is well known for casual clothes in general, while major financial companies still dislike casual clothes.

A.the casual Friday concept has been out of fashion

D.employees who wear formal clothes lack individuality

B.Button-down shirts are allowed to wear in any formal workplace.
C.In general, leading financial companies don’t prefer casual clothing.
D.The technology industry requires employees to wear formal clothing.
