Climate change has caused a rise in sea levels.This has increased an amount of salt in fresh water used on farms near the sea.As a result farmers are unable to use fields close to the sea.Scientists call this process “salinization(盐碱化)”,which is reducing the world’s farm lands by 1 to 2 percent every year.

But a farmer in Holland,Marc Van Rijsselberghe started with an experiment,using a mixture of sea and fresh water to grow healthy and tasty vegetables.He put several kinds of plants in the fields.Mr.Van Rijsselberghe worked on the project with scientists from the Free University of Amsterdam.He divided a farm into eight areas.Every area was watered by different water.“We put in a lot of plants in the fields and then we put them in fresh water and in sea water with all the varieties(变化) between them,and then we saw which variety was surviving and which variety was dying.”A computer program created water with eight levels of salinity(盐度).Computerized measuring devices(测量仪器)controlled the water levels and the levels of salinity.

Mr.Van Rijsselberghe said he was able to harvest vegetables from most of the eight test areas.He said the vegetables were smaller than those grown in fresh water.But he said they had more sugar and salt,so they tasted better.

The farmer grew carrots,potatoes,cabbage and onions.He found that potatoes grew better than the other vegetables in the combination of sea and fresh water.Mr.Van Rijsselberghe said four kinds of these potatoes were recently sent to Pakistan,where thousands of hectares(公顷)of land have been damaged by salinization.Farmers in Pakistan will test the Dutch potatoes to see if they can be grown in those fields.

Climate change will increase US wildfires,and the smoky air will cause terrible problems in areas far beyond those burned,reports an environmental group Thursday.

Two-thirds of Americans,or nearly 212 million,lived in states suffering from wildfire smoke three years ago,according to the report by the Natural Resources Defense Council(NRDC).These areas,which had smoke for at least a week,were nearly 50 times greater than those burned directly by fire.

Nearly two dozen states had no wildfires within their borders in 2011,but eight of them still had at least one week of smoky air: Illinois,Missouri，Iowa,Kansas,Nebraska,Indiana,Wisconsin and Ohio.

Only 18 states and the District of Columbia had no people in touch with at least a week of smoke that year,although five of them—Alaska,California,Hawaii,Nevada and Utah—had a large area burned by wildfires.

The problem will only get worse.Knowlton says.Scientific research shows climate is causing higher temperatures and health problems.

The Maldives faces the threat of extinction from rising sea levels, but the government said on Thursday it was looking to the future with plans to build homes and a golf course that can float.

An increase in sea levels of just 18 to 59 centimeters would make the Maldives --- a nation of a number of tiny coral islands in the Indian Ocean --- not suitable for humans to live in by 2100, the UN’s climate change experts have warned.

The city, which has a population of 100,000, is already protected from rising sea levels by a 30-million-dollar sea wall, and the government is considering increasingly imaginative ways to fight climate change.

Nasheed, who held the world’s first underwater cabinet (内阁) meeting in October to highlight his people’s serious and difficult situation, has even spoken of buying land elsewhere in the world to enable Maldivians to relocate if their homes are completely covered.

He has also promised to turn his nation into a model for the rest of the world by becoming “carbon neutral (碳中和)” by 2020. His plan involves ending fossil fuel use and powering all vehicles and buildings from “green” sources such as burning coconut husks.

Climate change is expected to change ocean currents and the winds that help drive ocean currents. These changes will affect the distribution of heat within the oceans, and, as a result, affect changes in sea level.

Nowadays, scientists use two types of models to make predictions about the future of sea levels, but the two don’t agree. If scientists can't accurately predict sea-level increase for the coming years, the least we can do is measure what happening today with the help of the satellite, Jason-2, but it’s reaching the end of its operational life.

Health and climate scientists have mapped how climate change affects different parts of the world in different ways. The scientists point to the fact that changes in the past thirty years may, have been affecting human health. Possible effects include more deaths from extreme heat or cold, more storms and more crop failures in dry periods.

The health and climate scientists recently estimated that climate changes caused by human activity lead to more than one hundred and fifty thousand deaths each year. Cases of sickness are estimated at five million. And the W.H.O. says the numbers could rise quickly by the year of 2003.

The agreement aims to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) and other heat-trapping (吸热的) gases sent off into the air.
