Scientists think that there has been life on the earth for hundreds of millions of years. However, we haven't found life on other plants yet. Why not?
The Earth is a planet and it goes around the Sun. Seven other planets also go around the sun. None of them has an environment with air, so people and living things cannot grow. The Sun and its planets are called the solar system(太阳系). The solar system is a small part of our galaxy(星系).
But scientists have discovered many other galaxies in the universe. But they are far away and their light has to travel for many years to reach us. It is hard to understand how large the universe is.
So far, scientists have sent lots of spaceships to look at other plants in our solar system, and some spaceships have gone beyond the solar system. However, no one has discovered any life in space yet.
But why has no one from other plants sent us a message? Have they tried to send information to us? With so many stars in the universe, are we alone, or is there life out there in space? We don't know yet.
1.How many planets go around the sun?
A.Seven B.Eight C.Nine D.Ten
2.In order to look at other planets in the solar system, scientists have sent many________.
A.e-mails B.planes C.spaceships D.messages
3._______ has found life on other planets.
A.No one B.A scientist C.A traveler D.A student
4.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.All the planets have an environment with air. B.It’s easy to know how large the universe is.
C.There is only one galaxy in the universe. D.The solar system includes the sun and its planets.
5.The best title of this passage should be ________.
A.The Moon B.The Solar System C.The Stars at Night D.The Sun

Scientists think that there has been life on the earth for hundreds of millions of years. However, we have not found life on any other planets yet.
The earth is a planet and it goes around the sun, which is a star. Seven other planets also go around the sun. None of them has an environment like that of the earth, so scientists do not think they will find people and things on them. The sun and its planets are called the solar system (太阳系). The solar system is a small part of our galaxy (星系). There are billions of stars in the Galaxy, and our sun is only one of them.
Scientists have also discovered many other galaxies in the universe (宇宙). They are very far away and their light has to travel for many years to reach us. So how large is the universe? It is impossible to imagine.
Scientists have sent spaceships to the planet Mars (火星) to take photos. They have even sent spaceships to travel outside the solar system. However, no spaceship has travelled far enough to reach other stars in our Galaxy.
Scientists have always asked questions: with so many stars in the universe, are we alone, or is there life out there in space? Have there been visitors to the earth from other planets? Why has no one communicated with us? We do not know the answers… yet.
根据短文内容,判断下列句子正误。正确的用“A”表示,不正确的用“B”表示。
1.There are eight planets in the solar system.
2.There is more than one galaxy in the solar system.
3.The light from the stars in other galaxies has to travel for a long time to reach the earth.
4.Spaceships have visited most of the universe.
5. Scientists have received many messages from space.

Is there intelligent life on other planets? For years, scientists said “no” or “We don’t know.” But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers. They believe intelligent life exists (存在) somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact these beings.
Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. “This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life,” say Shostak and Barnet. The second reason is size—the universe is huge. “Tools like the Hubble telescope(哈勃望远镜)have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies,” says Shostak. “And our galaxy, the Milk Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to Earth.”
In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes(高倍望远镜) allow scientists to discover smaller planets—the size of Mars or Earth in other solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.
Have beings from space already visited Earth? “Probably not,” says Shostak. “It’s a long way away. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other way, such as radio signs. In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don’t have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other.”

4.Why haven’t beings from space visited us yet according to Shostak?
A. They are afraid of us.
B. It’s a long way away.
C. They don’t want to see us.
D. They don’t know how to use radio signs.
