The Red Panda isn’t much bigger than an average size house cat. At first you may think it’s a bear because of its name. They’re actually a member of the raccoon(浣熊) family which you can tell if you look at their appearance. The Red Panda has a long bushy tail that is useful in two ways. It helps them stay balanced when they are high up in the trees and it keeps them warm in cold weather. Their fur is thick and reddish brown, which may be why they’re known as the fire fox.
The Red Panda can be found in forested mountains. They’re originally from the forested mountain in the Himalayas in India, Nepal and Southern China. Bamboo is the most important part of their diet. They only eat the young leaves and shoots (嫩芽) of a bamboo plant. Red Pandas have a very low metabolic(新陈代谢的) rate in order to deal with their low energy diet and cool environmental temperatures.
They’re very shy and gentle and don’t hang around the wild too much during the day. If they feel endangered, they’ll stand on their back legs and make a hissing(嘶嘶) sound. Red Pandas are good climbers and spend most of their time living mainly in trees. Their claws are very strong and help them hold onto the branches. They sleep in an unusual way by curling up tightly and wrapping their tails around their heads while sitting on a branch. Sometimes they’ll sleep with their head beneath their chest and behind their back feet. This is the same position as an American raccoon sleeps.

Gertrude was just an average kid with an average life. She lived in an average sized house in an average neighborhood. At home, she helped out just enough to get by. At school, she did just enough homework to stay out of trouble. She had straight Cs in all of her classes.
One day Gertrude’s teacher, Mr. Mister, stopped her after class. “Gertrude,” he said, “I know that you can do better. I’ve seen the work you do in class, and some of it is amazing... Way better than C work.” Gertrude knew that there were moments when she tried a little harder than what everyone expected. But she just didn’t have confidence in herself. She didn’t really believe that she could change; in fact, she was scared by the thought of having the power to become whatever she wanted. She stopped listening to Mr. Mister about half way through his speech and just nodded her head until he stopped.
That night, Gertrude had a dream. It was ten years into the future and she was still living with her mom in her average neighborhood. A voice spoke in the dream: “The present is nothing more than the outcome of the choices made in the past. The future will be the results of the choices we make today.” Gertrude started crying average sized tears, because she knew that she helped shape the world in which she lived. She woke up with her pillow wet.
Gertrude was relieved (释然的) to be back in middle school. She took a little more care in getting herself ready that morning, and she felt better than normal. She tried harder in school, and she felt smarter than usual. She helped more around the house, and it looked better. Sure, there were still lots of things that Gertrude struggled with, but just trying her best made her feel better when she didn’t succeed. Gertrude even became great at failing by learning from her mistakes.

We live in a sweet world. An average American kid consumes(消耗) more than 20 teaspoons of sugar per day, and adults eat 50% more sugar today than they did in the 1970s. We all know that too much sugar isn’t good for us. Researchers at the University of Utah used mice to make a study to prove the toxic effects of eating more sugar. They found it could influence people’s health seriously.
During the 58-week-long study, mice were fed a diet containing 25% more sugar. This percentage is equal to a healthy human diet along with three cans of soda daily. The team found that these mice were twice as likely to die as mice without eating so much sugar. Though the mice did not show signs of obesity or high blood pressure, male mice produced 25% fewer offspring(后代) than the other mice.
The reason why mice were chosen for research by scientists is not far to seek. “Mice have the genetic(基因) structure similar to humans’. Most substances(物质) that are harmful to mice are also harmful to people; it’s likely that those important physical problems that cause the rising death rate among mice can also influence people,” says the study author James Ruff of the University of Utah. Findings from this study reveal negative effects that are not as detectable as weight gain or heart problems. Sugar can contribute to long-term changes in the body that can affect development and even shorten lives.
Different types of sugar have different effects on the human body. Some of the sugar we consume comes from foods we might expect—candy, soda, and cookies. But much of the sugar that we eat is hidden. Food companies add large amounts of sugar to items we may not classify as sweets. To help cut down extra sugar consumption, nutrition experts suggest looking at the ingredients on food packages. Cutting sugar out of the American diet altogether may be difficult, but making every effort to control our nation’s desire for sugar will avoid a sweeter future.

D. Because mice are sensitive to the sweet taste.
