Chinese writer Mo Yan won the 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature (诺贝尔文学奖). He is the first Chinese to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Mo Yan was born in 1955 in Gaomi, Shandong Province. His parents are farmers. When he was 12 years old, Mo Yan had to leave school to work, first on the farm, later in a factory. In 1976 he joined the army, After he became a soldier, he began to study literature and write articles. His real name is Guan Moye. Mo Yan is his pen name.  It means "don't speak"

His first story came out in 1981. His novel Red Sorghum came out in 1987, Soon the   director Zhang Yimou made it into a film, and it won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 1988. Mo Yan also wrote many other famous novels, such as Frog, Sandalwood Punishment and Big Breasts and Wide Hips. Lots of people read them, and people translate some of his works into English, French and many other languages.
