We know the mosquito very well. Mosquitoes fly everywhere. They can be found almost all over the world, and there are more than 2,500 kinds of them.
No one likes the mosquito. But the mosquito may decide that she loves you. She? Yes, she. It’s true that male mosquito doesn’t bite(咬) and only the female mosquito bites because she needs blood to lay eggs. She is always looking for things or people she wants to bite. If she likes what she finds, she bites. But if she doesn’t like your blood, she will turn to someone else for more delicious blood. Next time a mosquito bites you, just remember you are chosen. You’re different from the others!
If the mosquito likes you, she lands on your body without letting you know. She bites you so quickly and quietly that you may not feel anything different. After she bites, you will have an itch(痒) on your body because she puts something from her mouth together with your blood. By the time the itching begins, and she has flown away.
And then what happens? Well, after her delicious dinner, the mosquito feels tired. She just wants to find a place to have a good rest. There, on a leaf or a wall, she begins to lay eggs, hundreds of eggs.

Mosquitoes have an extraordinary ability to target humans far away and fly straight to their unprotected skin. Regrettably, mosquitoes can do more than cause an itchy( 发痒的)wound. Some mosquitoes spread several serious diseases, including Dengue, yellow fever and malaria.
Over one million people worldwide die from these diseases each year. New research now shows how mosquitoes choose who to bite.
Mosquitoes need blood to survive. They are attracted to human skin and breath. They smell the carbon dioxide gas, which all mammals breathe out. This gas is the main way for mosquitoes to know that a warm-blooded creature is nearby.
But mosquitoes also use their eyes and sense of touch. Michael Dickinson is a professor at the California Institute of Technology. His research shows how these small insects, with even smaller brains, use three senses to find a blood meal.
Michael Dickinson's team used plumes( 烟 )- a material that rises into the air of carbon dioxide gas into a wind tunnel. They then used cameras to record the mosquitoes. The insects followed the plume.
Then, the scientists placed dark objects on the lighter colored floor and walls of the tunnel. Mr Dickinson said, at first, the mosquitoes showed no interest in the objects at all. "What was quite striking and quite surprising is that the mosquitoes fly back and forth for hours. These are hungry females and they completely ignore the objects on the floor and wall of the tunnel, But the moment they get a hit of CO2, they change their behavior quite obviously and now would become attracted to these little visual spots.
This suggested to the researchers that a mosquito's sense of smell is more important in the search for food. Once mosquitoes catch a smell of a human or animal, they also follow visual signals.
1.What do mosquitoes mainly use to find their targets?
A.Sense of smell. B.Sense of touch.
C.Sense of sight. D.Smart brains
2.How did the mosquitoes respond to the objects firstly in the experiment?
A.They flew to the dark ones B.They caught and stuck to them.
C.They took no notice of them. D.They attached themselves to them
3.How can we avoid being attacked by mosquitoes according to the text?
A.Don't let them see us
B.Use dark objects to stop them
C.Make them fly back and forth for hours
D.Attract them to objects full of carbon dioxide gas
4.What can be the best title for the text?
A.How Do Mosquitoes Survive?
B.How Do Mosquitoes Choose to Bite You?
C.Why Do Mosquitoes Need Blood?
D.Why Do Mosquitoes Attack the Human Being?

Japanese researchers are genetically changing mosquitoes so that they become carriers of a vaccine (疫苗) that could vaccinate millions for free. The researchers have already genetically changed a mosquito species so that its saliva (唾液) contains a protein that acts as a vaccine against leishmaniasis(利什曼病), a deadly disease that leads to terrible skin problems. The team confirmed that mice bitten by the genetically-engineered mosquito developed an antibody to the disease, meaning they had built up immunity (免疫力).
“You would be vaccinated without even noticing. You wouldn’t need any drug and you wouldn’t need to show up at a fixed place for mass vaccinations,” said Shigeto Yoshida, the associate professor who has led the research. “Repeated bites would only strengthen the immunity.”
Similarly the mosquitoes could be used to help treat malaria (疟疾), perhaps a decade from now, said the malaria expert.
Nearly one million people die each year from malaria ---- most of them are children ---- mainly in Africa and Asia, according to the World Health Organization. Now a problem is that no effective vaccine exists. “There is a treatment that works, but it is beyond the reach of people who need to worry about food for tomorrow,” Yoshida said.
However, Yoshida expects that the genetically-engineered mosquito will finally help wipe out the deadly disease in the developing world. “Technically speaking, I believe it’s a matter of 10 years or so, but it’s not clear whether society would accept it,” he said.
Another problem is that the genetically-engineered mosquito may still pick up and spread the infected blood of a person who has already caught malaria. Yoshida’s team is hoping it can solve this problem by developing a mosquito species that kills the malaria virus inside its own body.
1.How have scientists turned mosquitoes into carriers of a vaccine?
A. By changing their genes. B. By killing the virus in their bodies.
C. By letting them bite mice. D. By injecting vaccines into their bodies.
2.Which of the following is NOT an advantage of using mosquitoes as vaccine carriers?
A. It’s free of charge. B. It’s convenient.
C. It’s more effective. D. It’s unnoticeable.

A. People welcome the idea of using mosquitoes to treat malaria.
B. Mosquitoes carrying vaccines may still spread malaria.
C. It is not long before people will use mosquitoes to get rid of malaria.
D. A mosquito can kill the malaria virus inside its own body.
4.The main purpose of the passage is to .
A. introduce a possible solution to malaria
B. encourage people to use mosquitoes to fight against diseases

What do you know about the sea? We know that it looks very pretty when the sun is shining on it. We also know that it can be very rough when there is a strong wind. What other things do we know about it?
The first thing to remember is that the sea is very big. When you look at the map of the world you will find there is more water than land. The sea covers three quarters of the world.
The sea is also very deep in some places. It is not deep everywhere. Some parts of the sea are very shallow. But in some places the depth of the sea is very great. There is one spot, near Japan, where the sea is nearly 11 kilometers deep! The highest mountain in the world is about 9 kilometers high. If that mountain were put into the sea at that place, there would he 2 kilometers of water above it ! What a deep place !
If you have swum in the sea, you know that it is salty. You can taste the salt. Rivers, which flow into the sea, carry salt from the land into the sea. Some parts of the sea are saltier than other parts. There is one sea, called the Dead Sea, which is very salty. It is so salty that swimmers cannot sink! Fish cannot live in the Dead Sea!
In most parts of the sea, there are plenty of fishes and plants. Some live near the top of the sea. Others live deep down. There are also millions of tiny living things that float in the sea. These floating things are so small that it is hard to see them. Many fish live by eating these.
The sea can be very cold. Divers who go deep down in the sea know this. On the top the water may be warm. When the diver goes downwards, the sea becomes colder and colder. Another thing happens. When the diver goes deeper, the water above presses down on him. It squeezes him. Then the diver has to wear clothes made of metal. But he cannot go very deep. Some people who wanted to go very deep used a very strong diving ship! They went down to the deepest part of the sea in it. They went down to a depth of eleven kilometers !
1.When does the sea look beautiful?
A. When it is calm. B. When the weather is fine.
C. When there is a strong wind. D. When there is a storm.
2. How much of the earth’s surface does land cover?
A. 15%. B. 25%. C. 30%. D. 45%.
3.Why does the writer cite(引用) the sea somewhere near Japan?
A. To show that the sea in some places is very deep.
B. To show that the sea in some places is very shallow.
C. To show that its depth is 9 kilometers greater than the height of the highest mountain.
D. To show that its depth is 11 kilometers greater than the height
of the highest mountain.
4.Which of the following statements about the Dead Sea is NOT true?
A. Swimmers cannot sink. B. It is a safe place for swimmers.
C. It is extremely salty. D. Fish can be found in it.
