Shine received seven Oscar nominations (提名), and Geoffrey Rush won best actor for his performance of Helfgott.

My father was left fatherless at the age of 12, and pretty much on his own then.
Because of that, he was never the loving type. He didn’t have time to offer a pat on the back or a loving hug(拥抱). He was built for work, and work he did—7 days a week—expecting my brothers and me to do the same.
Growing up, I spent much of my free time laboring with him on jobs around the house. To him, working alongside someone was the best way to show you cared. The way you felt about a person was clear from the fact you spent time with the person; you didn’t need to express your feelings. As far as I know, he never did. Except once.
I was 22, graduated from college, and leaving home for the last time. He and I had loaded my things into the car and were talking in the garage. Without warning, he wrapped me in his huge arms and hugged me tight.“You were always my favorite,”he said.“I love you, and I’m going to miss you.”
With that, he shooed(用“嘘”声驱赶)me into the car and then left for the house, tears in his eyes.
I was floored by his response—and then felt proud, pleased and grateful. Yet some small part of me also wondered why it had taken him so long to express his love.
I can accept now that it wasn’t possible for him to be warm—his feelings were buried too deeply under the layers of a tough life. Thanks to my father’s once-in-a-lifetime hug, I’ve come to realize something he never could. A hug is more than simple physical touch. It is a lightning-like connection between two people. A link that expresses love, encouragement, comfort-all the emotions that can strengthen a relationship, even turn a life around.
1.According to the author, his father didn’t show his feelings easily because of all the following reasons EXCEPT _____.
A.he didn’t think it important to show his love
B.he always worked around the house and paid no attention to his kids
C.he himself grew up without love from his own father
D.he thought the best way to show feelings was to spend time together
2.The word“floored”in the passage can be best replaced by _____.
A.frightened B.flooded
C.hit D.confused
3.It can be inferred from the passage that the author will probably _____.
A.hide his feelings for his kids as deeply as his father did
B.offer physical touch like hugs to his own kids quite often
C.not spend time working around the house with his own kids
D.not understand his father’s love for him for the rest of his life
4.The purpose of the writing is to _____.
A.mention the importance of a hug in our life
B.tell us an unhappy childhood without father’s care
C.share a touching story of the author and his father
D.show the difficult relationship between child and parents

The Body Temperature
The temperature of your body should be always just the same, no matter whether the weather is hot or cold. That is why the doctor uses his thermometer (温度计)when your are sick.
The body keeps the same temperature all the time ,because it balances the heat it produces and it gives off. It is always burning up food and , producing heat. It can produce heat faster when it needs to give off heat than when it becomes too warm. Let’s see how this happen.
The heat of your body is given off mainly through the skin. When you are cold, your skin is tight and shows “good flesh”. When you get chilly, you must dance around to keep warm or else you will shiver. Then your muscles begin to work, burn up fuel, and produce more heat. It is not pleasant to shiver, so you usually prefer to warm up by exercise, or put on more clothes to keep heat in.
When you are warm, the skin is loose and soft. It is so supplied with blood that heat is given off rapidly. If you get too warm, you begin to sweat ,and more body heat is used in evaporating the moisture(水蒸气) from your skin. You wear less clothing, too, in warm weather or warm room, so that warm can be given off freely. You feel less like exercising because your body is warm already, and the extra heat produced by exercise makes you uncomfortable.
You can see from the way you feel differently in different kinds of weather. In summer, when it is warm, you feel tired and lazy. You do not care to work or play, but enjoy lying and doing nothing. When you get out of doors in winter, the cold air makes you feel lively. You want to play.

This is a simple description of what happens to your body when your kidneys (肾脏)don't work efficiently.Your body is not thoroughly emptied of waste products.Other areas of the body such as blood pressure and red blood cell production are affected and the insidious process that may lead to kidney failure begins.
It's not uncommon for people to lose up to 90% of their kidney function before developing any symptoms. There may be no warning signs. This makes early detection (诊查)difficult.
Kidney's main job is to remove toxins(毒素) and unwanted water from our blood.Every day our kidneys clean an average of 200 litres of blood.Kidney failure may be a gradual and silent process, going unnoticed because there is no obvious pain.
Research shows that more than 35% of the patients requiring dialysis(透析)do not see a kidney specialist before they have to do so.Some risk factors for kidney disease such as age and genetic make-up are out of our control; however, some changes in lifestyle may help prevent kidney damage. Two major risk factors for kidney disease, diabetes (糖尿病)and high blood pressure, have been on the rise over the last few decades. Both conditions are chiefly affected by being overweight and not getting enough exercises, which are the potential (潜在的) risk factors for the kidney disease.
1.The author gives the example of the house we live in to indicate that ______.
A.it doesn't matter much if the waste in our body is not emptied in time

Be Your Own Best Friend
Why would you want to become your own best friend? There are a number of benefits of creating your own support system from within rather than relying on your partner, friends or family to be there for you when you’re suffering. We all have it in us to give ourselves what we need, without seeking it from outside. 1. Here’s how to become your own best friend.
1.Be nice to yourself
The first step in becoming a friend to yourself is to treat yourself like you would treat a friend. 2. Start by accepting your good qualities, talents and abilities and begin to appreciate yourself.
2. Imagine how you would support a friend in the same situation
Think about a loved one, a friend, a family member, or someone dear to you and imagine that they are in the same situation you are facing. 3. Then consider how to best offer help and advice to them. Allow yourself to feel supported, and give yourself what you need.
Write down the words that you would say to your greatest friend and then say them gently to yourself.
3. 4.
Following the theme of considering how you would help a dear friend, you need to start taking your own advice and putting your own needs first. Do you need a day off from work? 5. Whatever it is that you need, allow yourself to put it at the top of the list rather than the bottom.
Use these methods to become your own best friend and start being there for yourself!
A. Honor your needs
B. Believe in yourself.
C. A long hot bath?
D. Help them first and then they will help you.
E. That means that you need to stop being doubtful of yourself.
F. Think about how they’re struggling, suffering with this problem.
G. Isn’t it far better to know how to support yourself in times of need?

C. Practice basic respect towards yourself.
D. Be honest with yourself and with others.
E. Think about what it means to respect someone.
F. Recognize when people disrespect you and take steps to stop it.
G. Respect yourself is to respect others.
How to Respect Yourself
A lack of self-respect can prevent you from fulfilling your potential and developing healthy relationships. Here are some steps to help you know how to respect yourself.
1.________________________ The qualities that we respect vary from person to person, and the way we express it varies from culture to culture. Generally, we respect people who have more experience and are more accomplished than ourselves. But there is also a basic level of respect that most people will agree is a right, and does not need to be earned. So think about what it means to respect others. Here are some widely agreed-upon signals of respect: You don’t steal from, harm, or insult them; you are honest with them; you listen to what they say, consider their opinions, and avoid interrupting them.
2._______________________ We often do things for ourselves that we would never dream of doing for someone we care about. Whatever you believe to be respectful, apply it to yourself. Don’t harm yourself. Don’t insult yourself. Don’t steal from yourself. Be honest with yourself. Develop your own opinions and don’t be afraid to stand by them.
3._______________________ A person with self-respect doesn’t allow others to treat them badly, and would rather not be around someone who is disrespectful. This might seem obvious, but there are many times when we accept being treated badly. When someone doesn’t give you basic respect, you need to be able to say, in one way or another, “You just disrespected me and that’s not acceptable! If you don’t respect me, I won’t spend time with you any more.” Can you say that, and mean it? Can you turn your back on someone who’s clearly shown that they don’t respect you? Once you do, you’ll feel your sense of self-respect go up.
4._______________________ When you make an effort to keep your body in good working order, you’ll not only feel better physically, but also feel a sense of pride. Respecting your body also means not insulting it for what it is, naturally. Make an effort to get fit and stay healthy. Focus on the things you can change and improve, and do them because it feels good.
5._______________________ The more you know about yourself, the more you’ll see and appreciate how unique you really are. And you’ll respect yourself more. Discover your principles, personality, and talents. Stop waiting for other people’s approval and start developing your own standards. Develop a unique and original way of expressing your opinions while at the same time being a good listener.

Imagine, one day, getting out of bed in Beijing and being at your office in Shanghai in only a couple of hours, and then, after a full day of work, going back home to Beijing and having dinner there.
Sounds unusual, doesn't it? But it's not that unrealistic, with the development of China’s high-speed railway system. And that’s not all. China has an even greater high-speed railway plan to connect the country with Southeast Asia, and eventually Eastern Europe.
China is negotiating(谈判) to extend its own high-speed railway network to up to 17 countries in 1 0 to 15 years, eventually reaching London and Singapore.
China has proposed three such projects. The first would possibly connect Kunming with Singapore via Vietnam and Malaysia. Another could start in Urumqi and go through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and possibly to Germany. The third would start in the northeast and go north through Russia and then into Western Europe.
If China’s plan for the high-speed railway goes forward, people could zip over from London to Beijing in under two days. The new system would still follow China’s high-speed railway standard. And the trains would be able to go 346 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as some airplanes.
China’s bullet train(高速列车), the one connecting Wuhan to Guangzhou, already has the World’s fastest average speed. It covers 1,069 kilometers in about three hours.
Of course, there are some technical challenges to overcome. There are so many issues that need to be settled, such as safety, rail gauge(轨距), maintenance(保养) of railway tracks. So, it’s important to pay attention to every detail. But the key issue is really money. China is already spending hundreds of billions of yuan on domestic railway expansion.
China prefers that the other countries pay in natural resources rather than with capital(资本的)investment. Resources from those countries could stream into China to sustain development.
It’ll be a win-win project. For other countries, the railway network will definitely create more opportunities for business, tourism and so on, not to mention the better communication among those countries.
For China, such a project would not only connect it with the rest of Asia and bring some much-needed resources, but would also help develop China’s far west.We foresee that in the coming decades, millions of people will migrate to the western regions, where the land is empty and resources unused. With high-speed trains, people will set up factories and business centers in the west once and for all. And they’ll trade with Central Asian and Eastern European countries.
1.China’s new high-speed railway plan will be a win-win project because________.
A. China will get much-needed resources and develop its western regions
B. China and the countries involved will benefit from the project in various ways
C. China will develop its railway system and communication with other countries
D. the foreign countries involved will develop their railway transportation, business and tourism
2.According to the passage, the greatest challenge to the new high-speed railway plan is________.
A. technical issues B. safety of the system
C. financial problems D. maintenance of railway tracks
3.Which of the following words best describes the author’s attitude
towards China’s high-speed railway plan?
A. Critical. B. Reserved. C. Doubtful D. Positive.
4.Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A. New Railway Standards B. Big Railway Dreams
C. High-speed Bullet Trains D. International Railway Network
