Antarctica(南极洲)is the coldest place on the earth, but every year thousands of tourists go there. Why do they go? There are no famous buildings, no hotels and no restaurants. There are some beaches, but nobody wants to go swimming. Why do people want to take a vacation in Antarctica?
Most people go to see the birds, the animals and the amazing scenery. There are seals(海豹)lying on the ice. There are whales swimming in the ocean. You can also watch penguins jumping into water from icebergs(冰山). It’s one of the last untouched places on the planet.
It’s possible to visit Antarctica by plane, but most people go there by ship. That’s because the ships are comfortable places to stay, and the journey (by sea) is part of the vacation. All tourists visit Antarctica in the summer. In the winter it’s too cold for visitors, but in the summer—from November to March—it’s warmer than many people think. In some parts of Antarctica in January, it’s about 0℃. So it can be warmer there than it is in Beijing in January. When you visit there, you don’t need to bring a lot of special clothes. Instead, you need to bring sunglasses. The sunshine on the snow and ice is very bright.
Tourists are not the only people who go to Antarctica. In the summer months there are about 4,000 scientists and other people living and working there, and a few of them stay for the long, drink winters. Tourists can visit some of these people and learn about their work in this amazing place.
1.Why do most tourists visit Antarctica?
_________________________________________________________
2.How can people go to Antarctica?

3.When is the best time for people to visit Antarctica?

4.It’s warm in Antarctica in July, isn’t it?

5.Who also go to Antarctica besides the tourists?

Every year in October, my school holds a swimming competition. This is a day where we all skip (跳过) a day of school, and instead spend it taking part in swimming races.
I took part in six different races. I came first in one of them! However in the other five, I came second . We also helped the younger students race, by swimming alongside them, holding them above the water and making sure they stay safe.
In this event, we compete not only for ourselves, but for our color house to win. The students are sorted(分类) into four different color houses. So we can earn(赢得) points for our success as a group, learn teamwork and do our best. These houses are Blue, Green, Red and Gold. When we are not racing, we are cheering for our friends and trying to earn extra points for our color house for good sportsmanship(运动员精神).
At the end of the day, there are two major awards. The first award is age champion. This medal is given to the boy and girl from each age group, who perform(表现) the best out of all the other children competing against them. The other award, and maybe the most important, is the winning color house. Different to past years, Blue won for best performance and the other houses were disappointed.
Overall, it was a fantastic and exciting day full of swimming, competition and fun that we all look forward to every year.

Each and every year, during Chongyang Festival, citizens of China celebrate the elders in their families and communities. It’s a special tradition which is rooted in the deep value that Chinese culture places on honouring their elders.
Sadly, many of our aging population are seniors without sons, daughters or grandchildren to visit. While they may have great friends, they no doubt miss the tender and loving relationships unique to families. To fill this void(空虚), many volunteers turned up on October 28 at nursing homes around the country in order to spend time with the residents. In some cases, they performed humble(谦逊的) gestures of kindness, such as combing their hair or washing their feet.
While the kind acts were appreciated, one embarrassing story out of Anhui province raised a valuable question. Reportedly, one old gentleman had his feet washed seven times during the day by different volunteers. Is this genuinely(真诚地) caring for the elderly? Many of the residents at the home said that those gestures do not make them feel cared for at all. Their family members or community volunteers may drop by for a few hours of token time, but soon they disappear back into their busy lives.
There is nothing we can give that is more valuable or appreciated than our time. While you may feel like there is barely enough time to care for your many responsibilities, might it be possible to spare just a moment as you walk home from school to sit with a senior who lives in your community? Just five minutes is not going to prevent you from getting your homework done, but it may totally change a day of loneliness into a day of joy for one old man or woman. Do you live far from your grandparents? Why not pick up the phone and let them know you’re thinking of them? Or maybe you could remind them of the “good old days” and mail them a short letter. Imagine their surprise and joy!
We live in a complicated(复杂的) and busy world, but kindness and caring is still a very simple thing.
1.People in China celebrate the elders at Chongyang Festival, don’t they?
2.Who appeared at nursing homes to spend time with the residents?
3.How many times did one old gentleman have his feet washed during the day?
4.Which gestures can make elders feel cared for ?
5.What did the family members of the residents at the home do?
6.Have you been to any nursing homes before? What did you do for the residents there?
If you haven’t, please tell us what you did for the elders around you in the past.

World Kindness Day is a celebration which takes place on 13 November each year. It was introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement. It is celebrated in many countries, including Canada, Japan, Australia and some other countries. World Kindness Day is celebrated to highlight acts of kindness passing on the positive(正面的)power.
Why be kind? Few people would disagree with the idea that a kind action is good for the soul(灵魂). It is a win-win situation because it leads to a sense of well-being both for thereceiver of this kind action, as well as for the person who does the action. As a simple example, let's imagine you have a workmate who always does a very good job. How about taking a moment to mention this to them, just in conversation or perhaps by email? The effects of this will probably be quite clear: your workmate will be happy to receive some praise and, in addition, you will probably feel good about yourself for having spread a little joy.
Many organisations try to encourage people to be kind, wherever and whenever they can. Perhaps the strongest supporters of this idea are the Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Foundation. The RAK website suggests some ways to show kindness. Generally, these fall into three categories. The first is interpersonal kindness. Some examples are giving old clothes to charity(慈善机构) or writing a good comment about a restaurant that you like. The second is environmental kindness, which could mean simply recycling or organising a group event to clean a local park or beach. The third category is less obvious: personal kindness, which means treating yourself kindly. Some examples are taking a walk in nature or setting yourself an objective to complain less. The logic is that by being kind to yourself, you will surely be kinder to the world around you.
Most experts on kindness agree that it has a sort of ripple effect. This means that one kind action is more likely to lead to more and more. So don't wait for kindness to find you today, go and start a new ripple!
1.When is World Kindness Day?
2.Why is World Kindness Day celebrated?
3.Why should people be kind?
4.According to RAK, what does"personal kindness” mean?
5.What does the passage mainly tell us?

Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题):
Isabel Allende’s novels are enjoyed all over the world. She is famous for her creativity and imagination. And her own personal story is as amazing as any she has ever told in a novel. Born in 1942, Allende’s family moved often during her childhood. She went to school in South America, Europe, and Asia. As a young woman, she became a journalist in Santiago, Chile’s (智利) capital city. Then, she got married and had two children. In 1970, everything began to change.
Leaving home
Isabel Allende’s uncle was a political leader named Salvador Allende. In 1970, her uncle was elected president of Chile. In 1973, Augusto Pinochet led a military takeover (军事接管) of the Chilean government. President Allende was killed during the fighting. When Isabel Allende began to fear for her life, she and her family decided to move to Venezuela (委内瑞拉).
From Newspaper to Novels
It was really a painful experience for Isabel Allende to flee her country. Without this experience, however, Allende says she never would have begun writing novels. Then she got a phone call from Chile. Her grandfather was dying. She knew she could not return home to be with him, but she wanted to respect him in some way. “I decided to write a letter about all the things he told us when we were young,” Allende explains. Later, he wrote a long letter which became Allende’s first novel, The House of the Spirits.
The Writing Life
“I spent ten, twelve hours a day in a room, writing,” Allende says, “I don’t talk to anybody; I don’t answer the phone.” When she finishes the first draft (草稿) of a new novel, Allende mails a copy to her toughest critic (最严厉的评论家). “I send it to my mother in Chile. She reads it and comes here with a red pencil. We fight for a month at least.” Allende then goes back to work until she feels the book is finished. “The storytelling is the fun part,” she says. “The writing can be a lot of work!”
1.Isabel Allende’s own personal story is very amazing, isn’t it?
2.What was Isabel Allende before she got married?
3.How did the military takeover influence (影响) Isabel Allende’s life?
4.Why did Isabel Allende start writing her first novel?
5.How do you understand “We fight for a month at least” in the last paragraph?
6.What kind of person do you think Isabel Allende is? Give your reason(s).

April Fools’ Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. In France, it’s called “Fish of April.” In Scotland, the holiday is often called “Gowkie Day.” In Iraq, the holiday is called “April Lie.”
People have celebrated April Fools’ Day for a long time. Some believe the tradition comes from the ancient Romans more than two thousand years ago. It was a day of playing games and pretending to be someone else.
Others say the day for fooling began in France in 1564, when King Charles changed the yearly calendar. He moved New Year’s Day from April 1st to January 1st. Many people did not know about the change because of communication problems back then. Some people continued to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1st. Other people called them April Fools and played jokes on them.
In the United States, April Fools’ Day is just a day of joking and playing tricks on friends. These kinds of jokes are also called pranks. These jokes usually end in the shouting “April Fools!”
Simple pranks, like telling a friend a funny lie or making prank phone calls, are still common. But, major companies also get in on April Fools’ Day fun in a much bigger way. A few years ago, on April 1st, Starbucks announced it was introducing new coffee cup sizes—Plenta and Micra. The very large cups, bigger than a human head, remained useful for customers even after finishing all that coffee. According to Starbucks, the cups could be used as a rain hat, a pot for plants, or a lampshade (灯罩).
More and more, people use smart phone apps to play pranks on their friends on April Fools’ Day. One smart phone app, Cat Facts, sends funny facts about cats to your friends’ phones, every day.
Do you have any ideas for April Fools’ Day pranks? Have your friends played pranks on you before? Tell us about one in the comments (评论) section!

Canada is the second-largest country in the world, with almost 10 million square kilometres of landmass. Due to(由于) its size, it is divided into four different regions(地区).
The Atlantic Provinces
Fishing is the old industry in this region. Agricultural crops, such as fruit and potatoes, and forests, which produce paper and lumber(木材), form part of the industry. Traditionally depending on fishing and farming, they are developing other natural resources, such as oil and copper.
Central Canada
Ontario and Quebec form the industrial and manufacturing(制造业的) heart of Canada. They produce three quarters of Canada’s goods. More than half of Canada’s population lives in the cities in the southern part of Ontario and Quebec. Most of the people living in Quebec speak French.
The West Coast
The British Columbia Coast is Canada’s western continental coastline(海岸线 ). Europeans settled(定居) in British Columbia in the early 1800s. The railroad built by the government in the late 1800s made moving much easier. Thousands of Chinese came to British Columbia during this period to work on the railroad. British Columbia has the most valuable forest industry in Canada.
Salmon(鲑鱼) fishing is not only a popular sport, but also an important part of the industry. Pacific salmon are exported(出口) all over the world.
The North
The Yukon and the Northwest Territories(领土) cover a third of Canada. This huge region has a very small population. Most of the people are natives. There are several native languages, which are equal(平等的) in status(地位) to English and French. During the Gold Rush at the end of the 1800s, thousands of miners(矿工) came to make their fortune(财富).
