Most people consider skydiving (高空跳伞) a product of the 20th century, but its history actually goes further back than that. The Chinese attempted to parachute (跳伞) in the 10th century, a thousand years before we did. The Chinese did what we would today call base diving; that is, they jumped off a place that would allow them to float from a height to the ground.
The first person to attempt to parachute was a Frenchman named Jacques Garnerin. He jumped from his hot-air balloon at the end of the 18th century and did tricks on the way down and stupefied the crowds by landing safely on the ground. At the end of the 19th century, Kathie Paulus, a brave German woman, became famous for her skydiving skills.
Once the airplane was invented, skydiving took on a whole new form. The airplane made it possible to dive from greater heights at greater speeds, allowing for more range in the movements in the air. A woman named Tiny Broadwick became the first woman to jump from a plane in 1913 and dive free fall in 1914.
Skydiving was not called skydiving until the middle of the 1950s, when Ronald Young invented the word. It had been called parachuting before this and was mainly used by the military (军事) to land troops in inland locations, or for pilots to jump out of their planes when necessary. Once World War I was over, parachuting became a sport, which we now call skydiving.
After World War II, this activity became more a hobby than a military action. Soldiers were trained in parachuting and enjoyed the thrill so much that they continued on for fun. From this, teams and competitions were formed. Skydiving schools appeared in the late 1950s and now it is a recognized extreme sport enjoyed by many.
1.The underlined word “stupefied” in paragraph 2 probably means “_______”.

B.Skydiving became popular after the airplane was invented. |
C.The word skydiving was first used in a military action. |
D.There were no skydiving schools until the late 1950s. |
4.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Skydiving is not a military action any more. |
B.Kathie Paulus is famous for her skydiving skills. |
C.The first person who parachuted was from Germany. |
D.The history of skydiving is longer than that of parachuting. |
5.What would be the best title for this text?
A.The history of skydiving | B.The popularity of skydiving |
C.What is skydiving? | D.Why is skydiving an extreme sport? |

The time may soon come when we say goodbye to most of the world’s languages. Today humans express themselves in over 6,000 different languages. But that is quickly changing. Many scientists say that over half of these languages will disappear within the next 50 years. After 100 years, the languages used in the world will not be more than 20.
Why? It is because people from different cultures live and work together much more often than before. This brings changes. The languages of the world’s main culture are replacing the languages of the smaller cultures. Most international trade takes place in world languages such as English. People respect their own cultures and traditions, but when it comes to getting a job, knowing a world language is often necessary. It may mean the difference between success and failure.
Technology works on the change of languages in an even more amazing way. Modern media such as radio and television give young people in developing countries much knowledge about the world. But this knowledge doesn’t come in words from the mouths of their parents or the elders in their neighborhood. It usually comes in the language of a different culture.
People in different cultures think it good for them to share a popular language. They can quickly share ideas and work together. Knowing the same language means easier communication and is a basis for trust.
Is the death of a small local language such a terrible thing? The answer is maybe. Many cultures may have words for many useful things we know nothing about. If their languages die, their valuable wisdom may be lost forever. The future of the world’s language depends on our actions now. Will we protect endangered languages or allow them to quietly disappear?
Time will have the last word.
1.Scientists say that within 50 years, perhaps, there will be only ________ languages in the world.
A. 4,000 B. over 3,000 C. no more than 20 D. around 3,000
2.The passage says that if all the people in the world knew a major world language, ________.
A. radio and television would all use the language
B. it would be easier for them to share their ideas
C. lessons at schools would be taught in the language
D. people would respect their own culture more
3.Also, the passage says that if nobody spoke the languages of smaller cultures, ________.
A. knowledge would come from the mouths of the elders
B. many of the words for things we do not know would be lost
C. people would have difficulty in working together
D. there would be no smaller cultures
4.By saying “Time will have the last word,” the writer means “________”.
A. let us wait and see
B. we have time to do something
C. it is too late to do anything
D. it is only a problem of time

When it comes to President Obama, most of his personal business is already known by the public. Personal information about his children, Malia and Sasha, however, has been kept a little more under wraps.
The New York Times recently released a list of rules that Michelle Obama has mentioned over the years that Malia and Sasha must follow during their time in the White House,as well as in general. See how the first family educates their children:
The girls must write reports about what they've seen on their trips, even if it's not required by their school.
Malia may use her cell phone only on the weekend, and she and her sister cannot watch television or use a computer for anything but homework during the week.

Malia must learn to do laundry(洗衣服)before she leaves for college.
The girls have to eat their vegetables, and if they say they are not hungry, they cannot ask for cookies or chips later.
While these might be shocking to some,Michelle said,“They're not little princesses. It's just basic rules, boundaries, and expectations that we would have normally.”
Michelle also mentions another set of rules:
The girls must do their chores(家务),though the White House has a large staff. Malia and Sasha have chores of their own.
They must play a team sport, because it's about learning how to play on a team, how to lose and how to win gracefully.

高一英语阅读理解中等难度题查看答案及解析
Until late in the 20th century most Americans spent time with people of different generations. Now middle-aged Americans may not keep in touch with old people until they are old themselves.
That's because we group people by age. We put our three-year-olds together in day-care centers, our 13-year-olds in schools and sport activities, and our 80-year-olds in senior citizen homes. Why?
We live far away from the old for many reasons. Young people sometimes avoid the old to get rid of fears of becoming old and dying. It is much harder to watch someone we love disappear before our eyes. Sometimes it’s got hard that we stay away from the people who need us the most.
Fortunately, some of us have found our way to the old. And we have discovered that they often save the young.
A reporter moved her family into a block filled with old people. At first her children were disappointed. But the reporter made banana bread for the neighbors and had her children send it and visit them. Soon the children had many new friends, with whom they shared food, stories and projects. "My children have never been lonely, "the reporter said.
The young, in turn, save the old. Once I was in a rest home (an organization where old people are cared for) when a visitor showed up with a baby, she was immediately surrounded. People who hadn't gotten out of bed in a week suddenly were ringing for a wheelchair. Even those who had seemed asleep woke up to watch the child. Babies have an astonishing power to comfort and cure.
Grandparents are a special case. They give their grandchildren a feeling of security and continuity. As my husband put it "My grandparents gave me a deep sense that things would turn out right in the end." Grandchildren speak of attention they don't get from worried parents. "My parents were always telling me to hurry up, and my grandparents told me to slow down," one friend said. A teacher told me she can tell which pupils have relationships with grandparents: they are quieter, calmer and more trusting.
59.Now in an American family, people can find that___________.
A.children never live with their parents
B.not all working people live with their parents
C.old people are supported by their grandchildren
D.grandchildren are supported by their grandparents
60.Seeing a baby, the old people got excited because _______.
A.they had never seen a baby before
B.the baby was clever and beautiful
C.the baby brought them the image of life
D.the baby's mother would take care of them
61.Why are some children quieter, calmer and more trusting ?
A.Because they have relationships with their grandparents.
B.Because their worried parents ask them to act like that.
C . Because they have nothing to worry about.
D.Because their teachers ask them to act like that.
62.Which of the following can show the fact that the old often save the young?
A.The old can become friends of the children and the children may not feel lonely.
B.The old get excited when they see a baby.
C.The old can cure the young when they are sick.
D.Babies have an astonishing power to comfort and cure.
