The Sahara Desert, covering most of North Africa, is the largest desert in the world. From north to south the Sahara is between 800 and 1,200 miles and is at least 3,000 miles from east to west. On the west of the Sahara Desert is the Atlantic Ocean and on the east is the Red Sea, and to the north are the Atlas Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. Over 25% of the Sahara Desert is covered by sand and dunes（沙丘）.

The most amazing part of the land is: How did they get all that sand there in the first place? And where did they get it? Actually, it turns out that the area used to be lush（青葱的）with green forests and lakes. But, a climate change caused the whole place to dry up.

Spain is famous for its tomato festival, called La Tomatina. It happens in a small town Hanoi on the last Wednesday of August every year. Before the tomato fight, there are parades(游行), musical bands, street parties and so on. On the day of the fight, shopkeepers cover their windows and doors in order to keep away from the tomato fight. At the same time, thousands of tourists and local people come to the town square together. Then large trucks(卡车) full of tomatoes arrive. From the back of the large trucks, a great town band start to throw tomatoes at others. Then the crowds fight back, throwing the tomatoes at anything and anyone. Soon the streets are in the sea of red tomato juice.

Everyone is supposed to obey a small number of rules: You must squash(压烂) the tomato before throwing it and you are allowed to throw nothing but tomatoes.

It is usually over in less than half an hour. Everyone then sets off to the river to clear up. Sounds like fun!

The routes

For centuries,the Silk Road was the most important line of communication connecting modern day Xi’an with the Middle East and Europe,today one area in particular is associated most closely with the name of the Silk Road.This area is Xinjiang in Northwest China,through which two major routes of the Silk Road passed on the northern and southern side of the Taklamakan desert.

The name

The Silk Road was not just the route through which goods were carried.It was also important for the exchange of ideas.Buddhism from India entered China along the Silk Road and had a huge influence on Chinese culture.Greek art styles were popular along the Silk Road and gave Buddhist statues in Northern India classical Western faces.These styles from Northerm India were also found in Xinjiang.

The people

One of China’s famous monks,Xuan Zang,followed the Silk Road in the 6th century to collect Buddhist scriptures from India.Around 600 years later,one of Europe’s famous travellers,MarcoPolo,entered China along the Silk Road.Both Xuan Zang and Marco Polo left detailed records of their journeys along the Silk Road.
