Dear Expert: I was asked to retrieve my 14-year-old daughter from a five-day camping trip. She was suffering from such severe separation anxiety, her teacher thought she should go home. She hadn’t eaten anything and had refused to participate in any activities. The thing is my daughter is extremely bright and has many friends;she organized a few friends into a band, and it belongs to several school clubs. She’s just always had an extreme fear of being away from home.I don’t want her to miss out on other trips. Yours truly, Jonathan |
Dear Jonathan: Sometimes kids can push through homesickness, but in other instances they become hurt mentally and develop greater anxiety around outings, which can worsen and prolong(延长) the problem.Separation anxiety can be the result of many complex interactions some genetic(遗传的) and some learned. People with high anxiety tend to be fearful and worried, ever when the sense of threat is minimum(最低程度).Lots of talented, creative and successful people are exceedingly anxious. I believe your daughter is bright, active and popular, but simply can’t do well outside her home base.My suggestion is to take things in small steps,so your daughter can experience success, and always have a fallback(退却) plan if she needs it.For instance, she can plan an overnight with a friend, but assure her it’s no big deal to pick her up at midnight if she changes her mind. What’s important is to recognize the fear, and make plans to deal with whatever may cause distress. In other words, don’t try to talk your daughter out of her fears, equip her to master them. This way she’ll eventually gain the confidence to go on further trips. It all began with a stop at a red light.
Kevin Salwen was driving his 14-year-old daughter,Hannah, back from a sleepover in 2006.While waiting at a traffic light, they saw a black Mercedes Coupe on one side and a homeless man begging for food on the other.
"Dad,if that man had a less nice car, that man there could have a meal," Hannah protested. The light changed and they drove on,but Hannah was too young to be reasonable. She pestered(纠缠)her parents about inequity, insisting that she wanted to do something.
"What do you want to do?" her mom responded. "Sell our house?"
Warning!Never suggest a grand gesture to an idealistic teenager.Hannah seized upon the idea of selling the luxurious family home and donating half the proceeds(收入)to charity, while using the other half to buy a more modest replacement home.
Eventually, that's what the family did.The project—crazy, impetuous(鲁莽的)and absolutely inspiring—is written down in detail in a book by father and daughter scheduled to be published next month: The Power of Half. It's a book that, frankly,I'd be nervous about leaving around where my own teenage kids might find it.An impressionable child reads this, and the next thing you know your whole family is out on the street.
At a time of enormous needs in Haiti and elsewhere, when so many Americans are trying to help Haitians by sending everything from text messages to shoes, the Salwens offer an example of a family that came together to make a difference—for themselves as much as the people they were trying to help.In a column a week ago,it described neurological(神经生物学的)evidence from brain scans that unselfishness lights up parts of the brain normally associated with more primary satisfaction. The Salwens' experience confirms the selfish pleasures of selflessness.
Mr.Salwen and his wife,Joan, had always assumed that their kids would be better bigger house. But after they downsized, there was much less space to retreat to,so the family members spent more time around each other.A smaller house unexpectedly turned out to be a more family-friendly house.

I took my 9-year-old daughter, Suzan and 5-year-old son, Robbie to the shopping centre. As we got there,we saw a big sign that said, “Petting Zoo”. The kids jumped up and asked, “Daddy, can we go?”
Both my wife and I were out of work. However, I said, “Sure”, giving them a quarter each. They went away, leaving only fifty cents left in my pocket.
A petting zoo is made up of a hundred of little baby animals of all kinds. Kids pay their money and stay in the enclosure(围场)pleased with the little animals while their parents shop.
A few minutes later, I saw Suzan walking along behind me, I was surprised and asked what was wrong.
She said sadly, “Well, Daddy, a ticket for Petting Zoo costs fifty cents. So I gave Robbie my quarter.” Then she said the most beautiful thing I ever heard. She repeated the family motto(座右铭), which is “Love is Action!”
I knew clearly no one loves little animals more than Suzan. She had watched both my wife and me do and say "Love is Action!” for years, and now she had put it into her lifestyle. It had become part of her, because she knew the whole family motto. It’s not only “Love is Action”; it’s “Love is SACRIFICAL(牺牲的) Action!” Love always pays a price...
I was moved. We went back to the Petting Zoo. Suzan stood with her hands and chin(下巴)resting on the fence and just watched Robbie go crazy petting and feeding the animals. I had fifty cents burning a hole in my pocket. I put my hand into my pocket and took out the money. Sure, I must do that!

My boss’s daughter was studying in the Philippines. He asked me if my husband and I could take care of her. He thought his daughter would be able to improve her English communication skills in this way.
After days of thinking, we agreed. He then brought her here and left after 3 days. I thought that my boss’s daughter was well-mannered, but that was wrong.
After a month of staying in the Philippines, she started to show her true colors. When my husband asked her what she wanted for breakfast, she answered him in a rude way. From then on, we experienced fights at home. There was a time when we didn’t talk to her for a week as a punishment of not being good to us. What I hated most was that she didn’t care about other people’s feelings. She ate ahead of us when we were still working and didn’t leave anything for us. So we had to separate her food from ours to avoid such a problem.
The worst thing about her was that she shouted at us. I was wondering if she did this to her parents. We told this to her parents, but unfortunately I didn’t think that solved the problem. This situation lasted for almost 8 months. Our patience was tested during that time.
We tried to teach her everything we could to make her a better person, but I guess 8 months may not to be enough. We even tried to understand her and adjust for her, but it didn’t work. I just hope that she learned something from us and from other Filipinos.
