American nutrition expert Professor Barry Popkin says that the number of overweight people in the world is now bigger than the number of people who don’t have enough to eat. A billion people worldwide now weigh too much and the number of obese people is now more than 300 million. “Obese” means at least 15 kilos heavier than you should be. However, there are also 800 million people in the world who don’t have enough to eat.
Professor Popkin says that the number of hungry people is falling slowly but the number of overweight people is rising fast. The main reasons for this are:
● People are doing less hard physical work
● More people worldwide now eat too much fatty food
● Too many people are driving cars instead of walking
● People spend too much time in front of a television
The United States has the highest rate of obesity in the developed world and Japan has the lowest. Professor Benjamin Senauer is absolutely certain of the reasons for this.
“Japanese people are fit. They use public transport and walk,” he said. “The average American drives to work and drives to supermarket. When he gets home, he sits on a couch in front of the TV and eats junk food.”
In Britain and many other European countries, there are three times as many obese people as there were 20 years ago. About two thirds of British adults are overweight or obese. “The effects of this are clear,” said London doctor Elena Power. “We have more illnesses related to weight and fewer fit people.
China used to be one of the slimmest nations in the world. However, Professor Wu Yangfeng from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Beijing recently estimated (估计)that 20 percent of the world’s overweight people live in China. The Chinese government is especially worried about the increase in obesity among schoolchildren.
“We have a serious problem,” said Professor Wu. “It requires an improvement from everyone, or it will get worse.
1. How many people weigh too much in the world now?
A. A billion. B. 20 billion.
C. 300 million. D. 800 million.
2. Professor Popkin probably agrees that_______.
A. walking to work helps people keep fit.
B. watching TV makes people put on weight
C. eating food without fat helps people keep fit
D. working in offices makes people put on weight
3. Which of the following is Not True according to the passage ?
A. Being overweight can cause more illnesses.
B. About two thirds of British people are overweight.
C. More and more schoolchildren are overweight in China.
D. Most Japanese people are healthier than those in other countries.
4. What does the writer try to tell us in the passage?
A. The importance of losing weight.
B. How people keep fit all over the world.
C. How many countries have health problem.
D. The number of overweight people is growing.

Children know that summer is probably the most fun of all seasons. However, experts say it is also the most dangerous, especially, for children aged 14 and under. In its first study of children’s safety in the US, the National Safe Kids Campaign(NSKC) founds that nearly half of the injury-related(与受伤相关的) deaths among children happened in summer.
Experts are not surprised by the study’s results. They always know summer is a dangerous season for children. During the summer, children are out of the school and spend more time outdoors. They are more likely to get into an accident or be injured. “While we encourage children to be active and spend more time outdoors, they need to understand the importance of safety,” said Everett Koop, an expert of the NSKC.
To help children say safe, the NSKC started a “Make it a Safe Kids Summer” campaign during National Safe Kids Week, from May 5 through May 12. Here are some important summer safety tips from the NSKC:
●Always wear your seat belt.
●Make sure there is an adult around when you decide to go swimming.
●Wear a life jacket when on a boat or doing water sports.
●Obey all traffic rules.
1.Why is summer the most dangerous season of the year in the US?
2.How long did the “Make it a Safe Kids Summer” Campaign last?
3.How many summer safety tips does the NSKC provide?
4.Must the children understand the importance of safety?

Are “Basics”Enough for Students?
An American education expert says many schools are spending too much time teaching the ―basics‖ – reading, math and writing. That might be different from what educators have been saying in America. But U.S. Education Secretary John King says children really need a well-rounded(全面的)education that includes music and the arts.
King spoke about his own education when explaining why schools need to teach more than math, reading and writing. His parents died when he was young. He said things in his house were frightening. It was his teacher in Grades Four, Five and Six – Mr. Osterweil – who helped him escape from his difficult life at home. Each day in Mr. Osterweil’s class, students would read a newspaper. The teacher took him and his classmates to the theater, the zoos and famous museums.
“Those were powerful, life-changing experiences,‖ King says. After he graduated from Harvard University, he took charge of New York State public schools from 2011-2015. ―I’m alive today, I’m doing the work that I do today because I had Mr. Osterweil during that period of my life,‖ King says. ―Students need to connect their studies to things that matter to them, such as music, if they want to become a thinker.‖
A 2013 report by UNESCO(联合国教科文组织), says world needs people to be able to solve new and unusual problems now. It says arts can help students find those answers. In the report, UNESCO says teaching the arts in China, South Korea and Japan is different from that in many western countries. ―The educators in those three countries pay more attention on joyful experiences and children’s interests,‖ the report says. ―In the West, educators are more likely to connect the arts to reading, writing and math.”
Comparing countries is hard because they have different ways to define success. For example some people may think getting high marks in exams is success, while others may hold different views. A 2014 survey by the Program for International Student Assessment tried to compare how well countries teach children how to solve problems. It found Singapore, South Korea, Japan, and China with the highest scores. Singapore was the top one with a score of 562 out of 1,000. The average(平均的) score was 500. The United States had a score of 508, one point behind Germany.
So it may be worth rethinking what we should focus on in our class. The ―basics‖ is not the only part of education.
1. We can learn from the passage that __________.
A. King’s family life was warm and happy
B. King’s teacher focused on ―basics‖ more
C. educators in the West teach music for joy
D. arts can help students solvenew problems
2. The word “define” in Paragraph 6 probably means―_________”
A. get the pleasure of B. make full use of
C. give the meaning of D. take the place of
3. The writer probably agrees that______.
A. students need more than “basics”to learn
B. getting high marks in exams is success
C.education depends a lot on the hobbies
D. we need more time to learn “basics”

Experts say that students usually need eight to ten hours' sleep at night, but most Chinese students do not get enough sleep. Some Chinese parents are usually glad to see their children study late. They will think their children work very hard. But not all parents are happy about this. Once a mother told us that every morning her 10-year-old boy put up one finger with his eyes still closed, begging for one more minute to sleep. Like thousands of students " early birds " in China, he has to get up before six every morning.
