Dear Victor,
I have received your loving letter from school and I am glad to know that you are becoming responsible(有责任的) enough to decide on your career(职业).
You are now in the final year of high school and are going to start further education in college. You know that we belong to different times, and my social life is different from yours. However, all I can say as advice is that you must choose a career wisely. The first consideration is your interest. You can only succeed and feel happy when you do something you enjoy. You must get a job which not only provides you with something useful, but also you are pleased with. Then, you must read a lot in the field(领域) you are aiming at. Also, you should get to know the men and women who work in that field. When mind and heart work together, success is inevitable.
No career is more or less important. I think your interest may be in the field of making TV programs. Your good communication skills, your taking an active part in school plays and the prizes you have won in speech competitions all lead you to that direction. So a career in Mass Communication and TV film production will bring luck to you. If you succeed in that field, you will become famous and rich.
Think a thousand times before making any final decision about your career. After all, we want you to be a man of success.
We all know that you are old enough to think for yourself.
With all the best wishes! Your loving father

Dear Grandma,
How are you? I hope you are feeling well and your leg is improving. Can you walk a bit now? Is your neighbor, Mrs. Lu, bringing you enough books to read? I hope so. You'd love our school library, Grandma. There are so many books on all kinds of subjects. The other day I found a book about engineering. I couldn't really understand it but I hope to learn more about this topic sometime. This term I have some new subject classes, so I think I'll tell you about them.
I study biology. It is a very interesting subject. I'm learning all about the human body, where everything is and what it does. Did you know that we have a kissing muscle? It's called “orbicularis” and it's a circle muscle that closes your mouth and moves your lips forward. I love biology. It's so interesting! Another new subject is religion(宗教). I didn't think I would like this one, but actually it is very interesting to hear how different people worship(崇拜). We are learning about lots of religions from all over the world, not only Asia. My other new subject is Spanish. It's really difficult to learn a new language but I know it will be useful for me in the future, if I want to travel around the world.
Spanish is one of the official languages of the European Union and the United Nations. I've learnt that Spanish is not only spoken in Europe but in South America too. Countries like Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Mexico also speak Spanish. You know I've always wanted to go to Mexico, so if I can speak Spanish, it would be really useful.
Did you study these subjects when you were at school? I suppose subject choice changes over time, doesn't it? I'll come to visit you again in the next holiday, which I think is in eight weeks' time. I'll bring you some of my new books if you like. I hope you can write back soon and tell me all the village news. I miss you very much.
Lots of love,
Sara

A Letter from Antioche
Saturday, May 23, AD 526
Dear Father
I write to tell you the shocking news that has happened since you left here last month. On Wednesday, Antioch had a terrible earthquake. Mother and I are safe, and our house is damaged but still standing. However, over 220,000 people in the city have died, and officials expect even higher numbers as the survivors search everywhere for their loved ones. Hundreds are fleeing the city, carrying their few undamaged things on their backs.…
Many of the churches, markets, theaters, and buildings were in bad shapes. All the city was in a mess. Fallen trees, broken windows and rubbish everywhere. One of the saddest losses was theGreat Church. Although it survived the aftershocks, it caught fire yesterday and burned.
Thieves have hit some people who are fleeing the city. But all hope is not lost. Just this morning, brave people saved a young woman and her child from a broken house. As I write, volunteers are getting back many of our pieces of fine mosaic art. They are putting them into boats to take them to other places. And Emperor Justin sent a message this morning, He has promised to help us rebuild.
I wish you a safe journey.
Your son,
Simeon

Dear Estelle, Saturday, 5th June
I hope you' re well and not working too hard! I' ve been revising for my exams now for the last two weeks. That' s why I haven' t written for such a long time.
Since the beginning of this year we' ve been doing a project called ' World Class'. Have you heard of it.'? Not everyone in the class could take part, but luckily I could. The school chooses a 'twin school' (姊妹学校) in a different area of the world. Our head teacher chose a school in Uganda. They gave us someone to write to from that school. For three months, I've written to a girl called Louisa, who is the same age as me.
It' s been more interesting to hear about her life. She' s told me all about her school and described her daily (日常的) life. I can' t believe that her School doesn' t. have any electricity. She goes to 'school from eight o' clock in the morning until six. O’clock. in the evening. I can' t believe how lucky we are here! She' s also told me that she often can' t go to school because she has to look after her baby brother and sister. She’s tried to teach me some of her language and it' s really difficult.
I love it because it' s the first time I' ve thought about what life must be like somewhere else. I can' t believe people miss classes here when everything is so easy for us. I think more people should help out with projects like this. At the weekend we' re going to have a sports day to help raise money to send to the school. Perhaps one day I'll be able to go to Uganda and meet Louisa myself--who knows?
Lots of 1ove,

Dear mum and dad,
I’m writing this letter to you from the center of Australia. At the moment we’re staying near Uluru—that’s the aboriginal(土著) name for Ayers Rock. On the first day, we took a balloon tour over the rock, and I was surprised at how big it was: 3.6 kilometers long and 384 meters high. The colors of the rock are fantastic, and at different times of the day, they change from purple to red. The Aborigines are the first people of Australia, and the ancient aboriginal stories describe the spirits that created the world. Uluru is a center of Aboriginal culture.
The Australians have many British relatives. That’s why they’re like us in many ways. Their family life is similar to ours, and they enjoy the same food and hobbies. The food and drink that most Australians like are grapes, lamb, ham and especially wine that they make in the south of the country. They love all sports, but football is the most popular. Most Australians live near the coast, so they also love going to the beach, swimming and surfing.
Although it’s December, it’s summer over here. The sunshine is very bright, and near the coast the countryside is very green. There are lots of sheep in the fields and on the hills, but the outback(澳洲内陆) is more like a desert, full of rocks and sand.
The next day after we arrived at Uluru, we went on a camel(骆驼) ride. The camel that I rode had a bad temper. When I sat on its back, it became very angry and refused me. So everyone else thought it was very funny that my camel kept lying down…
Finally, later this evening, we’re taking the plane back to Sydney and coming home, it’s been a fantastic trip!
Tony
