John once came home lately after work, his wife said to him that he had waited for two hours. She was too angry that she gave him a push, which made him fall down the stairs so he is old and weak. When Steven, one of John’s neighbor, heard the noise, he was eager to know which was happening. He came John’s front door and knocked. “What’s happened?” he asked. “My coat fell down the stairs,” John answered. When he was a little boy, his uncle called him "Sparky' after a comic-strip (连环画) horse named Spark Plug. School was all but impossible for Sparky. He failed every subject in the eighth grade. And while he did manage to make the school's golf team, he lost the only match of the season straight away.
Throughout his youth, Sparky was awkward socially. It wasn't that the other students dislike him. It's just that no one really cared that much. In fact, Sparky was astonished if a classmate ever said hello to him outside of school hours. Sparky was a loser. Him, his classmates ... everyone knew it. So he learned to live with it. He made up his mind early that if things were meant to work out, they would.
One thing was important to Sparky, however-drawing. He was proud of his artwork. No one else appreciated it. But that didn't seem to matter to him. In his senior year of high school, he sent some cartoons to the yearbook. The editors rejected his ideas. Despite that, Sparky was convinced of his ability.
He even decided to become an artist. So, after completing high school, Sparky wrote to Walt Disney Studios. They asked for samples of his artwork. In spite of careful preparation, it too was rejected. One more confirmation was that he was a loser.
But Sparky still didn't give up. Instead, he decided to tell his own life story in cartoons. The main character would be a little boy who symbolized the boy who always lost and underachieved. You know him well because Sparky's cartoon character went on to become a kind of cultural phenomenon. People readily understand this "loveable loser". He reminded people of the painful and embarrassing moments from their own past, of their pain and shared humanity. The character soon became famous worldwide: "Charlie Brown". And Sparky, the boy whose many failures kept him from trying, whose work was rejected again and again, is the highly successful cartoonist Charles Schultz. His cartoon strip Peanuts continues to inspire books, T-shirts and Christmas specials, reminding us, as someone once commented, that life somehow finds a way for all of us, even the losers.

2.Before Sparky started the Charlie Brown cartoon,_________.

A.people were touched by Sparky's never-give-up spirit

4.We can learn from the passage that_________.

Each Indian(印第安人)was supposed to keep his birth name until he was old enough to earn one for himself. But his playmates(游戏伙伴)would always give him a name of their own.No matter what his parents called him, his childhood friends would use the name they had chosen.Often it was not pleasing, such as Bow Legs or Bad Boy.But sometimes a name fit so well that the youngster found it difficult to shake it off.If he could not earn a better one from a war later, he could be stuck with a name like Bow Legs for the rest of his life.
The Indian earned his real name when he was old enough for his first fight against the enemy. His life name depended on how he acted during this first battle. When he returned from the war, the whole tribe would gather and observe the ceremony in which he would be given his name by the chief. If he had done well, he would get a good name.Otherwise he might be called Crazy Wolf or Man-Afraid-Of-a-Horse.So an Indian’s name told his record or described the kind of man he was.
A man was given many chances to improve his name, however. If in a later battle he was brave in fighting against the enemy, he was given a better name. Some of our great fighters had as many as twelve names—all good and each better than the last.
An Indian’s names belonged to him for the rest of his life.No one else could use them.Even he himself could not give them away because names were assigned by the tribe, not the family. So no man could pass on his name unless the chief and the tribe asked him to do so.
Sometimes an Indian would be asked to give his name to a son who had performed a noticeable deed.I know of only three of four times when this happened. It is the rarest honor for a person—the honor of assuming(承担) his father’s name.
1.An Indian could be given the second name by__________.
A.his father B.the enemy
C.the chief of the tribe D.his childhood friends
2.The greatest honor an Indian could earn was____________.
A.a victory in his first battle against the enemy
B.a name given by the chief
C.a ceremony to get his real name
D.the right to use his father’s name
3.If an Indian had more than ten names, it meant that____________.
A.many people in the tribe liked him B.he was a great fighter
C.he had a lot of friends D.he had fought in fewer than ten battles
4.Which of the following statements is not true according to the passage?
A.The names given by the playmates of an Indian were usually not pleasant
B.The life name of an Indian was earned in battle
C.An Indian could throw away his birth name when he was old enough to earn one for himself.
D.The Indians themselves were not allowed to give their names away.
