There is little rain in desert. Because deserts are so dry, they have no “quilt” to help stop the soil from going away. As a result, they may get very hot during the day with the sun shining, but don’t hold the heat overnight. Many deserts can quickly get cold once the sun goes down. Some deserts can reach temperatures of over 100 degrees F during the day and then drop below freezing (32 degrees F) during the night.
The largest hot and dry desert in the world is the Sahara Desert in Northern Africa. The Sahara is a sandy desert with great sand hills. It covers over 3 million square miles of Africa. Other large deserts include the Arabian Desert in the Middle East, the Gobi Desert in Northern China and Mongolia, and Kalahari Desert in Africa.
Animals that live in the desert are also used to needing little water. Many get all the water they need from the food they eat. Other animals keep water that they can use later. The camel stores up fat in its hump while other animals keep something they need in their tails.
Only certain types of plants can live in the terrible environment of the desert. You won’t see a lot of tall trees in the desert. Most plants have a way to keep water in their leaves, or trunks so they can live a long time without water.
Now deserts cover around 20% of the world’s land, but they are growing. This is called desertification and is caused by different reasons including human activities. The Sahara Desert is growing larger and larger each year. What should we do with it ?
1.How is the weather during the night in the desert?
A. Hot. B. Cold. C. Cool.
2.Where does the camel store up fat?
A. In its hump. B. In its stomach. C. In its tail
3.Why won't we see a lot of tall trees in the desert?
A. Because of few people there.
B. Because of the sun shining.
C. Because of the terrible environment
4.How much of the land do deserts cover in the world?
A. One fifth. B. Less than 10%. C. Two fifths
5.Is the Sahara Desert growing or not?
A. Nobody knows it.
B. It's growing.
C. It's not growing.

Now many young people are traveling around the world on their own not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.
Kristina Wegscheider from California first traveled alone when she was at college and believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their life. “It opens up your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone.” Wegscheider has visited 46 countries covering all seven continents.
In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen, it is challenging. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.
Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go traveling last year. He set up a website, The Aussie Nomad, to document his adventures. He says he wished he had traveled alone earlier.“ The people you meet, the places you visit, or the things you do, everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person,” said the 30-year-old man.
Richardson describes traveling alone like “a shot in the arm”, which “makes you a more confident person that is ready to deal with anything.” He said, “The feeling of having conquered something on my own is a major part of what drives me each day when I’m dealing with a difficult task.” “I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside that nothing is impossible if you try.”
The great 19th century explorer John Muir once said, “Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness.”
1.Which of the following will Kristina Wegscheider agree with?
A. Traveling alone is a necessary experience for everyone.
B. It is more meaningful to travel in foreign countries.
C. It is comfortable to travel around without a friend.
D. Traveling abroad helps people to find new things.
2.Traveling alone is challenging because________________ .
A. you have to make things on your own
B. it is hard for you to prove yourself to others
C. you can only depend on yourself whatever happens
D. it will finally build your character
3.What can we infer about Chris Richardson?
A. He started traveling alone at an early age.
B. He was once shot in the arm.
C. He used to work as a salesman.
D. His website encourages others a lot.
4.What is the best title for the passage?

Have you ever heard of spirit bears? They are endangered members of the black bear family. One in ten black bears is actually born with a spirit bear.
Clover, a three-year-old spirit bear, lives at B.C. Wildlife Park near Kamloops, British Columbias, Canada. He lost his parents two years ago and was raised at a wildlife center. When he was set free into the wild, he went into human camps looking for food. Wildlife experts tried to get him used to living on his own, but he continued to look for places where there were people. Finally the experts decided that he could not live in the wild. Since then, a total of $750000 has been collected to create a habitat for Clover.
The habitat covers about three acres(英亩) of land and includes natural forest, two ponds connected by a small river and something else. It will add a platform(站台) and a walkway later this year so that people can see Clover and his habitat more closely. There will also be a center where people can learn more about spirit bears. Besides, a black bear will be moved into the habitat so Clover will not feel lonely.
Spirit bears are also called Kermode bears after Francis Kermode, who first studied them. Kermode discovered that a small number of black bears carry a gene for the white fur. If a baby bear receive one of these genes from each parent, its fur will be a creamy white color.
There are about 1200 bears who carry the gene for white fur, but only about 200 white spirit bears in the world. Kermode bears are found only in British Columbia.
