Don’t say: “Gee! It was only a cat!” or “My roommate doesn’t like her dog and she is getting rid of her dog. Do you want it?” Do say: “I’m sorry, she was such a great cat. How long did you have it?”

When a friend is sad about the loss of a loved one, it’s easy to feel helpless. Sometimes we think we’re doing the right thing by trying to cheer them up, or letting them know that they should try to move on. 1. So here are some ways to help you support your friend in time of need.
1. Recognize the stages of sadness.
Most people suffering a loss will go through these stages, often in no particular order: denial (拒绝), bargaining, anger, depression and acceptance. 2. The more familiar you are with these stages, the better you’ll be to support your friend.
2. 3.
We are often ready to praise the person who appears to be dealing strongly with a loss. The problem is that we need to allow them to be human and vulnerable (脆弱的) sometimes too. After all, there’s strength in letting out your feelings from time to time.
3. Ask them what they need.
It’s normal to feel you can guess what your friend needs. Because we’re all different, it is best to ask them what it is that you can do for them. If they say “I don’t know” or “nothing”, don’t walk away or worry. 4. And let them know that you will be there when they think of something.
Finally, keep in mind that loss is not just felt through death. It can be the loss of a job, the loss of hope or expectation and so much more. 5. And your role as a supporter is very important and helpful.
A. Be the person who follows up.
B. Each one is healthy and necessary.
C. Loss is a difficult thing to work through.
D. Don’t always tell them how strong they are.
E. Just offer your support in whatever way you can.
F. Your caring will be appreciated and provide much comfort.
G. But those efforts often put pressure on them and leave them feeling useless.

Many people tend to complain about not having good friends in their lives. Sadly, they seem to think that their own company is not enough to make them happy. Nothing could be further from the truth though. In order to get along with others, the first thing you need to do is learn to get along with yourself. Only in this way will you succeed in developing healthy, solid relationships with others. How to develop?
Listen to your inner voice. Remember that inner voice that keeps whispering to you what you really want and need as well as what you do not really want and need. It is about time you started listening to it. In order to get to know yourself in depth, it is important to learn and accept what you want and what you do not want.
Learn to enjoy your own company. You will be surprised to find out how many things you can do by yourself and actually have fun in the process. Reading romantic novels, poetry or science fiction is only a few of the things that you can do by yourself, which can not only offer you hours of enjoyment, but also the chance to get to know yourself better.
Satisfy yourself. Pay special attention to your personal hygiene(卫生).Do your hair and nails often and experiment with new styles. Follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly to stay in good shape. No matter how busy your daily schedule is, always find at least an hour per day for yourself, when you can either relax doing absolutely nothing, or doing something that you enjoy.
Learn to respect your own boundaries. Find out what your boundaries are and learn to respect them. You are the only one who knows what you can and what you cannot accept;no one else can point that out to you, or force you to compromise(妥协).

What do you usually do to comfort your friends when they are sad? You probably pat them on the shoulder, or give them a warm hug.
We used to think that knowing when and how to comfort others was an ability that only humans have. But scientists have discovered that apes (猩猩) have this ability too.
Two researchers from Emory University in Atlanta, US, went to an Ape Protection Centre in Congo to study bonobos (倭黑猩猩), which are closely related to humans.
The researchers analyzed the bonobos’ reactions (反应) after more than 370 cases of stressful situations, such as fights and losing temper, and found that some bonobos rushed to hug those that were screaming after being attacked, just like humans would have done.
However, researchers found that not all bonobos were able to comfort others. In the protection center, many bonobos are orphans whose mothers were killed by hunters. They were found to be more worried in times of tension and have greater difficulty controlling their own emotions, making them worse at reaching out to help friends in need.
“Orphans, who have not had the benefit of a mother helping them handling their emotions, are much worse at comforting others,” Professor Frans de Waal told The Telegraph. “Bonobos with moms were able to curb their negative emotional reactions more quickly. Therefore, they pay more attention to others.”
This pattern mirrors the way that human children have been found to react. Those who are good at handling their own emotions—for example, those who can calm themselves down more quickly after upsetting experiences—are usually better at expressing their concerns for others.

4.What’s the main purpose of this passage?

C. To uncover the mystery of Apes.
