My interest in Chinese food started many years ago, when I had my first job. I was a young reporter for the Daily Journal in San Francisco. Our office wasn’t far from Chinatown. I usually managed to arrange my time so that I could go there at least two or three times a week for a good meal.
When I ever ate Chinese food the first time, I loved it. And since then, it just tastes better and better to me. The first thing I noticed was the fresh tastes of the meat and vegetables. When I learned more about the food, I began to understand why it has this special feature.
About 5000 years ago, China lost much of its wood because of over population and poor management of its forest. This loss was very bad for the country, of course, but it turned out to be very good for the food. Wood became very expensive and hard to get, so the Chinese had to learn how to use it better.
In order to use less wood in cooking, they started to cut their meat and vegetables into small pieces before they put them in the hot oil. That way, the food cooked faster and they saved their fuel. The food prepared in this manner kept its fresh flavor(风味)—and it’s this flavor that attracts people to the art of Chinese cooking.
I often wonder if the Chinese appreciated their solution to that ancient energy problem as much as I do now –whenever I eat Chinese food.

Six years ago, my interest in football started when I watched the 2006 World Cup. 1. In fact, football has influenced me in many ways and I have benefited ( 受益 ) a lot from it.
First, 2. Through talking about football, I have known many people with the same interest as mine. We often exchange opinions with each other in our spare time and have fun.
Second, 3. For instance, I am a football fan of AC Milan. My passion for Milan has stimulated(刺激) me to learn Italian by myself because I wanted to learn morn about that special Italian club. And most football games I have watched are aired in English, so I have the chance to practice my English listening comprehension and to learn more English words about sports.
Third, 4. I remember Bai Yansong once says in his book that playing a football match is just like going through an act of life. I quite agree with him. In a football match, at first you are perhaps in a leading position, but if you don't keep working hard enough, your opponents may take advantage of your carelessness to win the match. Also in a football match, even you are left behind by a score of, say, 0--3 and you have limited match time left, you still have a chance and hope to win as long as you play really hard. I think it is the same in our real life.
In a word, 5. I will go on living football and supporting my Milan.
A. Football has been an excitement for me to learn more knowledge, especially foreign languages.
B. Being a football fan gives me a lot of chances to make friends because common interest brings us together.
C. Since then, I have always been crazy for football
D. Football has influenced me much in a positive way.
E. Football has provided me with a deeper understanding of life.

Children should be allowed to get angry. I remember many years ago, when I was visiting my sister in Australia, and I told my oldest son that he wasn’t allowed to do something he really wanted to do. He thought about it for a minute and said, “Mom, I’m very angry with you.” I replied, “That’s OK, darling, it’s what you do with your anger.” I then asked him if he wanted to talk to me about it but he was too angry to talk to me. Then he stormed off(愤然离开).
My sister looked at me surprisingly. Now she has a son the same age as mine and she said angrily, “How can you allow your child to be angry with you? If my son learns that from you, I will never forgive you.”
Then it was hard for me to stay with her, I ended up leaving earlier. Why shouldn’t my son have the right(权利) to tell me when I have made him angry? If he can’t tell me then how can he tell others in his life?
Children need to be able to express how they feel. We need to teach them ways to do this in a right way instead of saying nothing. I want them to tell me. Bottling up anger is not healthy for anyone and usually makes things worse.
1.What should children be allowed to do according to the passage?

C. Drink wine. D. be rude to their parents.
2.How did the writer’s sister feel when she saw the son was angry with his mother?

3.Why did the writer end up leaving earlier when visiting her sister?
A. Because her sister was angry with her and she felt it hard to stay there.
B. Because she had a meeting later.
C. Because her son was angry with her and left.
D. Because her sister asked her to leave.
4.The underlined words “Bottling up” means __________ in Chinese.
A.瓶子 B.装满瓶子
C.强忍着不说 D.打碎瓶子
5.What’s TRUE according to the passage?

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, , I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership--a shop selling cars--was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
"Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?" I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pick-up truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot , he said.
"Thank you"--two powerful words. They're easy to say and mean so much.

I still remember the true story that happened to me many years ago. It started while my family were on vacation. Vacations should be relaxing, but I needed to do some studying. I carefully put all my important papers and books in a large bag.
After a long drive to New York, we found a motel, a place for travelers and their cars, with a really good price, so we decided to stay there for a week. On the second day, after visiting some interesting places and having a big dinner, we returned to the motel. It was about ten o’clock in the evening, and I wanted to study. However, I couldn’t find my paper bag anywhere. I was quite sure that I had put it in the room. Suddenly, I realized the cleaner had taken it out with the rubbish.
I ran over to the main office, and asked if I could talk to the cleaner on duty that day. They told me all the cleaners had left for the day. They showed me where the rubbish bins were instead of offering me any help. I walked out of the motel with a flashlight. I saw three large rubbish bins standing in the dark. I had to look for my bag very carefully. But I didn’t have any luck. I almost wanted to give up. When I took another look into the last bin, I saw my bag right on its top! I was never so happy to see such a dirty old bag in my life!
