The year 2013 was very bad for my life. Due to illness I had to be in hospital for the first time in my life. Everything went wrong in the work. On personal front, my marriage date was fixed but that guy left me just a week before our engagement. I was almost in depression because of whatever all happened to me. I was struggling to come out of this situation as it was a very bad period of my life.
In those days, I met a guy in the office. This guy was much younger to me but still very soon, we became good friends. We had so much in common that we spent a lot of time talking with each other. On my birthday, he offered to share my birthday evening. It was a lovely evening and I felt so nice. He made my birthday so special that I couldn’t help crying. Very soon, our friendship became stronger and finally we fell in love in just a few days. These days it’s very rare that people get love in return. So I found myself so lucky that I experienced equal love in return. It’s always the inner beauty that makes a person beautiful and he made me realize how beautiful I was and brought my confidence back. He not only loved me so much but also helped me in many ways to solve my other problems. I became more and more confident and made great progress in my work.
This man came into my life like an angel when I needed him most. I got thousands of reasons to hate 2013 but just one reason which made 2013 very special was enough to forget all bad memories. I owe so much to him and don’t know if I would ever be able to repay for what he has done for me. I would like to take this opportunity to tell him “THANK YOU SO MUCH, my dear”.
Also, I want to convey one message to everyone. In life we always pass through lots of ups and downs. Sometimes our circumstance becomes even worse, which affects us badly but we should never lose hope. We will always see the sunshine even after the darkest night.
1.How did the author feel about the year 2013 at first?
A. It was lively. B. It was wonderful.
C. It was important. D. It was unpleasant.
2.The second paragraph is developed mainly .
A. by giving examples B. by showing the reason

3.What does the author want to tell the readers through the last paragraph?
A. No sweat, no sweet. B. Grasp all, lose all.
C. Never lose hope in difficulties. D. Love me, love my dog.
4.What’s the purpose of the author in writing the passage?
A. To tell us about her experiences in 2013.
B. To show us how to stick to our aims.
C. To share her ways of keeping healthy with us.
D. To show us how to help ourselves in difficulties.

When I was 12 years old, I was at a very hard stage in life. I was short and fat, which was bad for a girl, so coordination(协调)was not one of my strongest features. On the other hand, my mother was a very talented
softball player who even acted as my coach. Night after night, I would try my best to impress “my coach”.Unfortunately, I just felt like a terrible disappointment to my mother.
One summer afternoon, my mother told us we were going to visit Uncle David. Since we lived in an apartment, going to the country was quite a treat. My uncle David always had a way of making me feel special.
When we arrived, my uncle and cousin Jeff were throwing metal rings at two holes in the ground. I was curious about what they were doing so I went over to watch. Noticing that I was standing there, my uncle asked if I had ever played washers.
Being a “city girl”, my reply was that the only “washers” I knew were the ones that cleaned clothes. To my embarrassment, Uncle David, chuckling(咯咯笑),explained that the metal rings were called washers. I was shocked to hear my uncle saying he wanted me to take his place. He then gave me the washers and gave tips on how to throw better.
Unwillingly, I joined Jeff. Gradually, I found myself not only enjoying but also wanting to win this game. The washer went into the air and began to fall. Then a cloud of dust appeared as the washer sank into the hole. My first try! I had actually thrown the washer into the hole!
Although 23 summers have gone by since that day, this small success in washer playing helped me get back self confidence lost when I struggled with the game of softball.

My first visit to Angkor Wat was in 1980. The country had been at war for many years and the temple was deserted and falling to pieces. Plants were growing out of the roofs, and trees were growing in the courtyards.
Today, the temple is the scene of a busy repair programme. A team of 15 Indian experts are organizing a workforce of 400 Cambodians, most of them women, who are cleaning, repairing and rebuilding parts of this temple.
As I walked through the courtyards, I noticed the Cambodian women devote hours to cleaning carefully a tiny area of stone. Boards are laid down to protect the precious painted stones while the repair work is going on. There are very few machines and little heavy equipment. Workers carry building materials in buckets at the end of long poles. Piles of stones lie in a corner of the courtyard, waiting to be replaced.
The work of cleaning the stones is watched over by three Indian chemists. It is a very slow task. First they clean the stones with brushes using buckets of a weak chemical. Then gaps between the stones are filled in. Finally another material is painted onto the stones which will protect them from water forever.
Work starts every day at 7 a. m. and goes on until late afternoon six days a week, with a break at midday.
Evening is the best time to visit the temple, after the tour groups have left. As the sun sinks lower, shadows spread across the courtyard. After sunset, the sky turns pink. The grey stone towers take on a golden colour before turning pink. Nowhere else in the world can there be such a quiet, beautiful place.

A. the poor look of the temple Angkor Wat in 1980.

B. the temple was built on desert and nobody noticed it
C. the temple was very old with a long history
D. the temple was repaired by the Cambodians, most of whom women
4.To clean the stone, how many steps should be followed?

When I was twenty years old, my grandmother invited me to Europe for two weeks. I had never been to foreign countries before, so I was especially excited about the trip. When I told one of my professors about the trip, he suggested, “Keep a journal(日记).” More than ten years later, I am so thankful for his suggestion, as I can look back on this first trip to Europe through my journal.
Keeping a travel journal is very simple. Bring a journal with you during your vacation and write down the things that interest you. Interestingly, what appeals to you may not be the tourist attractions but some small things, such as something in your hotel room, and a talk you hear by chance. Your journal is the best thing you can bring back from a vacation.
It is a great idea to choose a good journal style that you like. Whether it is lined or unlined paper, pick up a journal that feels good in your hands. The size of your journal is also important. Some people feel that a travel journal should be small and easy to carry, while others prefer a larger-sized journal. My journal has always been about 8×11 inches. I haven’t found any real problems with carrying it. It fits well into a backpack. A good tip is to get some type of waterproof(防水的)cover for your journal. You never know when something in your bag may leak(渗漏), or it may start to rain, which can just ruin your journal.
In addition, consider carrying some plastic bags to bring back some pictures and postcards so that you can put them in your journal. You will probably find some things during the day that you want to attach to your journal at night in your hotel.
Always carry something to write with when you have your journal. Consider carrying a variety of pens, markers, or pencils so as to make your journal look more beautiful. Even if you are not very good at drawing, a journal has a way of freeing your creative juices. You will find yourself quickly drawing things or writing poems at the sides of the pages in your journal.
Tourist maps are also a wonderful thing to consider adding to your journal because they show where you have been. You can add parts of the map to show where you have been that day and then another part on another day to show where you have been the following day.
Bring a tube of glue to stick postcards and pictures to your journal. You can cut the pictures and postcards into the shapes you like so that you can make your journal look more beautiful. Keep these things handy in a plastic bag so that you can find them easily.
There are so many things you can consider writing in your journal, such as the sights you have seen that day, a meal you have had, a person you have seen in a museum, a cafe that has caught your attention, your feelings about your trip or about the hotel you have stayed in, and a list of the things you also wish to do during your vacation. These are all the small details that do make up your trip.

The first time I saw Carlos I would never have believed he was going to change my life. I had my arms full of books and I was tearing into the classroom when I ran into something solid. It was Carlos.
“My, you’re tall,” he said.
Of course, the class began to laugh. Angry, I walked to my seat without a word.
I glanced back to see if Reed Harrington was laughing with the rest. That would be the last straw. But Reed was studying chemistry and did not seem to be aware of anything else. I didn’t know why I considered Reed my friend. Maybe just because he was a good two inches taller than I. Anyway, every time I blew out my birthday candles and made a wish, it was for a date with Reed Harrington. “Take that seat,” Mr. McCarthy told the proud newcomer Carlos, pointing to the only empty one, in the back of the room.
Carlos smiled broadly. “But I need a couple of dictionaries.” Again the class laughed, but now they were laughing with Carlos, not at him. He had been here only 10 minutes and already he had them on his side.
It was the school elections that made me think of Carlos again. Reed Harrington was voted president and Carlos vice president. “How come?” I kept asking myself. “How come this shrimp(虾) who’s only been in town for a little over a month gets to be so popular.”
So on that morning, I stopped Carlos and said, “It doesn’t seem to bother you—being short.” He looked up at me. “Of course I mind being short. But there isn’t anything I can do about it. When I realized I was going to have to spend my life in this undersized skin, I just decided to make the best of it and concentrate on being myself.” “You seem to get along great,” I admitted. “But what about me? Nobody wants to date a girl taller than he is.” “The trouble with you is you’re afraid to be yourself. You’re smart. And you could be pretty. In fact, you might be more than pretty.” I felt myself turning red...
