Americans plan parties for many reasons. As in other cultures, many Americans attend parties for weddings and religious or national holidays. But some parties are especially American. For example, a group of neighbors may gather on their street to eat food, play music and visit with one another. This is called a block party. A woman might invite a group of women to a party called a baby shower for a friend who is about to give birth. Guests bring presents for the new baby.
Americans also attend tailgate parties. A tailgate is the back end of a truck or other vehicle that opens down. The tailgate parties are a big part of sports culture in the United States. Friends bring food and drink to a sports event. They eat together in the parking area of the sports stadium.
Birthday parties are also very popular. Many parents organize a party for their child around a theme. Birthday parties usually include gifts and a birthday cake with candles. In many parts of the United States, cupcakes have become a popular replacement for cakes.
Birthday parties can be low cost or very costly. Some parents take their children’s birthday parties very seriously, even when the child is too young to fully understand the celebration.
One group of parents started a website called Birthdays Without Pressure. They decided that some parents were under too much social pressure to plan costly parties for their children. The group sees this movement as an example of America’s culture of “too much stuff”. The group’s website gives suggestions on how to keep birthday celebrations simple, meaningful and fun without spending a lot of money. Their advice may be very helpful during this period of economic recession(萧条).

Other cultures can be different from ours in many aspects! They can cat different foods and live in different types of houses. People probably speak different languages and have beliefs and customs very different from yours. However, they can also be similar in ways of connecting with each other. We sometimes call these means of communication universal languages.
Some legends hold that, thousands of years ago, there was a single language spoken by everyone on Earth. It is fun to think about a time when everyone may have been able to communicate in the same language though historical evidence does not support this, of course.
Today, there are thousands of languages spoken around the world. Yet, there are some means of communication that go beyond words and allow people of wildly different backgrounds to communicate and share emotions and feelings. For example, some people believe music is a universal language. There may be some scientific support for this idea, too. Experts have learned that, across cultures, people can recognize three common emotions in music; happiness, sadness and fear.
So what other types of universal languages might there be? Some people believe dance is a universal language. Along with music, dancing seems to be a common interest shared by peoples all over the world. Do you think you could see a dance from another culture and make some reasonable guesses about the ideas and emotions behind it? We bet you could!
Another universal language that you might not have thought of is math! If you think about it now, though, it just makes sense. The value of pi is roughly 3. 14159 no matter where you are on Earth, likewise, figuring out the value of something involves the same mathematical calculations, regardless of whether you' re counting in dollars, pesos or coconuts.
1.What does the underlined word "this" in paragraph 2 probably refer to?
A. The view that people only used one language.
B. The fact that there used to be many languages.
C. The evidence that proves old languages funny.
D. The doubt that people didn't understand each other.
2.Why is music regarded as a universal language?
A. It can be enjoyed by people from all walks of life.
B. It can be understood more easily than languages.
C. It usually comes from different backgrounds.
D. It helps people to share common feelings.
3.What are the universal languages according to the passage?
A. Math, English and music.
B. Music, dance and math.
C. History, culture and music.
D. Emotion, pi and music.
4.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Various Differences Between Cultures
B. Music Helps People Show Feelings
C. Universal Languages Connect Different Cultures
D. Cross-cultural Communication History

Language and culture are connected to each other in so many ways: language names and explains important events and people. When the Fourth Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792) ordered a lunch (so that he didn’t have to leave the gaming tables) there was no word to refer to the bread-and-butter-encased food that has ever since borne his name. Another example is grog, a drink of rum(朗姆酒)mixed with water. The word was coined from the nickname(绰号)of Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757)—Old Grog. The nickname came from the cloak(披风)of “ grogram ” which he habitually wore, and it provided the word for watered-down rum which he gave to sailors. In Australia it has become the word for alcoholic(含酒精的)drink of any kind. Both sandwich and grog are known throughout the English-speaking world, and have been borrowed into other European languages—sandwich into French, and grog into German.
In Australia some rather more specialised foods go by the names of local heroes and heroines. The lamington owes its name to Charles Wallace Alexander Napier Cochrane-Baillie, Second Baron of Lamington, who was governor of Queensland from 1896 to 1901. He was well-known for his concern for the treatment of local workers in northern Qucensland. Another sweet, Peach Melba, was invented in 1892 or 1893 by the French cook Auguste Escoffier at the Savoy Hotel, London, to respect the Australian singer Nellie Melba.
Some words have their origin in the sports world. The boxer Larry Foley (1849-1917) stopped boxing at the age of 30, having developed a training school for young boxers. His name is probably the one behind the expression “give someone Larry Dooley". Also a sporting hero was the footballer Roy Cazaly (1893-1963), who is the person in “ Up There Cazaly ” , used well beyond football as an expression of encouragement. He became a great footballer by taking amazingly high marks for the St Kilda and South Melbourne clubs.

2.Which of the following is related to an Australian singer?
A.Sandwich. B.Grog.
C.Lamington. D.Peach Melba.
3.What is the possible meaning of "give someone Larry Dooley"?
A.Give up somebody. B.Encourage somebody.
C.Give somebody a beating. D.Teach somebody to fight.
4.What similarity do the words and expressions mentioned in the text share?
A.They are difficult to understand. B.They come from people’s names.
C.They have been used for centuries. D.They are mainly used in Australia.

Every weekend, many Americans drive around looking for things to buy. They are taking part in an unusual kind of outdoor treasure hunt: the yard sale (旧货出售). In some parts of the country, such a sale might be called a garage sale or a moving sale. Whatever the name, the activity is the same. People sell things they no longer want.
The sellers put a paid announcement in a local newspaper. It tells when and where the yard sale will take place. It lists some of the things to be sold. Early in the morning, all the things to be sold are carried out of the house. Then they sit all day waiting for someone to take them home. Usually, the seller puts a price on each object at a yard sale. However, that price can almost always be negotiated (谈判).
Serious buyers also spend time getting ready for yard sales. They collect the newspaper announcements. Then they make lists of the sales they want to attend.
Most people who go to yard sales are not looking for anything special. They might buy an object simply because it costs so little. They enjoy bargaining over prices, even if they may hold their own yard sale to sell all the things they have bought.
To other people, yard sales are simply a way to have fun. In some communities, they are important social gatherings. Other people say yard sales help the environment. Old things are re-used instead of being thrown away.
In any case, yard sales are very popular in America. Hunting for unusual items is a sport for some people. For others, it is a way of life.

D. carrying all the things to be sold out of the house early in the morning

People go fishing for many reasons, for one they like the sport of it, reeling in (搜卷轴拉近鱼钩) the big catch after a long day of work or just having a few drinks on the water with some friends and letting all the stress just go. Whatever the reasons may be, it is absolutely therapeutic.
People in the south sometimes do a strange type of fishing where they reach their arm inside a hole in the bank and pull out cat fish the size of a boat. There is one form called jug fishing where you get a milk jug or water jug and tie a heavy fishing line with a big hook, put on a small brim(容器的口)and throw it in the water. The next morning you get up and see what’s on the hook. There is fly fishing which is with a lighter string and top water jigs(滚钩)such as bugs that lay on the top of the water until the trout(鳟鱼)comes and takes it. It takes longer to reel them in because the line is so light and the fish are heavy.
Ice fishing is a dangerous kind of fishing in the north. You cut a hole in the ice, drop in your bait(诱饵)and wait for a fish to bite. You have to be careful that the fish doesn’t pull your line into the side of the ice and snap it. That is one problem with ice fishing but the fish are usually bigger and worth the trouble.
Going out on the lake with a couple of friends or alone with a couple of drinks and a fishing pole can be the most stress releasing thing you can do sometimes. Just to feel the waves rocking the boat and a good conversation is all the therapy you will need sometimes. Catching a fish is always a great bonus(奖励).

4.What problem should people pay attention to when going ice fishing?
A.Dropping in the bait several times
B.Waiting for the fish more patiently
C.Cutting a big enough hole on the ice
D.Taking care of the lines of their poles
5. Fishing is becoming more and more popular mainly because _______.
A.it is a good way to harvest much fish from the rivers
B.it can help people have a good time with their friends
C.it can help people relax themselves to the fullest
D.it is a good way to exercise the strength of their arms
