Seventeen pre-school kids graduated on Wednesday from a special school program. All of them had cancer.
The kids wore white caps and white gowns (长袍) on graduation day. The ceremony was held at the Morgan Center in Hicksville.
“This is home,” said Fran Hirst, whose son, Bradley, suffered from leukemia (白血病).
Like his classmates, Bradley couldn’t attend regular schools. “He can’t go to school. He can’t go to malls. This is all he has,” said Hirst.
The Morgan Center provides a safe environment for these kids. “We give them friends and experiences and a happy place to go,” said Nancy Zuch.
Zuch and her husband, Rod, started the Morgan Center after their own daughter, Morgan, was diagnosed (诊断) with cancer in 2000.
Now cancer-free, Morgan, 16, handed the new graduates special medals (奖牌).“It’s such an amazing feeling, because I couldn’t have these experiences,” Morgan said.
On graduation day, the difficulties of a long year were replaced by smiles and cheers.
Bradley threw his graduation cap in the air just weeks after three months in the hospital for treatment. His mother said the chance to return to the Morgan Center kept Bradley going.

Mark Zuckerberg was born on May 14, 1984. As a little kid, he loved creating little fun computer programs, especially communication tools and games.
When he was a student at Harvard University, Mark founded (创建)Facebook on February 4, 2004. Through Facebook, Harvard students could communicate with each other. Facebook quickly became a great success at Harvard and more than two-thirds of the school’s students used it in the first two weeks. It soon spread further to any university students, then high school students, and, finally, to anyone aged 13 and over in the US.
Facebook developed fast and became popular. People can communicate with others, add friends, and send them messages. Now, it has more than 175 million users all over the world.
Many big companies have offered a very high price to buy Facebook, but Mark refused them all. His reason was simple. “We are not planning to sell it. We don’t want to make money from it. We just hope Facebook will make it easier for people to know each other.”
Sometimes the simplest ideas go the furthest. We hope Mark can go much further, maybe even further than Bill Gates!
1.What was Mark interested in when he was a little kid?
2.Where was Facebook first used in the United States?
3.How many people use Facebook in the world now?
4.Why did Mark not want to sell Facebook to other companies?

Do you feel lonely when your best friend isn’t around? Here’s our advice to you ---and to all kids who feel lonely sometimes.
It’s hard when a best friend isn’t around --- maybe because he or she moved to a different school or a different class. You may feel left out at break or lunchtime. You want to have new friends, but how do you make them? Maybe it seems everybody else already has his or her friends. But remember, there’s always room for more friends.
Start by looking around your classroom --- think about which kids you’d like to play with at break. Look for chances to say hi to them, smile, and be friendly. Offer to share something or express your appreciation (欣赏) to them. Invite someone to play with you or say, “Do you want to sit here?” in the lunchroom. When you’re at break, walk over to kids you want to play with, act friendly, and say “Hi, can I play, too?” or just join in.
If you have trouble doing this or if you’re feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends. The best way to make friends is to be a friend. Be kind, be friendly, share, say nice things, offer to help ---and pretty soon, you’ll have one, or two, or even more new friends.
You might still miss that special best friend. But when you see each other, you can share something you didn’t have before he or she left. You can introduce him or her to your new friends!
