As the population of the planet increases, so does the number of homes, businesses, parking lots, schools, airports and roadways. All these structures use electricity and need to be lighted. Humans demand these lights. They want their homes more comfortable and they want their streets safe. The problem is that researchers are finding that all the light is having a negative effect on humans and wildlife as well.
Less than 10 years ago I drove to a thinly populated section of my town, lay down in the middle of the road and watched an attractive meteor shower (流星雨). The area was short of homes, street lights and traffic. If I did that today, I wouldn't be able to see the meteor shower as well. Due to the increase in street lights, I would surely be run over by a car.
Nowadays scientists are finding light pollution can be almost as bad as carbon dioxide pollution. If you've ever taken a flight at night, the view is beautiful, but you must remember that all the light you see wastes electricity. The crew of the space shuttles see an even bigger picture of how extensive the wasted electricity is worldwide.
One of the saddest parts of light pollution is that most of it is unnecessary and most of the outdoor light that we use is wasted. One only needs to look at a row of street lights to see how much of the light shines upwards and lights the sky: a total waste of electricity.
Additionally, somewhere electricity needs to be produced, and the production of electricity creates pollution by releasing greenhouse gases. This affects the air we breathe and our quality of life.
Scientists are also studying the effects of light pollution on wildlife. Thousands of birds die each year when they crash into highly lighted buildings, as they become puzzled by the light. It has been long known that tiny baby sea turtles become lost and follow lights on the shore instead of heading towards the sea.
Fortunately, light pollution is one of the easiest sources of pollution that can be corrected without a negative effect. Following some guidelines and a little searching on Google can give you many ideas on how to reduce your contribution to light pollution.
1. It is implied in Paragraph 3 that the best way to deal with light pollution is ________.
A. reducing the output of the lights
B. avoiding the use of unnecessary lighting
C. educating people about light pollution
D. inventing environmentally- friendly lights
2.Which of the following is the effect of light pollution?
A. Many animals species have died out.
B. More traffic accidents happen every day.
C. The air we breathe may be polluted.
D. It is much easier for us to watch meteor showers.
3.What can be inferred from the text?
A. We are almost at a loss how to deal with light pollution.
B. Global warming results in light pollution in some way.
C. Astronauts can’t see clearly in space nowadays.
D. Some animals use natural light to direct their movements.
4.What will probably be provided following the last paragraph?
A. Helpful tips for surfing the Internet.
B. approaches to decreasing light pollution.
C. Benefits of searching on Google.

The world’s elderly population is increasing. The number of older people ---those age 60 years or older ---is expected to double by 2050 and is growing faster than all younger age groups across the globe. That comes with an increasing need for caregivers which can provide 24-hour care, not only at hospitals or nursing homes, but also at private homes.
Already, caregiving robots are programmed to ask questions a nurse would ask and can keep an eye on patients for falls. These robotic assistants are expected to become increasingly marketable and reach 450,000 by 2045 because of the expected caregiver shortage in the USA.
“Unluckily, the hard structure of present caregiving robots prevents them from a safe human-robot interaction(互动), limiting their assistance to only social interaction and not physical interaction,” said Ramses Martinez, an assistant professor in Purdue’s College of Engineering . “After all, would you leave babies or old people in the hands of a robot?”
Recent advances in material science have enabled the production of soft robots with deformable (可变形的) bodies or the ability to reshape when touched , but today the complex design prevents the use of this technology at home .
However, Martinez and other researchers have developed a new design method which shows promise in enabling the production of soft robots using a 3D printer.
“The soft machines move like humans. Their ability to change their body structure and movement to adapt ( 适应 ) to a wide variety of environments will improve caregiving greatly,” says Martinez .
The researchers are looking for partners to test and bring their technology to market.
1.What does the underlined word “That” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.The younger age group
B.The group of older people
C.The population across the globe
D.The growth of the elderly population
2.What is the disadvantage of the present caregiving robots?
A.They can’t provide safe physical interaction
B.They can’t communicate with patients
C.They can’t watch patients for falls
D.They can’t provide 24-hour care.
3.What do we know about Martinez’s new design method?
A.It requires a special kind of 3D printer.
B.It makes the production of soft robots simpler.
C.It has been put onto the market.
D.It is hard for users to master.
4.What is the text mainly about?
A.The robot industry in the future
B.Effects of population ageing
C.Robots for the elderly created with 3D printers
D.The development of caregiving robots

More than half the planet’s population now live in cities, with limited access to the natural world. For Europe and Latin America, the figure is more than 70%. 1.
Gardening in particular is an opportunity for everyone to have such kind of experience, even if they live in built-up areas. It is typically seen as moderate (适度的) intensity exercise equal to playing doubles tennis or walking at a speed of 3.5mph, so it has similar fitness benefits.
2.Home and gardens have long been important for family food production, but gardening can also encourage people to eat more healthily and act as an educational resource on nutritious food. In fact, children who take part in gardening and grow their own food have a greater preference for, and increased consumption of, fruit and vegetables.
3.Research has shown that gardeners generally have greater life satisfaction, raised self-esteem and fewer feelings of depression and anger than non-gardeners.
This last point suggests that the mental benefits of gardening may be more than just a side-effect of the physical exercise involved, 4.People with strong social networks have an increased life expectancy, less stress and fewer visits to the doctor. In addition, spending time outdoors in a natural environment helps us to feel less stressed, reduce the symptoms of depression, and improve our concentration and attention.
All this evidence shows there’s a strong relationship between gardening and health, but we only know for sure that there is connection, not "cause and effect". 5.We also need to directly examine the immediate effects of gardening on people who have never previously taken part or are suffering from mental and physical ill health.
A. Gardening is also linked to better diets.
B. But more than this, it can promote people’s mental health.
C. One possible reason is that gardening can involve social interaction.
D. A good eating is supposed to include a balance of several food groups.
E. Yet contact with nature has varieties of benefits for both physical and mental health.
F. This means gardening alone is not necessarily a direct cause of any improvements in health.
G. Remaining socially active can also inspire seniors to build confidence and live a healthy life.
