“Well, let me tell you another accident. Once,my son hit his head on a stone while swimming in a lake. He began to,down when pinky jumped into the water, swam to him and pulled him up onto the bank,”John said.
“Great! Most pigs can't swim, but Pinky can !” I said.
“Last year, a strong fire broke out in my house. My family were asleep at that time. Pinky kept barking around the house until we all woke up. We rushed out just several minutes before the house collapsed(倒塌),”John continued.

"I'll send Mum some roses."While John was picking his flowers, a young man went inside. "How many roses can I get for only five dollars, Madam?" he asked. The assistant was trying to tell him roses were as expensive as forty dollars a dozen (一打). Maybe he would be happy with carnations (康乃馨).
"No, I have to have red roses." He said, "My mum was badly ill last year and I didn't get to spend much time with her. Now I want to get something special, it has to be roses as rose is her favorite."
After hearing it, John said he would pay the rest of the money for the young man. Moved by both of them, the assistant said," Well, lovely young men, thirty dollars a dozen, only for you." Taking the roses, the young man almost jumped into the air and ran out of the shop. It was well worth twenty-five dollars John paid to see the exciting moment. Then John paid for his dozen of roses and told the assistant to send them to his mother.
As he walked out, he felt nice. Suddenly he saw the young man crossing the street and going into a park. But soon he realized it was not a park but a cemetery (墓地). Crying, the young man carefully laid the roses," Mum, oh, Mum, why didn't I tell you how much I loved you? God, please help me find my mum and tell her I love her."

Body language is one of the most powerful means of communication, often even more powerful than spoken language. People around the world show all kinds of feelings, wishes and attitudes that they might never speak aloud. It is possible to read others around us, even if they do not want us to catch their unspoken communication. Of course, body language can be misread, but many gestures and actions are common.
The most common facial expression is, of course, the smile—its function is to show happiness and put people at ease. It does not always mean that we are truly happy, however. Smiles around the world can be false, hiding other feelings like anger, fear or worry. There are unhappy smiles, such as when someone loses face and smiles to hide it. However, the general purpose of smiling is to show good feelings.
From the time we are babies, we show unhappiness or anger by frowning. In most places around the world, frowning and turning one’s back to someone shows anger. Making a fist and shaking it almost always means that someone is angry.
How about showing that I am bored? Looking away from people or yawning will, in most cases, make me appear to be uninterested. However, if I turn toward and look at someone or something, people from almost every culture will think that I am interested.
Being respectful to people is subjective, based on each culture, but in general it is probably not a good idea to give a hug to boss or teacher. In almost every culture, it is not usually good to stand too close to someone of a higher rank. Standing at a little distance with open hands will show that I am willing to listen.
With so many cultural differences between people, it is great to have some similarities in body language. We can often be wrong about each other, so it is an amazing thing that we understand each other as well as we do!
1.What is even more powerful than spoken language according to the passage?

2.What is not good to do when you stay with someone of a higher rank?

3.Among the body languages introduced in the article, which one do you find the most useful? Why?

"Mom! Get my annoying(令人讨厌的)brother off me," I shouted. I woke up because of my brother. It happens almost every day. I got out of bed and put on my clothes hurriedly. Then I realized a huge problem一it was the first day of high school! It meant I had to go to the same school as my brother. But I didn't want to go there. At that exact moment, a thought came into my mind. I had never thought of it before.
I had to go to school in 30 minutes. I had to eat, pack and think of a plan to get my brother embarrassed(尴尬).20 minutes later, I got my bag and slowly walked out of my bedroom. I saw my mom taking the school uniform downstairs and in exactly a second I had a great plan. I quickly ran after my mom and followed her downstairs. Like a cat I hid behind a couch, seeing her put the uniform on the couch and make her way back upstairs. I only had one chance. I quickly wrote something that would make my brother embarrassed on the back of a shirt as my brother ran downstairs. We put on out clothes right away and we wore the same size. It was quite a cold day, so I took a jacket and put it on.
A couple of minutes later, we were in the car and were almost at school. I was secretly waiting for my great plan to happen. I got out of the car and ran to my classroom. I unpacked and decided to take off my jacket, because the day was heating up. Once I took my jacket off, everyone started laughing. I had no idea why everyone was laughing until suddenly I realized what had happened.

Last spring I was walking in a park. In front of me there was a mum and her 3-year-old daughter. The little girl was holding on to a string, which had a balloon at the other end.
All of a sudden, a sharp gust (一阵风) of wind took the balloon from the little girl. I thought she would scream and cry.
But, no! As the little girl turned to watch her balloon rise to the sky, she cheerfully shouted out, “Wow!”
I didn’t realize it at that moment. But that little girl taught me something.
Later that day, I received a phone call from a person with news of a sudden problem. I almost replied with “Oh no, what should we do?” But remembering that little girl, I found myself saying: “Wow, that is interesting! How can I help you?”
One thing is for sure — life is always going to put us off balance with things we don’t expect. But how we act to them is our choice. We can choose to be discouraged or interested.
No matter what the situation is, a “Wow!” will always beat “Oh, no.”
So next time you meet one of life’s unexpected gusts, remember that little girl and make it a “Wow!” experience. It always works.
1.Where was the little girl?
_____________________________________________________________________
2.How did the little girl feel when her balloon was blown away?
_____________________________________________________________________
3.Will you have an active mood when unexpected trouble comes up? Why or why not?

Jenny liked planting flowers in her yard. Her grandfather used to teach her how to plant and care for flowers. So her yard was the most beautiful one in her village.
One day, while she was looking through a flower list, a picture of a plant caught her eyes at once. Jenny had never seen a flower like that before. “I must have it,” she said to herself, and she ordered it.
When it arrived, Jenny planted it at the bottom of a stone wall at the back of her yard. It grew well, with beautiful green leaves all over it. Day after day, she felt disappointed. She wondered why her plant hadn’t bloomed(开花). She wanted to cut it down and plant something else in its place.
However, at this moment, her disabled neighbor invited her to his yard and said, “Thank you so much! You can’t imagine how much I enjoy the flowers that you have planted!” The young woman walked into her neighbor’s yard. She saw that on the other side of the wall the plant was full of flowers.
They were, indeed, the most beautiful flowers that she had ever seen. The plant grew up through the crevices(裂缝) in the wall. It did not flower on her side of the wall, but flowered on the other side.
If you don’t see the good result, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t successful.
1.What did Jenny’s grandfather teach Jenny?
2.Why was the disabled neighbor thankful to Jenny?
3.Do you like planting flowers? Why or why not?
