Experts say eating a range of fruit and vegetables is best, as part of a balanced diet, to protect against illness.
Research suggests eating at least seven portions(一份) of fruit and vegetables a day is more effective at preventing disease than the government's current five-a-day recommendation.
Is five a day enough?
Yes—but people should eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, the government says. The advice is based on World Health Organization guidelines, which are 25 years old.
Experts say eating five portions a day is enough to get the protective benefits of fruit and vegetables although eating more may be additionally beneficial.
What counts as a portion?
Fruit juice counts towards one portion of the recommended five portions per day.
For an adult, a minimum of 400g of fruit and vegetables should be eaten every day, or five portions of 80g.
The amount is different for children, based on activity levels and age, but a rough guide is that one portion should fit in the palm(手掌) of their hand.
Fruit and vegetables do not have to be eaten on their own and can be cooked in dishes such as soups and other meals.
Experts suggest that only taking in enough nutrition can we be healthy. That is to say, we must eat enough fruit and vegetables every day.

You know eating fruit and vegetables is helpful. But did you know it can also make you look good?
People who increased their intake over just six weeks developed a healthy glow and appeared more attractive, researchers found.
Scientists at St Andrews University found eating them subtly increased yellow and red pigments in the volunteers’ skin.
They monitored the food intake of 35 people and took pictures of their faces, arms and hands using a sensitive camera at the start, and after three and six weeks.
Increasing their intake of greens by 2.9 portions a day was found to make the person look healthier and an extra 3.3 portion could enhance their attractiveness, when their photographs were rated by others.
Fruit and vegetables are rich in carotenoids(类胡萝卜素), which are known to protect against cell damage from pollution and UV rays, and can also prevent age-related diseases including heart disease and cancer.
But while it was known eating extreme amounts of certain vegetables such as carrots could turn skin orange, it was not known a small increase was perceptible to others and was seen as appealing.
A camera measured changes to the skin’s redness, yellowness and lightness, and found it significantly changed in people who naturally increased their intake. These changes were not evident at three weeks.
Using light sensors, the researchers showed these red and yellow hues(色调,色相) were linked with the levels of carotenoids in their skin.
There are hundreds of carotenoids but those thought to have the most dramatic effect are lycopene(番茄红素)which gives tomatoes and red peppers their red color - and beta-carotene found in carrots as well as broccoli, squash, and spinach.
Skin color is also affected by chemicals called polyphenols(多酚), found in apples, blueberries and cherries, which cause blood rush to the skin surface.

Eat your vegetables. Wash your hands. Always say “please" and“thank you". We are full of advice for our children, but when it comes to money, we often have little to say. As a result, our children may grow up with clean hands and good manners, but without any idea how to manage their money.
Here are some basics that will help guide them their entire lives:
Show them the future. If your 13-year-old girl were to save$1,000,invest(投资)it at 8%and add$100 every month,by the time she's 65,she would have$980,983!
Be careful of credit(信用).Credit cards can help you buy necessary things and build a credit history, but they must be used responsibly, which means paying off your debt in time. Explain to your children that when you buy something using a credit card, you can easily end up paying two or three times what you would have paid if you used cash.
Teach patience. Suppose your child wants a new bicycle that costs $150. Rather than paying the cash, give him some regular pocket money and explain that by putting aside, say $15 each week,he will be able to buy it for himself in only ten weeks.
Provide incentive. Tell your children the importance of saving.“For every dollar he or she agrees to save and invest rather than spend, you agree to add another dollar to the pot,”says Cathy Pareto, expert in money planning.
Explain your values. Values and money are deeply intertwined, says Eilleen Gallo, co-author of The Financially Intelligent Parent. When your child demands that you buy something, explain why you really don’t want to buy it.“You might say,‘I'd rather save that money for your education,”,advises Gallo. Every time you spend or don't spend money, you have a chance to share your values.
64. The underlined word“incentive" in paragraph 6 means _____.
A. honor B. praise C. excitement D. encouragement
65. What leads the writer to write this article?
A. Parents want to know how to educate their children.
B. He wants to share his good ideas about money matters.
C. He thinks money management the most important for children.
