An empowering project is offering kids who have spent a long time in the hospital the chance to show how heroic they truly are.
The For The Win Project is a series of superhero movie posters starring kids with serious medical conditions and illnesses. It's co-work between photographer Jaimie Trueblood and creative director Jesse Wilson. They bring cameras, costumes and lighting into Los Angeles-area hospitals to give these little patients their very own photo shoots.
Once they've finished the photography and design, Jaimie and Jesse print out full-size, movie theater quality posters and get signatures (签名) and videos from Hollywood stars like Stan Lee and Carrie Fisher.
For a little girl named Noah, who wanted to be Darth Vader for her poster, the creators arranged for a Darth Vader character to present the finished piece.
“One of the highlights of the evening was when we projected the celebrity videos,” Jaimie said. “There were many happy tears. Noah gave everyone tons of hugs (拥抱), but the moment I will always remember was when things were winding down, Noah grabbed my hand, looked up to me and said it was the most amazing night ever.”
“We want to remind these kids every time they look at their poster that inside them there's a hero with the strength to fight whatever battles they may face,” Jesse said.
Jaimie and Jesse drew inspiration for the project from the story of Batkid, as well as their own children. The creative director had a different opinion of life and people after going through some health problems, losing family members and watching his own son struggle to survive in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit).
The photographer has spent years donating gifts and volunteering his time at children's hospitals in Los Angeles. “I try to keep in touch with as many families as I can, and one of them passed away this Thanksgiving. It was a reality check that really hurt, but gives us even more reason to do what we're doing and make these kids happy for whatever time they have left,” Jaimie said.
1.What do we know about the posters?
A. They are designed by kids.
B. They are made in Hollywood.
C. They look the same as film posters.
D. They have Jaimie and Jesse's signatures.
2.When Noah received her poster, she _____.
A. felt very happy and thankful
B. tried to fight back her tears
C. couldn't believe her eyes
D. couldn't control herself anymore
3.What can we infer from Jesse's experience?
A. He nearly lost his life.
B. He struggled to make a living.
C. He never got on with his family.
D. He has changed a lot from his past life.

Eco City Farms is an educational nonprofit organization. It seeks to empower the community by teaching economic development, job training and a healthier way of living. The group has set up farms near automobile repair businesses and fast food stores in urban neighborhoods.
Social activist Margaret Morgan-Hubbard founded Eco City Farms. She says that lack of fresh produce is a major health problem for children and their families living in Maryland. “What’s critical is that 70 percent of the people in these towns are either overweight, have some illnesses, for example, diabetes, or have other kinds of diet-related ailments because they don’t have access to healthy food.
Eco City Farms offers several programs for agriculture, food and finding jobs with environment-friendly businesses. People can also learn how to cook healthier foods and teach others how to prepare meals. On a recent day, Philip Sidibe demonstrated his cooking skills. He prepared Aloco, a popular food in Cameroon where he grew up. He and other young people not only cook their food, they also grow it in a large garden.
Tameka Barbour-Gaskins lives in Autumn Woods. She says her whole family is eating healthier meals because of the local produce. “I like junk food. I like quick meals. Not easy to just go from eating a certain way all your life to switching over to being healthier… With the urban garden here, with my son learning, he can help me switch around my style of eating. I want a healthy family.”
Margaret says the urban garden is an agent for change and the young people are its newest supporters. “Our program is about planting seeds. It’s about planting seeds not just in the ground, but in other human beings so that the movement can grow and it’s really exciting because these young people will be working with us throughout the year to help plan the actual farm and to finally own it.”

An old English saying says, "Laughter is the best medicine." One person who certainly would have agreed with this is Norman Cousins.
Norman Cousins worked for a magazine called Saturday Review for almost forty years. He also wrote articles about peace, traveling to many different countries to share his ideas.
In the 1960s, after returning to the United States from a busy and tiring trip to Europe, Mr. Cousins got sick. In less than a week after he got back, he could not stand. Every move that he made was painful. He was not able to sleep at night. The doctors told Mr. Cousins that they did not know how to cure his problem and he might never get over the illness. Mr. Cousins, however, refused to give up hope.
Mr. Cousins thought the illness could be caused by unhappy thoughts. He did not want to take medicine to cure himself. Instead, he felt that happy thoughts or laughter might cure his illness.
He began to experiment on himself while still in the hospital by watching comedy shows on television. Mr. Cousins quickly found that ten minutes of real laughter during the day gave him two hours of sleep without pain at night.
Deciding that the doctors could not help him, Mr. Cousins left the hospital and checked into a hotel room where he could continue his experiments with laughter. For eight days, Mr. Cousins rested in the hotel room watching comedy shows on television, reading funny books, and sleeping whenever he felt tired. Within three weeks, he felt well enough to have a holiday to Puerto Rico, where he began running on the beach for exercise. After a few months, Ms. Cousins was able to carry on his work. Dreaming is believing, claim researchers of a new study, who found that dreams have an effect on people’s behavior, judgment and they might contain important hidden truths as well.
“Psychologists’ interpretations (解释) of the meaning of dreams vary widely. But our findings show that people believe their dreams provide meaningful insight (见识) into themselves and their world,” said a lead author of the study Carey More wedge, an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University.
In six different studies, researchers surveyed nearly 1,100 people about their dreams. One of the studies focused on general beliefs about dreams and involved 149 university students. All students were asked to rate different theories about dreams. The experts found that a surprising majority of the participants supported the theory about dreams revealing (揭示) the hidden truths about themselves and the rest of the world.
In a second experiment, they surveyed 182 people at a Boston train station, and asked them to imagine one out of four possible situations that could have occurred the night before a scheduled airline trip. Most of the participants said that dreaming of a plane crash would be more likely to affect their travel plans than would just thinking about a crash, or being warned by the government of a terrorism risk. They said a dreamed crash would influence their travel plans just as much as learning about a real crash on their planned route would.
Another experiment involved 270 men and women from across the United States. In a short online survey, they were asked to recall one of the dreams they had seen about any person they knew. The findings showed that people were more likely to remember and describe pleasant dreams about a person they liked, rather than a person they disliked. Meanwhile, in most cases they tended to consider an unpleasant dream as more meaningful if it was about a person they disliked.
“In other words,” said More wedge, “people attribute (归因于) meaning to dreams when it corresponds (与……一致) with their pre-existing beliefs and desires.” The researchers say that more investigation (研究) is needed to fully understand how people interpret their dreams. According to More wedge, most people realize that dreams are not predicting their future, but they still try to find some meaning in there.
1.The purpose of the studies is to _______.
A. determine when people tend to remember their dreams
B. research whether dreams have anything to do with real life
C. find out how people interpret their dreams and what impact that has
D. understand what causes people to dream and how to interpret dreams
2.According to the second experiment, what might influence people’s travel plans most?
A. Thinking about a past plane crash.
B. Dreaming about a plane crash.
C. Hearing a government’s warning of a terrorism risk.
D. Imagining a plane crashing on their planned route.
3.What can be concluded from the study?
A. When a dream conflicts with people’s existing beliefs and desires, they tend to attribute less
meaning to it.
B. Most people disagree that dreams help them better know themselves and the world.
C. A majority of people believes that dreams can predict their future and try to find their meaning.
D. Dreams can be a useful tool for learning and problem solving.
4.Which kind of dream is seen as more meaningful than the rest?
A. A pleasant dream about a person the dreamer likes.
B. A pleasant dream about a person the dreamer dislikes
C. An unpleasant dream about a person the dreamer likes.
D. An unpleasant dream about a person the dreamer dislikes.

Who could have imagined that a treadmill(跑步机)on wheels would one day become a thing?!? Lopifit is an unusual means of transportation that allows you to power an electric bicycle by walking on a treadmill.
Lopifit founder Bruin Bergmeester says it all started when he asked himself the question “How can I use a treadmill outdoors?” He finally came up with a new design, adding an electric motor, and the Lopifit was born. It’s similar to an electric bicycle in that the motor only works when the rider puts power in as well. The Lopifit senses when you walk on the treadmill and uses the motor to turn a drive chain at the back of the treadmill, helping you reach a top speed of 17 miles per hour.
To use the Lopifit, simply turn on the battery(电池)and use your foot to slide the treadmill backwards and start the motor. Then get on and enjoy the ride! If you need speed, just walk on the treadmill, and if you want to coast(惯性滑行), all you have to do is stay still and admire the view. To stop, you have two hand breaks.
The Lopifit first hit the streets in 2014 and, unsurprisingly, became a hit overnight. That was actually quite challenging for the company, because it started getting calls for orders, but it was nowhere near ready for mass production. The unique treadmill bicycle could be bought this year, and Lopifit is struggling to keep up with demand, although the price is up to $2,115.
Some people consider this means of transportation stupid and unnecessary, although there is a very loyal fan-base of so-called Lopifitters. They simply believe that if you’re going to walk, you might as well do it the old-fashioned way.
But the Lopifit does have the special advantage of helping you “walk” really fast without much effort, or walking at cycling speed, if you will.
1.Lopifit is an electric bicycle which ________.
A. can be powered by the drive chain
B. can work without an electric motor
C. works when you walk on the treadmill
D. stops when you slide the treadmill forward
2.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The design of a Lopifit. B. The function of a Lopifit.
C. The structure of a Lopifit. D. The operation of a Lopifit.
3.What is probably the author’s attitude towards Lopifit?
A. Confident. B. Concerned.
C. Curious. D. Doubtful.
