For some minutes, all was quiet in the street. Then from across the street someone came walking.
It looked like a man of middle height, dressed in a big raincoat, a soft hat and rubber-soled boots or shoes, and making little sound while walking. No one was in sight. It was a street with two rows of about fifty small houses and there were three lamps on either side. The lamp nearest to the child’s house could be seen clearly, but the others were almost hidden by the smoky air. A car passed the end of the street and its lights showed faintly, but clearly enough to show the smooth skin of a woman’s face. The car disappeared as the woman, wrapped up in her coat, reached the doorway of the child’s house. She put a key in the lock quickly, pushed the door open and stepped inside, then closed the door without looking round. She began to breathe hard.
She leaned against the door for a moment, then straightened up as if with an effort, and walked towards the door of the front room, the passage leading to the kitchen, and the narrow staircase. She hesitated outside the door, then went up the stairs quickly but with hardly a sound. There was enough light from the narrow hall to show the four doors leading off a small landing(楼梯平台). She pushed each door open in turn and shone a torch inside, and the light fell upon beds, walls, furniture, a bathroom hand-basin, a mirror which flashed brightness back; but this was not what the woman was looking for. She turned away and went downstairs, and hesitated again at the foot of the stairs, then turned towards the kitchen. Clearly there was nothing there, or in the small washroom that she wanted. Two rooms remained; the front room and a smaller one next to it. She opened the front room door. After a moment, she saw the child’s bed and the child.

A. a woman was driving the car

D. a woman was walking by herself up the street.
2.After the woman closed the front door, she ___________.

3.When she was upstairs, the woman _______.
A. saw that there was a wash-basin in each room
B. noticed a mirror which she was looking for
C. found a torch in one of the rooms
D. opened four different doors
4.Once she was in the house, the woman behaved as if what she was looking for _______.

Some people have unforgettable past memories that make them sad and angry. Well, to deal with this, I suggest that you pick yourself up and move ahead. It is easier said than done! So here are a few ways to bring about the change.
Do something you really love doing. We all have interest in what we love working on, but most of us don’t have any time to do anything about them. Well, this is your time to do that! It’ll take your mind away from whatever is making you unhappy and of course it’ll help you remember your happy days in the past when you used to relax more often.
Think long and hard. I’m sure you must be doing this already, but I want you to think about the effect that forgiving other people could have. Think about whether you are ready to accept the changes this might bring.
Write about your feelings. Most people are too lazy to write, but it is often the best way to clear your mind. Write about your experiences and then forget about your past memories. On the Internet there are thousands of places where you can list out all your experiences without writing down your real name.
Make a start on this and I’m sure the frequency of your worries will decrease soon enough.

When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation (住所).I suggested that they should stay at ‘bed and breakfast’ houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories.
“We didn’t stay at bed and breakfast houses,” they said, “because we found that most families were away on holiday.”
I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought ‘VACANCIES’ meant ‘holidays’, because the Spanish word for ‘holidays” is ‘vacancies’.So they did not go to house where the sign outside said ‘VACANCIES’, which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to house where the sign said ‘NO VACANCLES’, because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full.As a result, they stayed at hotels!
We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word ‘DIVERSION’ means fun.In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word ‘DIVERSION’ on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun.Instead, the road ended in a large hole.
English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages.Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee, I said “Thank you” in French.I meant that I would like some more. However, to my surprise the coffee pot was taken away! Later I found out that “Thank you” in French means “No, thank you.”
1.My Spanish friends wanted advice about ______.
A.learning English
B.finding places to stay in England
C.driving their car on English roads
D.going to England by car
2.I suggested that they stay at bed and breakfast houses because ______.
A.they would be able to practise their English
B.it would be much cheaper than staying in hotels
C.it would be convenient for them to have dinner
D.there would be no problem about finding accommodation there
3.If you see a road sign that says ‘Diversion’, you will ______.
A.fall into a hole
B.have a lot of fun and enjoy yourself
C.find that the road is blocked by crowds of people
D.have to take a different road
4.When someone offered me more coffee and I said ‘Thank you’ in French, I ______.

For those who make journeys across the world, the speed of travel today has turned the countries into a series of villages.Distances between them appear no greater to a modern traveler than those which once faced men as they walked from village to village. Jet planes fly people from one end of the earth to the other, allowing them a freedom of movement undreamt of a hundred years ago.
Yet some people wonder if the revolution in travel has gone too far. A price has been paid, they say, for the conquest (征服) of time and distance. Travel is something to be enjoyed, not endured .The boat offers leisure and time enough to appreciate the ever-changing sights and sounds of a journey. A journey by train also has a special charm about it. Lakes and forests and wild, open plains sweeping past your carriage window create a grand view in which time and distance mean nothing. On board a plane, however, there is just the blank blue of the sky filling the narrow window of the airplane. The soft lighting, in-flight films and gentle music make up the only world you know, and the hours progress slowly.
Then there is the time spent being “processed” at a modern airport. People are conveyed like robots along walkways; baggage is weighed, tickets produced, examined and produced yet again before the passengers move to another waiting area. Journeys by rail and sea take longer, yes, but the hours devoted to being “processed” at departure and arrival in airports are luckily absent. No wonder, then, that the modern high-speed trains are winning back passengers from the airlines.
Man, however, is now a world traveler and cannot turn his back on the airplane. The working lives of too many people depend upon it; whole new industries have been built around its design and operation. The holiday maker, too, with limited time to spend, patiently endures the busy airports and limited space of the flight to gain those extra hours and even days, relaxing in the sun. speed controls people’s lives; time saved, in work or play, is the important thing—or so we are tolD. Perhaps those first horsemen, riding free across the wild, open plains, were enjoying a better world than the one we know today. They could travel at will, and the clock was not their master.
1.What does the writer try to express in Paragraph 1?
A.Travel by plane has speeded up the growth of villages.
B.The speed of modern travel has made distances relatively short.
C.The freedom of movement has helped people realize their dreams.
D.Man has been fond of traveling rather than staying in one place.
2.How does the writer support the underlined statement in Paragraph 2?
A.By giving instructions.
B.By analyzing cause and effect.
C.By following the order of time.
D.By giving examples.
3.According to Paragraph 3, passengers are turning back to modern high-speed trains because______.
A.they pay less for the tickets
B.they feel safer during the travel
C.they can enjoy higher speed of travel
D.they don’t have to waste time being “processed”
4.What does the last sentence of the passage mean?
A.They could enjoy free and relaxing travel.
B.They needed the clock to tell the time.
C.They preferred traveling on horseback.
D.They could travel with their master.

For thousands of years, people have seen things they didn’t understand in the sky. The United States Air Force first used the words “Unidentified Flying Object” to describe them. Today everyone uses the term UFO. When people see a UFO, it is usually no more than a weather balloon or an airplane. But the Center for UFO Studies goes on to receive hundreds of reports each year.
In 1947 a businessman and pilot, Kenneth Arnold, was flying near Mount Rainier, Washington when he saw nine shiny, round objects flying through the air. He told a newspaper reporter they looked like “pie plates skipping over water.” The reporter used the words “flying saucer(碟子)” in his story and today that is the popular name for UFOs.
The Center for UFO Studies lists three kinds of contacts with flying saucers. “Encounters(遭遇)of the first kind” are reports of unknown objects or lights in the sky. People have “Encounters of the second kind” when a UFO leaves burn marks or other signs on the ground. People report “Close encounters of the third kind” when they see aliens in or near a UFO.
