Global warming is the process of earth’s atmosphere heating up. Over the last 100 years, the average temperature of earth’s atmosphere has gone up 1 Fahrenheit. The weather has not changed exactly the same way in every area of the planet. But scientists think that the rise in average temperature is already affecting the earth’s climate.
Many scientists now believe that global warming is caused by cutting down trees, producing more trash, and polluting the environment are some of the reasons that the temperature has gone up. Many scientists believe that the biggest causes of global warming are new human technologies that release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
The greenhouse effect is not new. Certain gases in the atmosphere, like carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane, prevent heat energy from escaping back into space. In the past, the climate didn’t change much because nature produced just the right amount of greenhouse gases to deal with it.
Today, most scientists are pretty sure that the rising temperature can’t be blamed on nature. Ever since the industrial revolution in the 1700s, humans have relied on machines for daily life. And many of those machines give off a lot of greenhouse gases. An increase in the release of greenhouse gases from human activities is throwing nature off balance.
The climate is a very complicated thing, but many scientists agree that the rising atmospheric temperature has already damaged the environment. Sheets of ice, called glaciers, are melting in Antarctica and other parts of the globe. As glaciers break off and melt into the oceans, they are adding warm water to the oceans and causing the sea level to rise.
Over the past last 100years, the sea level has risen 6-8 inches around the world. That means land along the coasts is beginning to disappear under water. Bigger and warmer oceans are also adding to other weather problems caused by pollution in the atmosphere. Some places have received more rain, others have had bigger storms and a few areas in the world have experienced unusual droughts.
1.What is mainly talked about in this passage?
A. The melting of glaciers. B. Global warming.
C. The world’s weather. D. The earth’s temperature.
2.What causes global warming according to scientists?
A. Human activities. B. The nature itself.
C. The earth’s atmosphere. D. New discoveries
3.How can greenhouse gases make the globe warm?
A. They keep heat in the atmosphere
B. They let the heat go out into space.
C. They release heat into the air.
D. They can make the other gases warm.
4.From the passage we can see that global warming will bring about _________.
A. the pollution in the atmosphere B. natural disasters
C. population pollution D. the rise of glaciers

For years scientists have been worried about the effects of air pollution on the earth’s natural conditions. Some believe the air inside many houses may be more dangerous than the air outside. It may be one hundred times worse.
Indoor air pollution can cause a person to feel tired,to suffer eye pain, headache and other problems. Some pollutants(污染物质) can cause breathing disorders, diseases of blood and even cancer. Most scientists agree that every modern house has some kind of indoor pollution.
People have paid more attention to the problem now.It is said that when builders began making houses and offices, they did not waste energy. To do this they built buildings that limited the flow of air between inside and outside. They also began using man-made building materials. These materials are now known to let out harmful gases.
As the problem became more serious, scientists began searching for a way to deal with it.They discovered a natural pollution control system for buildinggreen plants.Scientists do not really know how plants control air pollution. They believe that a plant’s leaves absorb(吸收;吸引) or take in the pollutants. In exchange the plant lets out oxygen through its leaves and small organizations on its roots.Scientists suggest that all buildings should have one large plant or several small plants inside for every nine square meters of space.Studies of different plants show that each absorbs different chemicals. So the most effective(有效的) way to clean the air is to use different kinds of plants.Having green plants inside your house can make it prettier and more healthy place.
1.Generally speaking, indoor air pollution may be more harmful than that outside because _______.
A. indoor air pollution can often make people seriously ill
B. man-made building materials give off dangerous gases
C. there may be more harmful gases outside the buildings
D. the flow of air indoors is limited, which is very harmful
2.Some kind of indoor pollution can be found in _______.
A. every modern house B. every old house
C. all kinds of houses D. all kinds of offices
3.The indoor air pollution is caused by _______.
A. the limit of the flow of air between inside and outside
B. the building way that the builders want to save energy
C. the building things that are made of man-made materials
D. the man-made building materials and the limit of air-flow
4.The reason why we should use different kinds of plants to clean the air is that _______.
A. plants can let out all kinds of pollutants indoors
B. plants may take in more oxygen which people need
C. plants can absorb some kinds of harmful indoor chemicals
D. plants can make our houses prettier and more healthy

Scientists around the world have been studying the warming of waters in the Pacific Ocean known as El Nino(厄尔尼诺). The appearance of El Nino is known to affect the weather around the world. Scientists still do not completely understand it. Yet they now find they can use it to tell about the future in different areas of the world.
One example is the work of two scientists at Columbia University in New York, Mark Cane and Gordon Eshel. A scientist of Zimbabwe, Roger Buckland worked with them. They have found that when El Nino appears, Zimbabwe has little or no rain. This means corn crops in Zimbabwe are poor. The last El Nino was in 1991 to 1993. That was when southeastern Africa suffered a serious lack of rain.
The scientists wrote about their recent work in the publication Nature. Their computer program can tell when an El Nino will develop up to a year before it does. They suggest that this could provide an effective early warning system for southern Africa, and could prevent many people from starving.
1.El Nino is known as ___.
A. the changing of the weather in southern Africa
B. the warming of waters in the Pacific Ocean
C. the weather which brings drought(旱灾) to Africa
D. the weather phenomenon (现象)that brings heavy rains to Africa
2.Scientists study El Nino in order that ___.
A. they can provide a kind of early warning to the place that will suffer from drought
B. they can tell why Zimbabwe has little or no rain
C. they can do some research work in this field.
D. they can put all this information into their computers.
3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Nature is the name of the article written recently by the scientists.
B. Three scientists from the USA work on this subject.
C. Southern Africa suffered a serious drought and many people died from hunger.
D. El Nino has something to do with Zimbabwe’s poor crops.
4.What’s the best title for this passage?
A. Appearance of El Nino is Predictable(可预测的) B. Drought in Zimbabwe
C. Early Warning System D. Weather in Africa

They may be small, but they build big things! Coral(珊瑚虫), which live in the warm parts of the Earth's oceans, are probably the biggest builders on the planet. Coral polyps turn calcium(钙)from seawater into a kind of hard stone. Slowly, they build up a hard skeleton(外骨骼)around their bodies. When polyps die, their skeletons remain. Young polys attach themselves to the old skeletons and make new skeletons. Over time, various shapes are slowly built up into amazing coral reefs(珊瑚礁).
Scientists sometimes think of coral reefs as underwater cities. There are nearly a thousand coral species. Reefs are also home to millions of sea creatures, like fish, crabs, turtles, and sharks.
Humans don't live in coral reef cities, but we get a lot from them. Reefs create jobs for people in the fishing industry and other related businesses. They also supply us with food. Reefs protect our coasts-the coral slows waves down and protects beaches from wearing. Chemicals from reef creatures help scientists create new medicines, which help doctors treat different illnesses.
Coral reefs are very important, yet we don’t take good care of them. Environmental problems have already killed about twenty percent of the world’s reefs. About half of the remaining reefs are dying, and experts believe all of Earth's coral reefs will be in danger by 2050.
People catch too many reef fish and often damage the reefs. Polluted water also causes problems because reef-destroying algae(海藻)grow in dirty water. Even air pollution hurts coral reefs. Global warming causes warmer ocean water, which can cause polyps to lose helpful algae. Without the algae, coral turns white. If it continues, the coral dies.
Can we save coral reefs? Experts say yes-if we make hard choices. Many people around the world are working to protect reefs. Humans and coral polyps are very different, but we both build amazing cities. We will both win if people protect our beautiful oceans.
1.What can be learned about coral reefs?
A.They turn calcium into stones. B.They can be found in cold waters.
C.They provide food for coral polyps. D.They are formed by the growth of coral
2.How do coral reefs help humans?
A.By taking in pollution. B.By protecting beaches.
C.By improving the environment. D.By giving out important chemicals.
3.The helpful algae give coral its .
A.hardness B.size C.color D.shape
4.What would be the best title for the text?
A.Cities in the sea B.Reefs in trouble
C.Why are reefs important? D.How can we protect coral reefs?

Big cats have existed on the earth for millions of years, though scientists aren’t sure exactly how long. But a new study indicates that a skull (颅骨) of a snow leopard (豹) relative that was recently unearthed is 4.4 million years old. That makes it the oldest big cat fossil (化石) ever found.
A team of US and Chinese scientists unearthed the skull in Tibet. This creature is not a direct ancestor to big cats, but it is closely related to the snow leopard, study leader Jack Tseng told the Associated Press. The fossil lends evidence to the belief that big cats existed in Asia and spread out from there.
Big cats are at the top of the food chain and have few predators of their own. Big cats include snow leopards, clouded leopards, tigers and lions. Based on genetic judgements, most scientists believe they first existed in Central Asia. But previously, the oldest known big cat fossil was 3.6 million years old and found in Africa.
The new fossil findings were published in the November 13 issue of the science journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. Tseng and his team were fossil hunting in the Himalayas in 2010 when they discovered some bones, including the buried cat skull. The researchers were able to determine its age by studying the surrounding rocks and soil. The skull indicates that the animal was about the size of a clouded leopard, which can grow up to 50 pounds. In 2012, the team returned to unearth more cat bones.
David Polly from Indiana University told the Associated Press that the fossil is “convincingly older than the current record holder”. He added that there could be even older big cat fossils in the Tibetan plateau to uncover.
1.What does the newly unearthed skull prove?
A. Big cats might have their origins in Asia.
B. The oldest fossil is 4.4 million years old.
C. The snow leopard is the oldest big cat.
D. The skull is of big cats’ direct ancestor.
2.What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. relatives. B. enemies.
C. partners. D. protectors
3.How do the researchers know the skull’s age?
A. By measuring its size and forehead.
B. By examining other bones around it.
C. By studying its chemical composition.
D. By exploring the rocks and soil around it.
4.Where was “the current record holder” in the last paragraph found?
A. Asia. B. Africa.
C. America. D. Australia.
