Many of you have heard a Cinderella (灰姑娘) story, but you may not know that there are over a hundred different ways to tell the Cinderella story. When writers tell the same story in a different way, it is called their “version” of the story. The story of Cinderella has many different versions. Let’s read two of them and find out how they are different.
The version that most people know is the oldest one written in 1697 by Charles Perrault from France. This is the version where the birds help make Cinderellas’s dress and the mice turn into carriage men (马车夫) and help Cinderella go to the dance in a pumpkin (南瓜) carriage. In this version, many of the animals are Cinderella’s friends. They help her meet the Prince. Cinderella marries the Prince and they live happily together ever after.
In another version of this story written in the 1850s by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm from Germany, the birds help Cinderella in the whole story. Cinderella’s father gives her a little tree when he comes back from a party. She plants the little tree and her tears water it until it grows into a tall tree.
The birds now live in the tree and they give Cinderella a dress of gold and shoes of gold. Cinderella goes to the party to meet and dance with the Prince. Later, he finds Cinderella at home doing work for her stepmother (继母). Cinderella marries the Prince and they live happily ever after.
Now you can understand what the word “version” means and how more than one writer can tell a story in a different way. That is why there are many versions of the same story.
1.In the story written in 1697, ________ helped make Cinderella’s dress.
A. her father B. her stepmother
C. the birds D. the mice
2.In Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s story, Cinderella’s father ________.
A. gives her some birds
B. gives her a little tree
C. makes a gold dress for her
D. makes gold shoes for her
3.The Chinese meaning of the word “version” in this passage is probably “________”.
A. 人物 B. 语气 C. 方法 D. 版本
4.If we put the passage into three parts, which of the following is the best?
(①=" Para." (自然段) 1 ②=" Para." 2 ③=" Para." 3 ④=" Para." 4 ⑤=" Para." 5)
A. ①; ②③④; ⑤ B. ①②; ③; ④⑤ C. ①②; ③④; ⑤ D. ①; ②; ③④⑤

You may have heard of the old story about the world's most whole-hearted fisherman. He had out-fished his friend all morning long. They used the same live bait (鱼饵), the same equipment and fished together in the same mountain stream. But he had almost caught a bucket of fish while his friend had yet to catch even one.
"What's your secret?" asked the friend. "I haven't even gotten any one!"
The successful fisherman emptied the bait of his mouth into a cupped hand and replied. "You have to keep your worms (鱼虫) warm."
Whether or not we fish or even eat fish, there is a lesson to be learned here. We are most likely to succeed when we fully put our hearts into a task. Especially if the task before us is difficult or there seems little probability of success. Whether we want to build a new business or write that first novel, we should see how willing we are to do what it takes-even if it means keeping the worms warm.
So I often ask myself. "How much do I want this?" when some people fish, if they don't catch, they don't eat. Some things are too important for me to risk failure. So how much do I want to succeed at this career (事业) or this dream? And how hard am I willing to work? If "success" only comes before "work" in the dictionary, I may have to work harder than I've ever worked before. But if I want it enough, the hard work will be worth it.
"Always bear in mind," said Abraham Lincoln, "that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other one thing."
And that is where it always begins: with a whole-hearted resolution to succeed—in a task, in a career, in a life. How much do you want this? And, how hard are you willing to work? Start there, and great things can happen.
1.Paragraph 1 is mainly about the old story of ________.
A.two friends B.Abraham Lincoln C.some baits D.a fisherman
2.The lesson we learned is to ________ from Paragraphs 2-4.
A.only keep the worms warm B.write the first novel soon
C.put our hearts into any task D.be willing to do nothing
3.Why does the writer often ask himself the two questions?
A.See if he has been whole-hearted. B.Be able to risk failure anytime.
C.Find out if the hard work is worth it. D.Work less harder than before.
4.What does the word "it" in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.Career. B.Dream. C.Success. D.Work.
5.What does the writer want to tell us according to the last two paragraphs?
A.Own your resolution is the most important.
B.Do as Abraham Lincoln says, you'll succeed.
C.To succeed begins with a whole-hearted resolution.
D.Start anywhere, and great things can always happen.

You must have read or heard of the sad love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu. But can you imagine the two singing opera in English instead of speaking poetic Chinese?
Jia and Lin are two characters from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions《红楼梦》),written by Cao Xueqin (1715-1763). Now the book has been made into an English-language opera. The opera was first performed last September in San Francisco, US. This month it comes to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan.
Many of the opera’s creators have backgrounds (背景)in both Chinese and American cultures, including the director and playwrights. Their understanding of both cultures helped them to change a Chinese classic into a foreign-language opera.
The book, which covers the rise and fall of the Jia family, has 120 chapters and hundreds of characters. But opera writer David Henry Hwang cut down the number of characters to just seven. Huang, a Chinese-American, focused on the love story between Jia and Lin and tried to write a heartbroken tragedy (悲剧)that everyone would understand.
The art director Timmy Yip, from Hong Kong, tried to help foreign people understand the characters using costumes (服装)and stage settings (布景).He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costume. When Lin shows up on stage, there is usually water around her on the stage.
The creators consider it to be a meaningful job to introduce a Chinese classic to Western audiences. Hwang told China Daily he was happy to “have made a contribution to the land where my parents were born.
