While they were almost unknown twenty years ago, it seems that mobile phones these days are part of everyone’s life. However, as with other inventions such as the television and the computer, they are a double-edged sword, inviting both supporters and opponents, especially in regard to their use in public places like restaurants and cinemas.
One of the strongest arguments in favor of forbidding mobiles in public places is the trouble they cause to other people. For example, although we are often asked to turn off our phones when in a cinema, the film that we are watching is often interrupted by the sound of at least five rings. To make it even worse, some people insist on continuing their conversation, even though hundreds of people can hear what they say, which often drowns out the voice from the film. As a result, many people would welcome a ban on mobile phones in places where they might disturb other people.
On the other hand, there are a number of arguments against such a ban. It is difficult to stop people bringing with them their mobile phones in public places, making it almost impossible to call for a ban. Some people would see this as an infringement(侵犯)of their rights, while other people would say they need them in case of an emergency. Despite being asked to silence their phones, some people insist on leaving them on.
It seems to me that a ban on mobile phones would not have any result in the end. People will find a way to escape a ban. Nevertheless, people should be discouraged from using them in public places, unless it is highly necessary. They should be made to know that it is bad manners to use them in certain places or at certain times. Of course, there will always be someone who thinks their call is more important than others’ peace and quiet!
1.Why are many people for a ban on the use of mobiles in public places?
A. Because hundreds of people can hear them talk.
B. Because they are asked to turn off their mobiles.
C. Because other people’s peace and quiet is more important.

2.Among those who are against a ban, some believe that __________.

Twenty-five years ago, most young Britons wanted a career in law, to be a doctor, or, if they were creative enough, to take up singing. But today, things stand differently.
According to a survey by Tesco Mobile, a UK company, the “dream job” of young people aged between 16 and 25 in the UK is a video blogger, or “vlogger”. The survey, carried out among 1,002 people, found that as much as 40 percent of them put vlogger as their number one choice on a list of ideal careers.
This change is undoubtedly as a result of the Internet and social media. They have made it so much easier to reach audience of the world, without having to enter a career in show business in the traditional way.
In the past, the biggest stars were trained by the Hollywood studios; now, anyone with a computer camera can become a star. Vloggers are the big stars of today because they are normal people interacting with their fans about everyday life.”

Although being vloggers is popular, some young people choose to follow careers that don’t necessarily earn them fame, but allow them to make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies. Young Israeli David Leshaw, for example, runs a business called the Finishers Club. It’s an online platform for runners to keep a record of their races. Here in Alaska, the wolf almost disappeared a few years ago, because hunters were killing hundreds of them for sport. However, laws were passed to protect the wolves from sportsmen and people who catch the animals for their fur. So the wolf population has greatly increased. Now there are so many wolves that they are destroying their own food supply.
A wolf naturally lives on animals in the deer family. People there also hunt deer for food. Many of the animals have been destroyed by the very cold winters recently and by changes in the plant life there. When the deer can’t find enough food, they die.
If the wolves continue to kill large numbers of deer, the deer will disappear some day. And the wolves will, too. So we must change the life cycles there. If we killed more wolves, we would save them from starving. We also save deer and some farm animals.
In another northern state, wolves attack cows and chickens for food. Farmers want the United States government to send a team of scientists to study the problem. They believe it is necessary to kill wolves in some areas and to protect them in places where there is a small population.
1.In Alaska, laws have been passed to ____.
A.protect people from wolves and deer
B.protect wolves from becoming dangerous
C.protect wolves from dying out
D.keep wolves from killing large numbers of deer
2.Why is it that if wolves go on killing a good many deer the wolves will die out?
A.Because wolves will have no deer to kill.
B.Because people will kill them for punishment.
C.Because killing deer is dangerous.
D.Because wolves mainly live on deer.
3.In order to protect more deer from being killed, one way is to ____.
A.pass a law B.keep deer away from wolves
C.kill more wolves D.serve wolves more food
4.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

The Panama Canal opened almost 100 years ago.It connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and reduces travel by about 13,000 kilometers and avoids the need for ships to sail around Cape Horn at the bottom of South America.
Built from 1904 to 1914,the canal has seen annual traffic rise from about 1,000 ships early on to 14,702 ships in 2008.In total, over 815,000 ships have passed through the canal. It has been named one of the seven modern wonders of the world.More than forty ships pass through the canal each day.
Now,a major expansion(扩大) project will permit more ships and bigger ships to pass through the canal.Jorge Quijano, the Panama Canal’s executive vice president of engineering, says,“The present canal has a total capacity(容量) of about 340 million tons a year. With the expansion we expect to double that.”
For years, shipbuilders limited the size of many ships so that they could pass through the Panama Canal. But now many shipping companies use bigger ships to transport more goods as a way to reduce costs.Mr.Quijano says the expansion project will allow many of these larger ships to use the canal.
Workers are building the new locks(船闸) alongside the old ones, which will remain in use.The existing locks are 305 meters long and 33.5 meters wide. The new ones will be 427 meters long and 55 meters wide. They will be able to handle ships with drafts(吃水量) of more than 15 meters. At present, ships can ride only 12 meters deep in the canal.
Engineers could not make the new locks too big.Mr.Quijano says the plans have to balance the size of the locks with the cost for ships to use the canal.
The cost of the expansion is estimated at more than five billion dollars. The new locks are set to open in time to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Panama Canal.
1.We can learn from the first two paragraphs that .
A.the Panama Canal was built close to Cape Horn
B.it took ten years to complete the Panama Canal
C.the Panama Canal now sees a daily traffic of about 400 ships
D.the Panama Canal is one of the seven ancient wonders of the world
2.After the expansion of the Panama Canal, .
A.there will be no limitation to the size of ships through it
B.it will have a total capacity of 500 million tons a year
C.the cost of transporting goods will be relatively low
D.the charge for using the canal will be reduced
3.What do we know about the old locks?
A.They are still used.
B.They will be removed.
C.They have been replaced by the new ones.
D.Ships with drafts of 15 meters can pass through them.
4.Why not make the new locks too big?
A.Because they will cost too much.
B.Partly because of the cost for ships.
C.Because there are not so many workers.
D.Because engineers are against it.
5.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A.To introduce the history of the Panama Canal.
B.To show the importance of the Panama Canal.
C.To report the expansion project of the Panama Canal.
D.To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Panama Canal.

When Cathleen Gardiner’s twins were born 17 years ago, doctors told her that they were a pair in a million. One had Down syndrome(低能综合症), while the other did not. Here, Cathleen tells their touching story.
Since Sean was born 17 years ago, I have always thought that he is just as wonderful as his brother and sister. Though he had a disability(残疾), we have never viewed him as a burden. He has always been a blessing. The doctors explained that though they were twins, they came from two different eggs. Lisa could walk at 11 months old, while Sean didn’t take his first steps till he was three. By two, Lisa was talking a lot, but Sean wasn’t able to speak until he was nearly four.
For the first five years of his life, Sean needed a great deal of care. Looking after him was my full-time job, though I also worked as a technical adviser in a computing company. We never treated them differently. We gave them the same toys and spoke to them in the same way. We encouraged Sean to keep up with Lisa, even though he never could, and we would help him develop his abilities. We sent them to the same primary school even after doctors advised us that Sean should go to a school for the disabled.
We had to explain to Lisa that he wouldn’t learn as quickly as she would. She told us that she’d help him with his school work. Having a non-disabled twin has really helped Sean develop. The love they share has given him a great deal of support. Now Sean and Lisa are both about to finish high school. I don’t think he would have done nearly as well today without Lisa’s help.

A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.One.
2.Mrs. Gardiner and her husband regarded Sean as _______.
A.a boy making others touched B.a normal child without disabilities

3.The third paragraph mainly tells us that _______.
A.the couple treated the twins equally
B.Cathleen did all she could to look after Sean
C.the couple didn’t follow the doctor’s advice
D.the couple encouraged Sean to grow up
