It happened to me recently that I was telling someone how much I enjoyed reading Barack Obama’s Dreams from My Father and how it had changed my views of the former US president. The person I was talking to agreed with me that it was a wonderfully written book. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama, which showed that he had no idea of his background at all. I realized that I was talking to a book liar.
______ Nearly two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven’t read. In the World Book Day survey, Dreams from My Father is at number 9. The survey lists top ten books, and different writers, which people have lied about. As I don’t lie very often, I’ll admit (承认) that I haven’t read all the ten books. But I am pleased to say that I have read the book at number one, George Orwell’s 1984. I think it’s absolutely outstanding.
When people were asked why they lied, the most common reason was to impress someone they were speaking to. This could be difficult if the conversation went deeper!
The World Book Day survey also has some other interesting information in it. It shows that many people lie about having read classical works by Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, Charles Dickens and so on. But when asked which writers they really enjoy, they named J.K. Rowling, Jilly Cooper, and Stephen King (ah, the big sellers). Forty-one percent of people asked said they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story.
So which books have you lied about reading-if any-and which is your favorite?
1.Which of the following can be the missing part in Paragraph 2?
A.Do you know what a book liar is?
B.And it seems that that person is not the only one.
C.Dreams from My Father is really popular in the world.
D.I’m a book liar, too.
2.What does the World Book Day survey show?
A.Over 40% of people didn’t really read a whole book by famous writers.
B.People don’t like Dreams from My Father and 1984.
C.Few people lie about having read classical works by Jane Austen.
D.Many people like Charles Dickens better than J. K. Rowling.
3.If we put the passage into three parts, which of the following is the best?

Ten-year-old Barack Obama was one of the only three black students at his school in Hawaii, the US. He is different from most of the other students. White girls wanted to touch his hair. A white boy asked him whether his father ate people. “I lied to them that my father was a Kenyan prince(王子). But I kept asking myself who I was,” said Obama.37 years later, to everyone’s surprise, the boy became well-known. On November 4th, 2008, Obama became the first black president in US history. Obama was born to an African father and a white American woman from a small town in the US in 1961. He grew up in Indonesia and Hawaii. This unusual background (背景) made him wonder who he was. He even wanted to forget this question. With the help of his friends, Obama finally turned his life around in the university. After leaving from Columbia University in 1983, he had a great idea—working hard to bring change to the world. So he moved from New York to Chicago in 1985 and worked in a poor African-American area for three years. After that, he studied laws in Harvard University and graduated in 1991.Later,he became the third black senator (参议员) in US history. During his race to the highest post in the US, Obama talked about his background. He called for a United States of America, rather than a white America or a black America. Obama’s success made Martin Luther King’s dream come true. That is: A man should not be judged by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character.” He said at the speech in Chicago after he was elected.
