“I gave her thirty,” answered Morison.
“Why did you do that?” asked Philip.
“I thought you often bought roses for her in my shop. I want to give her six roses as the gifts. Six is a good number, you know,” said Morison.
“How foolish you are!” He threw his letter on the table. “Read it!”

Dear Mimi,

Jimmy and Tommy were good friends. They both attended the same class in a school. Tommy was a clever boy. He could answer questions cleverly in class. He was quick at thinking. It seemed that everything was easy to him. He never seemed to work hard. He spent much time on football or other games.
Jimmy was not so clever as Tommy. He was slow in his work. But he was hard-working. He worked hard and steadily(扎实地) at his lessons day after day.
In the final examination of the term, everyone thought Tommy would be the first in the class. But it was wrong. The slow but hard-working Jimmy got the first place.
Although Tommy was quick and clever, he did not work hard, so he could not get the first. Jimmy was just different. He was slow but hard-working. So he did well in his lessons.
The story tells us that one cannot depend on (依靠) one’s cleverness. One still has to work hard and steadily(稳定地)at one’s own subjects or work.
1.Jimmy was as clever as Tommy.
2.Jimmy and Tommy were both hard-working.
3.Tommy got the first in the final exam.
4.Tommy didn’t like playing football.
5.Success depends on hard –working.

An elephant and a monkey lived together in the forest. They were good friends, but one day they quarreled with each other. The elephant was very proud because he was very strong; however, the monkey was also proud because he was very quick — he could climb up very quickly.
The elephant said, “It is better to be strong than to be quick.”
“No,” the monkey said, “it is better to be quick than to be strong.”
So they went to a clever owl (猫头鹰) and asked, “Which is better, to be strong or to be quick?”
The owl said, “Do you see that tall tree with the golden fruit on the other side of the river? You must go and pick the fruit and bring it to me, and then I will tell you.”
So the elephant and the monkey set out. Soon they came to the river. The monkey was afraid of the deep water, and he had to climb up on the elephant’s back. After a while they found the tree. Then the monkey climbed quickly up the tree. He picked the big golden fruit and threw it down to the ground. The elephant picked up the fruit.
