The WHO will ask all countries, including the countries that haven’t yet reported any cases, to make plans to control this disease.
“It was reported that about 35,000 people infected with the H1N1 virus in 74 counties,” Margaret Chan, an officer of the WHO, said on Thursday. “Further spread of the disease is possible,” Ms Chan said. So far, WHO doesn’t expect a sudden jump in the number of serious or dead cases reported.

Women who want to succeed at work should resist the temptation to act like men, scientists have said. Studies show that ambitious women are often less likely to get ahead than those who show more female characteristics. However, if they try to adapt, promotion comes their way. The findings, which will let assertive (过分自信的) women down, suggest that the best way for a woman to succeed in a man’s world is to act like a lady.
Past research has shown that women with self-confidence and other characteristics linked with successful management can be put aside at work in favor of gentle types. It is thought that while such characteristics are highly praised in men, ambitious women are penalized for not being feminine enough. Instead of being seen as strong managers, ambitious women are in an unfavorable situation.
In one US study, researchers explored personal details from university students applying for a summer job at a bank. A women applicant who attempted to apply for special wages to pay her transport or living costs was three and a half times less likely to get a job offer than a similar male. In fact, this kind of woman was the least likely to get taken on.
The latest study set out to explore what women who are naturally assertive could do to get ahead in the workplace. Eighty young men and women completed surveys about their personality while studying in college. Around eight years later, the researchers got back in touch with them to find out how their careers were going. Some had been promoted five times, others just once or twice. The results showed that ambitious women who stick to their decisions had been promoted less than more feminine groups. But the ambitious women who made a conscious effort to not appear to be threatening by “self-controlling” their behavior had done better than those who had carried on ignoring others’ views.
1. What does the underlined word “penalized” mean in the second paragraph?
A. Treated badly B. Asked to leave
C. Looked down upon D. Made sb. have a disadvantage
2.According to the passage, if an ambitious woman and a similar man both ask the company for an extra payment, ______.
A. the woman is less likely to be accepted
B. the woman will work harder if she gets the payment
C. the man can make a good impression on the boss
D. they can be both accepted if they use proper words
3.The ambitious women in the latest study ______.
A. had been promoted only once or twice
B. tried hard to be as successful as gentle types
C. were more accepted at work after they controlled their behavior
D. filled in the surveys after they graduated from college
4.What can we learn from the passage?
A. Successful management is highly praised in women.
B. Some women will be disappointed by the massage.
C. Men acting like a lady are likely to be promoted at work.
D. The latest study was aimed at how to become a successful boss.
5.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. How assertive women can control their behavior.
B. Feminists can do better by controlling their behavior.
C. Acting like a man won’t get women promoted at work.
D. How the ambitious women can avoid acting like men.

At 1,345 meters above sea level, Ben Nevis is not the world’s most difficult mountain to climb. But things get considerably tricky if instead of hiking shoes you put on a pair of 5-inch high heels, especially if you’re a guy. One English teenager recently proved that it was not impossible.
Ben Conway, a 19-year-old art student from London, recently began the challenge as a way to stand out in an application(申请) for a scholarship for the School of Communication Arts in Brixton. He started his unusual high-heel climb at 8 a. m., on June 27, and was joined by Callum MacKenzie Allen, a friend from his art foundation year, who videotaped the whole thing for a two-minute video that was used as his application project. The whole climb took five hours and wasn’t the smoothest experience.
Halfway up Ben Navis, one of his shoes broke, so he had to tape the shoes to his feet to make sure they stayed on. The weather didn’t make it easy for him either, as he claimed that it rained pretty much the whole time, and he had to go against 40 to 50 miles an hour winds. Due to these difficult conditions, Ben and his friend had to turn back after reaching 900 meters up the mountain.
Besides providing an art school application project, the high-heel climb also allowed the 19-year-old to raise some money for worthy causes(事业), like Sal’s Shoes, which provides footwear for barefoot children around the world.
“Raising money for charity brings happiness to people’s lives and if I can do something ridiculous and bring someone happiness, then that’s what it’s all about.” Ben said.
1.What can replace the underlined word “tricky” in Paragraph 1?
A. pleasant B. boring.
C. difficult. D. smooth.
2.Why did Allen videotape the high-heel climb for Ben?
A. To prove nothing is impossible.
B. To record a special experience.
C. To develop their friendship.
D. To help Ben’s application.
3.What does Paragraph 3 focus on?
A. The difficulties in the climb.
B. The climbing way.
C. The terrible weather.
D. The expected thing.
4.What can best describe Ben’s story?
A. Puzzling. B. Encouraging.
C. Exciting. D. Frightening.

Reading is not the only way to gain knowledge of the work in the past. There is another large reservoir (知识库) which may be called experience, and the college students will find that every craftsman (工匠) has something he can teach and will generally teach gladly to any college student who does not look down upon them. The information from them differs from that in textbooks and papers chiefly in that its theoretical (理论的) part -- the explanations of why things happen -- is frequently quite fantastic (神奇的) . But the demonstration (示范) and report of what happens, and how it happens are correct even if the reports are in completely unscientific terms. Presently the college students will learn, in this case also, what to accept and what to reject. One important thing for a college student to remember is that if Aristotle could talk to the fisherman, so can he.
Another source of knowledge is the vast store of traditional practices handed down from father to son , or mother to daughter, of old country customs ,of folklore (风俗). All this is very difficult for a college student to examine, for much knowledge and personal experience is needed here to separate good plants from wild grass. The college students should learn to realize and remember how much of real value science has found in this wide, confused wilderness and how often scientific discoveries of what had existed in this area long age.
1. In the last paragraph the phrase "this wide, confused wilderness" refers to _____.
A.personal experience
B.wild weeds among good plants
C.the information from the parents
D.the vast store of traditional practices
2. Which of the following statements is supported by the passage?
A.The college students have trouble separating good plants from wild grass
B.Craftsman’s experience is usually unscientific
C.The contemptuous (傲慢的) college students will receive nothing from craftsmen
D.Traditional practices are as important as experience for the college students
3. The author advises the college students to ______ .
A.be contemptuous to the craftsman
B.be patient in helping the craftsman with scientific terms
C.learn the craftsman’s experience by judging it carefully
D.gain the craftsman’s experience without rejection
4. The main idea of this passage is about ________.
A.what to learn from the parents B.how to gain knowledge
C.why to learn from craftsman D.how to deal with experience
