Great Britain is traditionally made up of three parts: England in the south, Scotland in north and Wales in the southwest.
England is the largest and most developed of all the three. Its area, about 130,000 square kilometers, takes up nearly 60% of the whole island. Its population is mere than 46 million which makes up 85% of the country's whole population. The importance of England is so great in Britain that some foreigners just say “England” when they mean Britain. The same is true of the custom of speaking of the British people as the English who are the majority in the United Kingdom.
Scotland is the second largest both in area and population. It has an area of about 78,760 square kilometers, less than 30 % of the whole is land, with a population of 5 million, less than one-tenth of the total population.
Wales is the smallest of the three both in area and population. Its area, 20,700 square kilometers, makes up less than 9 % while its population, 2.7 million, does not exceed 5 % of the whole.
1.Which of the following maps shows the right position of England, Scotland and Wales? (E= England S= Scotland W = Wales)

The red phone box in Britain is a perfect example of the British traditional culture. However, with the fast development of mobile phones, it has lost its place in people’s everyday life. In order to save their loved red phone boxes, people have come up with many ideas, for example, to turn them into toilets or art houses.
In a village in Somerset, a place in South West England, villagers have found a new way to save their red phone box. 1.. The idea was given by a local villager, Janet Fisher, who lives opposite the phone box. Villagers rallied together to set up the book box after their mobile library service was cancelled. Over 100 books and a variety of movies and music CDs are available at this tiny library. 2..
People can put the books that they have read inside the phone box, and take away the books that they’d like to read. 3.. There is a regular check on the books to keep the phone box collection fresh.
4.. The phone box library is open every day around the clock and is lit at night. “ It’s very pleasing that the red phone box has been saved. More importantly, it can continue providing a service for us,” said the villagers.
A. It was used as an inventory to store books.
B. The books are of different kinds, ranging from cooking books to the classics.
C. They turned it into a mini library to cope with the shortage of libraries in their area.
D. However, not everyone can get access to the library.
E. The books in the library are always changing.
F. Anyone is free to come to read books there.

University — the best days of my life! I made lots of friends in my student dorm, went to great parties, joined the debating society... and, well, I did some work too — but I must admit that my lecturers were very patient with my tardiness (拖沓).
It is easy to look back at our university days in good ways but the truth is that when we first arrived on campus, most of us were out of our comfort zone. In fact, a survey of students at Imperial College London has showed that 3 out of 4 students experience high levels of stress, or a mental health condition, during their time at college. The survey, conducted by over a thousand students, also found that 70% of those that experience stress do so at least once a week, and 9% of them feel stressed constantly.
Kristy, a student at Exeter University, didn’t enjoy her first days in college. She says: “When I first got to university I don’t think I’d realized that I’d forgotten how to make friends. I’d been with the same school friends for seven years, and so I was trying to balance social success with academic success while learning how to look after myself at quite at a young age."
Dr. Ruth Caleb of the counseling service at Brunei University in London has some tips that should make life easier for students before they set off for university. She says: “Certain things that I think it would be very helpful for students to have put in place are an ability to do the practical things of life — to do the washing, to do the cleaning and so on— being able to cook. Budgeting(预算) is extremely important in university life.” And Caleb adds: “You should learn how to spend time on your own comfortably.”
I graduated and learnt how to take care of myself the hard way. I hope that new students these days remember to acquire some life skills before they make the big jump.

C. They fail to balance social and academic life.
D. They feel as comfortable as they expect.
3.Dr. Ruth Caleb thinks budgeting is of great importance because it_________.
A. helps students put everything in place
B. helps students live independently
C. makes students' university life easier
D. does good to students’ social relationships
4.Which is closest in meaning to the underlined part in the last paragraph?
