For the first nineteen months of her life, Helen Keller was like other pretty happy babies. Then a sudden illness destroyed her sight and hearing. Because she could not hear what other people were saying, the child could not learn to speak. For the next seven years, she lived in a world of darkness, without sounds or words.

The person who changed Helen’s world was her teacher, Anne Sullivan, who entered her life on March 3, 1887. Miss Sullivan had accepted a job, which seemed impossible. She agreed to teach a blind child who had never leaned to act like a human being, because no one had over been able to guide her in any way. No one could control Helen. She acted like a young animal, rushing widely around, throwing things, and hitting anyone whom she could reach. Who could believe that such a child could be taught?

But Anne Sullivan was a very special kind of teacher. She had been blind during part of her own childhood and had learned to read Braille, a system of writing that uses raised dots which can be felt by the fingers of a blind person. She had learned to see again after seven operations, but she had never forgotten the experience of being blind.

Miss Sullivan understood Helen. She loved her and believed she could teach her.

One day Helen didn’t understand the difference between “mug” and “water”．She became angry and threw the doll on the floor．In her quiet, dark world she didn’t feel sorry for doing it．Then her teacher took her out into the warm sunshine．They walked down to the well where someone was drawing water．Her teacher put her hand under the water and spelled the word “w－a－t－e－r” at the same time in her other hand．Suddenly, Helen felt an understanding．She knew then that “w－a－t－e－r” was the wonderful cool something flowing over her hand．That living word awakened her spirit, gave it light, hope, fun and set it free!

When the dog named Judy spotted the first sheep in her life, she did what comes naturally. The four-year-old dog set off racing after the sheep across several fields and, being a city animal, lost both her sheep and her sense of direction. A birdwatcher, armed with a telescope, found the pet sitting hopelessly on a rock. While he sounded the alarm, a student from Leeds climbed down the cliff to collect Judy.
The dog had been knocked unconscious(失去知觉的)at first but had survived by drinking water from a fresh scream at the base of the cliff. She may have fed on the body of a sheep which had also fallen over the edge. “The dog was very thin and hungry,” Steve Tregear said , “It was a very lucky dog. She survived because of a plentiful supply of fresh water,” he added.
It was, as Mr. Holden admitted, “a minor miracle(奇迹)”.
