An island with beautiful beaches and clear blue water full of colorful fish... this is Socotra(索科特拉岛). It sounds nice, but it doesn’t sound very unusual, doesn’t it? Well, there is a lot more to Socotra than that. You can see things there that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
Socotra is in the Indian Ocean, 250 kilometers east of Africa and 340 kilometers south of Yemen. The island separated (分离) from Africa six million years ago, and over that time it has developed its own special plant life. If you travel away from the beautiful beaches and up into the rocky mountains in the middle of the island, you may feel like you're going back in time.
Perhaps you will see the desert rose with its pretty pink flowers. The desert rose is a “bottle" tree. It stores water in its fat trunk. Like many of Socotra's plants, it has developed to survive in the island' s hot, dry weather.
One of the most unusual plants on Socotra is the "dragons’ blood "tree. It is shaped like an umbrella, with a lot of branches under a green top. The tree gets its name from the red sap(树液)that comes out when it is cut. This sap has been used for centuries as a medicine and to make red dye and paint.
Socotra isn't an easy place for tourists to visit. To get there, you need to fly from Yemen. There are only a few Hotels in its largest town, Hadibo, and the island doesn't have many good roads. The people there live a very simple life. But more and more visitors are coming to Socotra to see its special natural beauty.

When the plane arrived on Prince Edward Island in Canada, the snow was thick on the ground as they’d had about 100cm in 24 hours. That amount of snow was unusual for the island but I didn’t know that so I wasn’t worried. It didn’t look much thicker than snow I’d seen in Scotland. I was going to visit my friend, Chris, and he’d warned me it would be very cold and snowy. In fact I was feeling too warm as I had too many clothes on.
Chris met me in his car and we were quite near his house, which was only five kilometers from the airport, when we got stuck in the snow. So we phoned the road rescue services and a man and a truck arrived. He said we were the fifth car he’d pulled out of the snow that evening. He started the engine and he’d almost pulled us out ... Only to find that the truck had brought a whole pile of snow down from the sides of the road onto both vehicles and the truck was stuck too. He phoned to get an even larger truck to come and rescue us all. In the end it did!
Chris turned off the engine and we sat in the car to wait for the second truck to pull us out. I suggested he might keep the engine running so we could stay warm. He pointed out that the gas gauge was showing nearly empty and he was worried that we still had to get to his house. We finally arrived at his house at 4.30 in the morning -five hours after leaving the airport.

A. A larger truck came to help us. B. The truck pulled our car out.

A. The truck might not be able to find them. B. It was midnight and they might get too cold.
C. The car engine might not start again. D. They might not have enough gas to get home.
5.Why do you think the author wrote this piece?
A. To give advice about driving in the snow. B. To describe an event that happened to her.

Suppose you are 17 and live alone with no money. Years ago, that was my dad. His father died when he was 10, and as the oldest of five, he had to take care of his brothers and sisters. When his mother remarried, my dad had to leave home. With few choices, he joined the army, and worked as hard as he could for a job, a nice house, and a family. Having a dad like him has made me different from other people; with his help and advice, I set and meet my goals.
When I wanted to play basketball, my dad said, “Don’t let anyone tell you what you can or can’t do.” People thought I was too small to play, but he let me know I could. Looking back now, I know why my dad said this to me: it was something his father and mother never told him.
Time flew by. It was time for me to look for a job. A department store offered me a job as cart assistant. For the whole day, I pushed shopping carts. It was so cold that I couldn’t move my hands. But my dad wouldn’t let me give up, even though I wanted to. He kept saying it would get better, and he was right. I’ve worked there for a year now and I do much more than just push carts.
My dad helped me grow into the person I’m becoming. When I was younger, I was small. The other boys called me “Lil Nicky”. I hated it. I went to my dad for a help. He encouraged me and helped me make an exercise plan and I got to work.
In my life, there are different roads. My dad helped me get on the one I continue on today. I know I am just at the beginning. There will be difficulties. But there will always be my dad. Even when he is not physically here for me, his words won’t leave my mind.

The koala is unique (独特的) to Australia and is an important symbol of the country. The koala is found in open eucalypt (桉树) forests in south-east Queensland. Even if it is called koala bear, this animal has nothing to do with the actual bear. Koalas have thick fur and large cars.
Their broad, flat nose makes them look cute, similar to teddy bears. In fact koalas aren’t cute. They have sharp teeth and very sharp claws (爪)! Koalas are marsupials (有袋类). This means the mother carries her baby in a pocket while it develops, similar to a kangaroo. The baby koala lives in its mother’s pocket for the first six months of its life.
The name “koala” comes from a native Australian word that means “no drink”. The koalas get almost all their water from the eucalyptus leaves they eat. That’s where they get their food too.
Koalas eat only eucalyptus leaves. The eucalyptus trees are where the koalas live, it’s also where they sleep. Koalas sleep about nineteen hours a day!
Why do they sleep so much? Some people think it’s because they’re lazy. But koalas aren’t lazy. They sleep so much because there isn’t much nutrition (营养) in eucalyptus leaves. Koalas store hardly any fat, so they must save their energy. One way to do this is to move slowly and sleep a lot. After a day of sleeping they like to move around and eat just after sunset. They live alone most of the time. Koalas are very protective of their trees. If a koala sees another koala eating in its favorite tree, it might tell the other koala to leave by “barking” at it. Koalas do “talk” to each other.
Besides barks, the males make a deep grunting (呼噜的) sound.
The mothers and babies talk in soft clicking sounds. If they get scared they may scream like a baby. The koala is also an excellent swimmer.
They are able to cross rivers to escape from heavy flooding (泛滥).

He was just an ordinary postman. Day after day, he shuttled(穿梭) back and forth across the village. For him, life
was without waves.
One day, he was delivering mail as usual. When he looked up in the sky, he suddenly lost his balance. It was a little stone that tripped him up(绊倒). He observed the stone that had embarrassed(难堪) him, finding it strange but beautiful. In his eyes, this stone was like a lost jewel(宝石) covered with dust. The postman then placed the stone in his bag carefully. Because of this stone’s arrival, his day was lightened. He suddenly had a bold thought—I can build a castle with such beautiful stones. Hiroyuki Mahita Nesaden

Hotel Sayuri N06 4RL
Bukkoji-dori

Japan
16 September 2012
Dear Mr. Mahita,
I was given your name and the address of your hotel by two friends of ours who stayed at the Sayuri last June. They were Mr. James Collins and Mr. Arthur Drake. You would perhaps remember James Collins, as he speaks fluent Japanese.
Both Mr. Collins and Mr. Drake spoke very highly of your hotel and all the help they received from your staff when they visited Kyoto.
Following their recommendations, I would like to make a reservation at your hotel for myself and my friend, Mr. Peter Sullivan. We would like two single rooms as close to each other as possible, next-door would be ideal for us. We would like to be in Japan for New Year’s Day and to be there for Adult’s Day, which we have been told is on the second Monday in January. So we would like our reservations to be from 31 December 2012 to 20 January 2013. I have also been told that you can arrange an English-speaking guide, certainly for the Machiya, the town houses of Kyoto, but also for other aspects of life in Kyoto. Can you also advise me on car hire in Japan, please?
I look forward to hearing from you with confirmation of the booking and advice on prices and payment – how much do you want in advance as a deposit (押金)?
I should perhaps mention that unlike our friend Mr. Collins, neither myself nor Mr. Sullivan speaks a single word of Japanese (unfortunately!). But I am told that you speak excellent English.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours Sincerely
Ted Latham
