June 16th We arrived in South Africa today. Things aren't looking too good for England. We only drew the first game,1-1. The question now is: will we be able to enter next round? Well, our next two games are against Algeria(阿尔及利亚)and Slovenia(斯洛文尼亚),so our chances must be good. |
June 18th England vs. Algeria We almost missed the beginning of the game because we weren't able to find a taxi to get us to the stadium(体育场).The game was awful! Our great hope,Rooney, didn't do much. Sometimes I think he'll never be able to score for England again!Well, perhaps he'll be better in the next game. Hope so. |
June 23th England vs. Slovenia We didn't see this live as we couldn't get tickets. So we watched it on a big screen in the city centre. It was great there, the atmosphere(氛围)was fantastic. There were people from all over the world and we could hear lots of different languages. We met some people from Slovenia. It's Germany next. |
June 26th We managed to get tickets for the round of 16 game tomorrow. England vs. Germany. Just don't ask how much the tickets cost. We spent the rest of the day doing a bit of sightseeing. It was great but I wasn't able to stop thinking about the big game.I'm so excited. |

June 21 Friday Today I went to the beach. It was my first day at the ocean for many years. The sound and smell of the ocean brought back memories of the great family vacations when I was a child. We always went to the beach for a week in the summer. I remembered playing for hours in the sand with my sister and crying when I couldn't have any ice cream. Oh, and I remembered finding a huge jellyfish on the beach, and running away because I was scared! Amazing, really, the things you remember from your childhood… |
Comments |
Yeah, I remember going for long walks in the countryside. I guess I was only eight or nine. In the winter, my mom made soup, and I can still remember the wonderful smell! When we got home, I always went straight to sleep... Carla, Mexico |
What a great story! I remember going to the beach, too—on Christmas Day! My family lived in Australia when I was young. I remember waking up early. After we opened our presents, we always went to the beach and had a barbecue. Leung, Hong Kong |
The best memory I have is playing my first video game, Super Mario. I remember thinking that it was amazing. It was my tenth birthday and I still remember opening the box. Daisuke, Japan |

It was reported today that in China, 56% of people who write blogs(博客) do so as a personal diary and 83% use their blogs for sending messages to friends. It was also found that there is a strong East- West difference. In places like the US, blogs that offer information on news attract more readers but in China, blogs are more likely to be about sharing personal feelings.
It seems that bloggers can be divided into three types: IT bloggers, bloggers who record their ordinary feelings and media(媒体) bloggers.
When blogging first started, the IT people had the technological advantage and they took the chance to put their thoughts on the web. Some of these IT people now have had over a million people read their blogs.
The next wave of bloggers did not have any training as writers or in IT and wrote about normal daily life. Media bloggers, however, are trained writers, such as journalists and editors. When the many media bloggers showed up, the everyday bloggers lost most of their readers. Media bloggers have the advantage of knowing how to communicate well through the written words.
However, the normal bloggers are still out there and increasing in number. It seems that blogging is the new way to express your feelings. People feel like the world is listening to, or rather reading, their problems, even if they are not.

Saturday, June 16th
In the morning, we went camping along a path in Green Natural Park. We were happy because it was a sunny day. We were expecting an enjoyable two-day holiday. On the way, we kept singing and making jokes.
However, in the afternoon, when we finished our picnic at one o’clock, it was dark and windy. Soon, there was a shower. Unluckily, none of us brought an umbrella. We ran about but we could find no place to hide.
Twenty minutes passed and it was still raining, There were hours to go before we reached the campsite (野营地). It was even worse that our small compass (指南针) showed that we went to the wrong way. We had lost our way!
We had to make a quick decision as it was raining heavily. Chris said we could set up a tent to hide in, so Mary and Tom helped to set up the tent. Chris and I tried to make a fire to keep us warm. But we were unable to light the fire, as everything was wet. We dried ourselves, chatted and waited inside the tent. At about five o’clock, it stopped raining. In 2013 alone at least 20,000 African elephants were killed for their teeth. In South Africa over the last two years more than 2,200 rhinos were killed for their horns. These numbers are alarming, because current rates of illegal hunting are faster than birth rates, which could lead to extinction for these ecologically important creatures in their environment. Indeed, some elephant and rhino populations are on track to be locally extinct within the next decade.
If you are reading this, you may already be aware of these facts. But you might not know that wildlife trafficking (走私) not only threatens the existence of elephants and rhinos but is also leading to extinction of other species, such as tigers, tortoises, sea turtles — and the world’s most trafficked mammal(哺乳动物) — pangolins.
Pangolins are the only mammals that are entirely covered in tough scales(鳞), which makes them look very strong. But actually they are endangered mammals. There are eight different kinds of pangolins, four in Asia and four in Africa, and all are threatened with extinction. Although pangolins are protected throughout most of the countries where they live, high demand in East Asia, where the delicious pangolin meat is considered a delicacy and where their scales are used in traditional medicines, is driving an illegal trade in both live animals and pangolin parts. The number of pangolin trafficking is shocking. Experts believe that over the last 10 years more than 1 million pangolins were taken from the wild. It is estimated that between 40,000 and 81,250 pangolins were killed for the illegal trade in 2013 alone.
In February, the United States released a plan to deal with wildlife trafficking, which lays out the steps we will take to fight the illegal trade in wildlife, including pangolins. We are strengthening the carrying out of the plan, building international cooperation and contribution to protect wildlife, raising awareness to drive down the demand that is fuelling the illegal trade.
Get involved and remember World Wildlife Day (March 3) by spreading the plan. Use social media and tell everyone that now is the time to get serious about wildlife crime and end the demand that threatens species, big and small, from the huge elephant to the shy pangolin.
1.How many rhinos were killed in South Africa during the last two years?
A. More than 81,250. B. More than 20,000.
C. More than 2,200. D. More than 40,000.
2.How many kinds of pangolins are there in Asia?
A. Ten. B. Four. C. Six. D. Eight.
3.What does the phrase ‘carrying out’ mean in the fourth paragraph?
A. Putting the plan into effect. B. Moving the plan to a place.
C. Making a new plan. D. Taking the plan with you.
4.What does the writer want us to know after reading the passage?
A. Protecting wild animals is our duty.
B. Something about World Wildlife Day.
C. Something about illegal trade in East Asia.
D. Wild animals are in danger and we must get involved.

There was once a very wide tree in South Africa. 60 people could stand in its hollow trunk(空心树干). The tree reached over 18 meters into the sky and it was more than 1, 100 years old. But recently, that tree and others like it have died.1.
The tree was a baobab(猴面包树). Baobab trees grow in Africa and are called"the Tree of Life”.

2.They noticed that nine of the thirteen oldest baobab trees and five of the six largest died in the following 12 years.
Stephan Woodborne, one of the six scientists, says more research(研究)is needed to know why the trees died.3.That's because the trees clearly weren't sick. Besides, many were in national parks, so they were protected from human activities. They believe that increasing temperatures and changing rainy seasons have made it harder for baobabs to live.
"The big ones and the old ones caught the attention of people, Woodborne says. "But it's not just those. 4.People should be more environment-friendly. It is one way to help protect baobabs and other trees from the effects of climate change, according to Woodborne. 5.
“We need to think about the way we live our lives. "Woodborne says. "If we all change what we do a little bit, it will start to make a difference.”
A.That could mean using less energy(能源) and making less waste(废料), when possible.
B.Smaller and younger baobabs are dying too.
C.However, they think climate change may be the main reason.
D.Scientists are wondering why.
E.In 2005, scientists began a research to find out the age of more than 60 baobabs.
