It might sound like a terrible dream, but a new design from Dubai-based airline Emirates plans to remove windows from airplanes. Instead of real-life views of clouds and sky, first-class passengers will look out of “virtual(虚拟的)windows,” enjoying projected views of the world passing by. Emirates’ “windows” use real time high-tech camera technology to provide virtual views of the outside world.
Saj Ahmad,Chief analyst at Strategic Aero Research says,”Windowless airplanes sound great-however, in reality, it won’t happen for a number of reasons. For starters,in the event of an emergency, people in the plane often need to look out for reference points. Having visual awareness is important and in a windowless jet, they don’t exist-especially if there is an electrical fault which then means that the ‘electric’ windows do not work and you can’t see outside.” Ahmad was also concerned about passenger comfort. “Passengers simply do love the natural view outside,” he says. “There are also other problems---the change involved would certainly require new tests.”
Other futuristic airplane designs are going the opposite way. Boeing’s Dreamliner ---its most modern design---features large windows. Airbus has also designed a plane with transparent(透明的) walls that is presented at the 2011 Paris Air Show. Embraer has planned the Kyoto cabin, designed for its Lineage 1000E aircraft, which features large windows running along the majority of the walls of the cabin.
There could also be a move towards pilotless planes in the future---but Ahmad applies his doubts about windowless planes to drone-flown(无人驾驶的) planes too. “The idea of windowless planes is possible---that doesn’t mean it will happen,” says Ahmad. “The same applies to drone technology---but that doesn’t mean that tomorrow we’re suddenly going to see all airplanes being flown without pilots.”
1.What will Emirates’ new planes be like?
A.They will be pilotless.
B.They will have open windows.
C.They will present outside views on virtual windows.
D.They will provide all passengers with windowless experiences.
2.What does Saj Ahmad think of the virtual windows?
A.Useful. B.Expensive. C.Impractical. D.Comfortable.
3.How is the third paragraph developed?
A.By giving examples. B.By making comparisons.
C.By following space order. D.By explaining cause and effect.
4.What is the future of drone technology according to Saj Ahmad?
A.It needs more skilled engineers. B.It will take time to develop.
C.It will be widely applied. D.It is promising.

Google previously announced successful tests of machine learning systems designed to assist doctors. In one case, Google reported AI had examined eye diseases with equal accuracy to doctors. Other tests showed that machine learning can be used to study large amounts of patient data to predict future medical events.
Now the company has published two new studies showing a high level of success in identifying metastatic breast cancer. Metastatic means that cancer has spread from its main area to other parts of the body. Metastatic breast cancer is one of the deadliest, causing about 90 percent of all breast cancer deaths worldwide.
In metastatic breast cancer patients, the cancer often travels to nearby lymph nodes(淋巴结). Usually doctors examine lymph node tissue under a microscope to see whether cancer is present. Google notes that previous studies have shown that up to one-fourth of metastatic lymph node classifications end up being changed after a second examination. In addition, studies show that small metastatic material can be missed up to 67 percent of the time when examinations happen under extreme time restrictions.
Google says it created a mathematical algorithm(算法). The algorithm, called Lymph Node Assistant, is trained to find characteristics of tissue affected by metastatic cancer. When the system examined tissue images(图像), it was able to differentiate between metastatic cancer and non-cancer 99 percent of the time. In addition, the Lymph Node Assistant is highly effective at finding the positions of the cancers. Some of these positions would be too small for doctors themselves to identify. The research also showed that the algorithm method can reduce the usual time needed to examine the disease by about 50 percent.
But Google makes clear the AI-based system is not meant to replace the work of medical professionals. Instead, it is designed to reduce the number of false identifications and help doctors work faster and more effectively.
1.What is the main idea of Paragraph 1?
A.Google became a pioneer in training doctors.
B.Machine learning is able to stop future medical events.

A.One-fourth of the metastatic breast cancer patients die in the end.
B.Metastatic breast cancer is very difficult to identify.
C.It results in 90 percent of deaths of all cancers.
D.It can be identified after a second examination.
3.What is the advantage of Google’s new mathematical algorithm?
A.It can offer effective treatment.
B.It can tell the exact positions of cancers
C.It costs 99 percent less time than before.
D.It improves the accuracy of identifying cancers by 50%.
4.What influence will the mathematical algorithm bring?
A.False identification of cancers will be avoided.
B.More effective prevention of cancers will be found.
C.The number of medical professionals will be reduced.
D.Doctors can have a faster understanding of patients’ condition.

With a bag on his back and his hands in his pockets, Ye Tian sneaked around the fence, trying to find an entrance to the abandoned coking works without being noticed.
However, a guard dog gave Ye second thoughts. I'm not afraid of the gatekeeper-at least I can negotiate with him. But a dog? Forget it. I'll find another way. "While planning his special(uninvited)visit to the Beijing site, the 25-year-old did some research, but still failed to locate the entrance.
Ye is among the thousands who are interested in “taking adventures”, which they call urban exploration, or “urbex”. The aim is to explore structures-usually abandoned ruins or “hidden components of the man-made environments”.
Venturing into abandoned structures is one of the most common examples of urban exploration. Although targets vary from one country to another, high-profile abandoned structures usually include amusement parks, factories, power plants, missile silos, fallout shelters, hospitals, asylums, schools and houses.
Urban explorers are interested in visiting such sites, as they can discover “other parts of a city”and get to understand its history from a different angle.
Ye, who worked as an intern for a German company in Beijing for six months, said he enjoyed the contrast between the city's two sides- modern and crowded, compared with old-fashioned and silent-and wanted to learn more about the capital during his short stay.
Ye said that he was able to finally sneak in through another entrance, yet he was still asked to leave by a gatekeeper shortly after. But he then managed to get into a newly built residential block, climbed to the top and took a picture of the factory ruins at sunset.
“I will come back another day,” he said.

An invention to tackle canal plastics pollution was one of the highlights of the recent Amsterdam International Water Week.
The instrument, named"the great Bubble barrier" is a bubble screen that will remove plastic trash from the canals and therefore prevent it from flowing through to the river IJ and the North Sea.
“This is a very important step in reducing the amount of plastic in the oceans,”co-inventor Philip Ehrhorn said “It is a lot easier to stop it at an earlier stage instead of in the ocean.”
The tool works as follows. By pumping air through a tube with holes in it, which is located on the bottom of a waterway, a bubble barrier appears. This creates an upward thrust, which brings waste to the surface of the water.
By placing it diagonally in the waterway, the barrier uses the natural current to guide the plastic to the catchment system at the riverside. Both ships and fish can pass through the Bubble Barrier, but plastic will be stopped.
The invention's origins go back around four years, when Dutch students Saskia Studer, Anne Marieke Eveleens and Francis Zoet looked at the bubbles of a beer glass in a bar and thought they should do something similar. Ehrhorn, a German student, had the same idea. After he found out about the plans of the three Dutch women, they decided to join forces in Amsterdam.
“It is the first step of many”, Ehrhorn continued on the project. “First, the different rivers and canals in the Netherlands-cities, industrial areas, ports. In the following years ,we will go to the rest of Europe, Asia and elsewhere.”
“We have learned to live with water and have built a thriving society.”Nijhof said.

We know that reading is good for children. Now, a new study suggests that just being around books has its benefits. A team of researchers in Australia finds that growing up with a large library at home improves literacy (读写能力),number-sense, and even technological skills in later life. It appeared in the journal Social Science Research.
The researchers were exploring the advantages of scholarly culture. They were interested in a curious observation that some call the “radiation effect”. “Radiation effect is a situation where children grow up around books, but they don't read books. But somehow books benefit them, even though they don't read them as much as their parents wish them to.” Joanna Sikora, a sociologist in Australia. Joana and her colleagues analysed data collected between 2011 and 2015 by the Organization for Economic Development. The survey assessed the literacy, numeracy(计算能力), and technological competency of more than 160 ,000 adults from 31 countries. And it included a question about how many books participants had in their homes during adolescence. “What we were able to make clear was that people growing up around books had better literacy, numeracy and digital problem-solving skills than people who had fewer books growing up but had similar education levels, similar jobs, and even similar adult habits in terms of reading or working at various numeracy-improving activities.”
In fact, teens who only made it through high school but were raised in a bookish environment did as well in adulthood as college graduates who grew up in a house without books. Now, how might mere exposure lead to intellectual improvement? “If we grow up in a house, in a home where parents enjoy books, where books are given as birthday presents and valued, this is something that becomes a part of our identity and gives us this lifelong urge to always come close to books and read more than we would.”
So keep shelves piled with books. Your kids will not only be grateful, they’ll be more likely to be able to spell grateful correctly as well.
1.What's “radiation effect” according to the passage?
A.The terrible effect of radiation on the persons and things.
B.The good influence of bookish environment on adolescents.
C.The beneficial effect of reading books on adolescents.

A.Books bring a sense of identity and eagerness to read more.
B.Books helps to provide a chance to come close to the society.
C.Books are always given to adolescents as valuable presents.
D.Books will offer the teens an urge to make great achievements.
3.What's the author's attitude towards bookish environment?
A.opposed. B.neutral.
C.unclear. D.supportive.
4.What may the author probably be from?
A.A travel brochure. B.A biology textbook.
