Is the customer always right?1Shopping is very much a part of a country’s culture, and attitudes to shopping and consumers vary from country to country just as much as climate or taste in food.
Recent economic hardship has given the consumers increased power in Europe because shopkeepers fight to win their share of reduced disposable(可支配的)income. This has meant falling prices, plenty of special offers and a re-examination of what customer service really means.
2In restaurants in the south of the USA, for example, waiters compliment(恭维)you on your clothes, ask about your day, compliment you on your wisdom of your order and then return every ten minutes to refill your glass and make sure that everything is to your satisfaction.
Anyone who has waited 30 minutes to be served in a restaurant may possible dream of such customer service. 3In fact, different nationalities expect different types of service. As a friend of mine once told me “By the end of evening I had spent as much time talking to the waiter as to my wife.”
A Chinese-American friend loves telling people about how her Chinese mother shops for clothes. First of all she waits until they are on sale. 4And later she finds some small fault with the product and demands a further reduction. She never buys anything at the regular price. Could you imagine trying such ways in department stores in other countries?0
Attitudes to service are, of course, affected by employer’s attitudes to their workers. As American waiters heavily depend on tips, they have to provide more service. But is this fair? 5It might not be a case of “Is the customer always right?” but a case of “How much service is it fair to expect?”
A.People often point to America as an example of good customer service.
B.It is a question of expectations.
C.Do we think it is fair to ask shop assistants to work late evenings or on Sundays?
D.Then she asks for a discount until she gets an even better price.
E. The answer, it seems, depends on which country you are in.
F. The way we shop shows the way we get along with other people.
G. However, do Europeans really want US style service?

Five Simple Ways to Increase Your Intelligence
Your brain needs exercise just like a muscle. If you use it often and in the right ways, you will become a more skilled thinker and increase your ability to focus. Here are 5 simple ways anyone can squeeze a bit more productivity out of the old gray matter.
1._______
This is a hard sell. People love vegetating in front of the television, myself included more often than I’d like. The problem is watching television doesn’t use your mental capacity or allow it to recharge. It’s like having the energy sapped out of a muscle without the health benefits of exercise.
When you feel like relaxing, try reading a book instead. If you’re too tired, listen to some music. When you’re with your friends or family, leave the tube off and have a conversation. All of these things use your mind more than television and allow you to relax.
2._______
I used to think that I’d learn more by not exercising and using the time to read a book instead. But I realized that time spent exercising always leads to greater learning because it improves productivity during the time afterwards. Using your body clears your head and creates a wave of energy. Afterwards, you feel invigorated and can concentrate more easily.
3.______
Many people like to read popular suspense fiction, but generally these books aren’t mentally stimulating. If you want to improve your thinking and writing ability you should read books that make you focus. Reading a classic novel can change your view of the world and will make you think in more precise, elegant English. Don’t be afraid to look up a word if you don’t know it, and don’t be afraid of dense passages. Take your time, re-read when necessary, and you’ll soon grow accustomed to the author’s style.
4._______
Nothing makes it harder to concentrate than sleep deprivation (剥夺睡眠). You’ll be most energetic if you go to bed early and don’t sleep more than 8 hours. If you stay up late and compensate(弥补)by sleeping late, you’ll wake up lethargic(无精打采) and have trouble focusing. In my experience the early morning hours are the most tranquil and productive. Waking up early gives you more productive hours and maximizes (使……最大化)your mental acuity(敏锐) all day.
If you have the opportunity, take 10-20 minute naps when you are hit with a wave of drowsiness. Anything longer will make you lethargic, but a short nap will refresh you.
I hope you aren’t disappointed that none of the techniques I’ve proposed are revolutionary. But simple, unexciting answers are often the most valid. The challenge is having the will to adhere to them. If you succeed in following these 5 tips, you’ll be rewarded with increased mental acuity and retention of knowledge.

下面文章中有5处(第66~70题)需要添加小标题。请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中选出符合各段意思的小标题,并在答题卡上将相应选项的标号涂黑。选项中有一项是多余选项。
A. Explore All Your Talents
B. Be Ready for the Up-coming Competition
C. Set a Down-to-Earth Goal
D. Prepare Yourself Emotionally
E. Look for a Competitive College
F. Consider Talent Search Programs in Junior High
Many aspects of college planning are the same for most college-bound students. However, if you’re in any academically gifted and talented program, you have additional things to think about. Here are some actions you should consider.
66.______
Talent search programs provide educational opportunities for seventh-and eighth-graders who are mathematically or verbally talented. Some of these programs use SAT scores to identify academically gifted students. Although most students take the SAT in junior or senior year of high school, gifted and talented student often take it earlier.
67. ______
Many gifted students have the potential to succeed in multiple academic areas. Don't miss opportunities by focusing too early on one that you excel in; carefully examine all your strengths and interests. Discover what you really like to study and the topics you may want to pursue in college. Pursue your interest and passion for learning to the fullest extent possible while you’re still in high school.
68. ______
Gifted students often feel that they have to be accepted by very competitive colleges to be considered successful. And while a competitive college may be the right place for you, don’t let selectivity be the only factor. The most important aspect of college planning is finding a college that’s a good fit.
69. ______
Many gifted students are used to being at the top of their junior high and high school classes. Be prepared to meet other gifted students in college — students who do just as well as you, or better, in the classroom. It can be unsettling. Handle it by staying focused on your own studies and skills and aiming to do your personal best.
70. ______
Although your academic qualifications and abilities may exceed those of your high school classmates, your age is the same as theirs. High school is a time for adolescence, while college requires emotional maturity. A 15-year-old high school graduate may not be prepared to live on a campus 1,000 miles from home with other students who are 18 and older. Think about what you are ready for emotionally, as well as academically, when you’re narrowing down your college list.

A. Control of Respiration B. Basic tips for preserving cut flowers C. Role of Respiration D. Most Important Aspect of Flower Care E. Need for Clean Water F. Ways of Stopping Respiration |
1.
While everybody enjoys fresh cut flowers around his house, few people know how to keep them for as long as possible. This may be done by keeping in mind a few simple facts. The key to keeping fresh cut flowers for a week or more without floral preservatives(which contain biocides that kill bacteria and fungus) is to keep the water fresh and the stems free of air pockets so they can continue to draw up water.
2.
An important thing to remember about cut flowers is that they are sensitive to temperature. For example, studies have shown that cut carnations(康乃馨) retain their freshness eight times longer when kept at 12℃ than when kept at 26℃. Keeping freshly harvested flowers at the right temperatures is probably the most important aspect of flower care.
3.
Flowers are not intended by nature to live very long. Their biological purpose is simply to attract birds or insects, such as bees, for pollination (授粉). After that, they quickly dry up and die. The process by which flowers consume oxygen and produce carbon dioxide, called respiration (呼吸), generates the energy the flower needs to give the flower its shape and colour. The making of seeds also depends on this energy. While all living things respire, flowers have a high level of respiration. A result of all this respiration is heat, and for flowers the level of heat relative to the mass of the flower is very high. Respiration also brings about the eventual death of the flower. Thus the greater the level of respiration, the sooner the flower dies.
4.
How, then, to control the rate at which flowers die? By controlling respiration. How is respiration controlled? By controlling temperature. We know that respiration produces heat, but the reverse is also true. Thus by maintaining low temperatures, respiration is reduced and the cut flower will age more slowly.
5.
Another vital factor in keeping cut flowers is the quality of the water in which they are placed. Flowers find it difficult to “drink” water that is dirty or otherwise polluted. Even when water looks and smells clean, it almost certainly contains harmful substances that can endanger the flowers. To rid the water of these unwanted substances, household chlorine bleach (含氯漂白剂) can be used in small quantities. It is recommended that 15 drops of chlorine bleach(at 4% solution) be added to each litre of water. The water and solution should also be replaced each day.

It’s sometimes hard to understand a teenager. It’s even harder if a teenager doesn’t agree with you . 1.
Listen to what the teenager has to say. 2. While you may not entirely agree with what he’s saying, the tension will be lessened if the teenager feels like you are listening and trying to understand him. Also, he might return the favor and give you the chance to talk as well. It’s best to have a conversation where both of your opinions matter rather than fight and possibly hurt each other in the process.
Understand that while teenager may appear grown up and perhaps even sound matured, his mind has not fully developed, and he cannot think like an adult all the time. 3. However, this doesn’t mean you’re completely right or he deserves to be ridiculed or treated like a child.
4. However, remember that the teenager should understand when “no” is “no”. Avoid bringing up a compromise every time you disagree on something. This might teach him that he can always get away with what he wants ,whenever he wants it.
If the conversation launches into an argument, stop it. Tell him that you both need to calm down and think clearly or the problem will never be solved. If he refuses to listen to you and continues arguing , step out of the room and allow time for both of you to settle down. Do not scold him or shout back. Your words will possibly be lost on the teenager since you both are too angry to listen to each other. 5.He still needs to learn, and he doesn’t know everything.
A.Avoid having a bad tone, including accusations in your words.
B.This article tells you how to disagree with a teenager in a kind manner.
C.Bring up the topic after a while and make sure you listen to each other patiently.
D.People like being listened to, so give him the chance to express his opinion.
E.Come up with a compromise if the situation allows one.
F.Find the good points the teenager has and mention the negative points as well.
