During the high school career, students may begin to question the importance of a college education. They might find themselves asking, “Why is it important to go to college?” The answer is that, more than ever, college graduates enjoy much greater opportunities available to them than those who have not received a college education.
For many high school students, being able to immediately generate an income after graduation is an appealing thought. They may also be affected by the rising cost of tuition, and while it is true that a higher education may be one of the largest expenses you will ever face, the importance of a college education has become quite evident in terms of earning potential within today’s economy.
Why should you go to college? One important answer to this question is more opportunity. As opposed to generations of the past, high school graduates today are unable to obtain high-paying jobs that were once available. The U.S. has been transformed from a manufacturing-based economy to an economy based on knowledge, and the importance of a college education today can be compared to that of a high school education forty years ago. It serves as the gateway to better options and more opportunity.
There are additional reasons as to why it is important to go to college. When students experience a post secondary education, they have the opportunity to read books and listen to the lectures of top experts in their fields. This encourages students to think, ask questions, and explore new ideas, which allows for additional growth and development and provides college graduates with more opportunities in the job market over those who have not experienced a higher education.
The importance of a college education is also stressed because of the opportunity to gain valuable resources during the study. The more connections which are collected during your college career, the more options you will have when you begin your job search. Once you have ended your job search and have started your career, however, the importance of a college education has not been exhausted. Having a college degree often provides for greater promotion opportunity.
So, why should you go to college? The reasoning does not begin and end with the job aspect. A good education is beneficial from many different viewpoints, and though the importance of a college education is quite evident for many high school students, what is often not as clear is how they will pay for that education.
1.Why do some high school graduates prefer working to college study?
A.To obtain high-paying jobs. B.To earn money at an early age.

How sharks navigate the vast and seemingly featureless ocean has long been a mystery. Now there's evidence they may follow their noses. Sharks rely on their sense of smell to help chart a path through the ever-shifting waters of the deep seas, according to a new study. Scientists have supposed that the animals navigate by monitoring smell clues or the Earth's magnetic field, but no one knew for sure.
In new experiments near San Diego, scientists ferried wild leopard sharks about 6 miles(10 kilometers)away from their preferred habitats, fitted them with tracking devices, and stuffed some of the animals' noses with cotton balls. Just 30 minutes after being released facing the wrong way, sharks with full use of their smells made a corrective U-turn and then headed straight back to shore, "says study leader Andrew Nosal, a researcher at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, California. Sharks with stuffed noses, meanwhile, "appeared lost, "wandering aimlessly and
swimming more slowly than those that could smell freely.
To test sharks' sense of direction, Nosal and colleagues captured several dozen leopard sharks, a small species found along the coast from Washington State to northern Mexico.
After blocking some of the animals' noses, the scientists then took the animals on a cruise to deeper waters before slipping them, safe and unharmed, back into the sea. Even the sharks with plugged noses made it partway back to shore before their tracking devices fell off. But those with unplugged noses "took very straight paths" toward home. Nosal supposes the sharks likely sniffed out chemical molecules found in higher and higher doses nearer to land.
Other scientists, however, remain unconvinced. Maybe the animals with plugged noses "were confused by the fact that they had something stuffed in their nose," says Kim Holland, a marine biologist at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. It's also unlikely the animals were following a smell that grew stronger closer to land, adds Jayne Gardiner, a sensory biologist at the New College of Florida. Animals that couldn't smell a thing still turned toward the beach, which "suggests something else is really guiding them," she says.
Study leader Nosal responds that sharks with cotton-stuffed nose willingly eat, suggesting that a congested nose doesn't upset them much. He agrees that sharks use a variety of markers to find their way, "but the point is that smell participates in navigation, "he says. "Our study was only the first step in solving this mystery. "
1.This passage is mainly about ________.
A.why sharks have a good sense of smell B.why sharks are clever animals

C.After being taken to deeper waters, sharks with plugged noses couldn't make it to the shore.
D.The sharks in the experiments aren't willing to eat due to the plugged noses.
3.We can infer from the passage that________.
A.there are various markers for sharks to find their way and eyes play an important role in it
B.some scientists hold different opinions from the findings of the new study
C.the new study has completely solved the mystery of sharks' easy navigation in the vast ocean
D.the sharks likely sniffed out chemical molecules found in higher doses nearer to land
4.What's the purpose of writing this passage?
A.To call on people to protect the sharks.
B.To present different theories on the mystery of the sharks.
C.To let people learn more about the sharks.
D.To inform the readers of the findings of a new study on shark.

A hospital has been forced to ban Pokemon Go players from the site after a monster hub (妖怪枢纽站) was found in the A&E department. Royal Stoke University Hospital discovered that its casualty unit(急诊室) is on the same spot as a Pokemon Go ‘gym’ —— where players can train their newly caught Nintendo creatures.
The University Hospitals of North Midlands Trust agreed last week that patients can play Pokemon Go on wards because walking around is healthy. But the Trust has been forced to post a warning on its website about public access to A&E. It said if Pokemon Go becomes a major annoyance it would ask Nintendo—— which decides on the locations of the virtual gyms according using GPS——to have it removed from the premises(道馆).
Kevin Parker, associate chief nurse, said, “Members of the public who do not need to be at Royal Stoke should not attempt to enter A&E or any other part of the hospital building to play the game. The A&E department is incredibly busy this summer. We want the public to understand that anybody who visits the hospital solely to play the game will provide an unwanted distraction to the important work of the hospital. I’m also aware of various reports in the media of unsafe areas that the game has been played in.”
“Royal Stoke University Hospital is a safe area where gamers can enjoy Pokemon Go.” Michelle Harris, the Trust’s manager, said the game could still be played by those already in hospital. “We recognize that the Pokemon Go game encourages walking and exercise, which is something that the Trust is equally keen to promote,” she said.
There are a number of “walking routes” established throughout the Trust that can be used to combine walking and playing the game. “Walking just 30 minutes, five times a week, can help reduce the risk of preventable illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.”
There have been several warnings about the game since its UK release. Last week a group of teenagers in Wiltshire were left stranded almost 100ft underground after they got carried away searching for Pokemon Go characters. The four boys, aged 16 and 17, ended up getting lost and had to wait to get a phone signal before they could call for help. Eventually, they contacted Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue team, who took them to safety. Damien Bence, of the fire and rescue team, said: “Pokemon Go is obviously leading people into dangerous situations.”
1.It seems that Pokemon Go is a game______.
A.encouraging players to walk and exercise instead of staying indoors
B.helping cure such diseases as obesity, diabetes and heart disease
C.designed to help patients in hospital recover sooner
D.warning teenagers of the places easy to get lost or attacked
2.The A&E department is incredibly busy because________.
A.more patients’ arrival increases the workload of the A&E department
B.doctors’ playing the game makes the A&E department less efficient
C.players’ injury increases the workload of the A&E department
D.players’ arrival disturbs the work of the A&E department
3.The passage is mainly about________.
A.the popularity of Pokemon Go since its UK release
B.the applications of Pokemon Go in hospitals since its UK release
C.the negative effects of Pokemon Go since its UK release
D.the establishment of Pokemon Go virtual gyms since its UK release

Fireworks have been enjoyed by countless people ever since they were invented in China during the Tang Dynasty hundreds of years ago. From small family gatherings (团聚) to huge global celebrations, there isn’t a party that couldn’t be made more fun with a few fireworks. But it seems that there’s a big price to pay for some brief beauty and fun.
It’s been discovered that fireworks contain metals such as copper (铜) and lead, in addition to other pollutants like perchlorates (高氯酸盐). According to the Environmental Protection Agency, perchlorates can form naturally or be made. They are an industrial chemical used in rocket fuel and explosives (炸药), and are soluble (可溶解的) in water.
This is a reason for concern because perchlorates negatively affect the thyroid gland (甲状腺), which influences important bodily functions like blood pressure and heart rate.
Furthermore, a study conducted by Terry Gordon, a professor at New York University, examined the emissions(排放物) whose sizes were big enough to enter the lungs. They concluded that these emissions may lead to various dangerous conditions like cancer, heart attacks, and strokes (中风).
It is worth noticing, however, that no studies have proven the connctions between these conditions and the dangerous chemicals in fireworks.
However, the negative effects of firework emissions can be observed in birds. Britain’s Royal Society for the Protection of Birds warns against setting off fireworks close to wildlife areas as they may cause confusion among birds.
In 2010, an incident involving 5,000 red-winged blackbirds falling out of the sky on New Year’s Eve in Arkansas, US supported this idea. A fireworks display held at a nesting ground for blackbirds led to the birds’ night sight being affected, causing them to fall to their deaths.
Arguably (可以说), the use of fireworks during celebrations may be because people don’t realize how they pollute our environment. Companies and researchers could take this cue (线索) and find other new, eco-friendly ways.
After all, for all the beauty fireworks bring, there’s no better beauty than that of our planet’s.
1.According to the article, perchlorates contained in fireworks ______.
A.do harm to the thyroid gland
B.raise the risk of cancer
C.are dangerous when put in water
D.are made from copper and lead
2.Terry Gordon concluded from his research that ______.
A.fireworks are directly connected with lung cancer
B.the waste from fireworks could threaten our body
C.chemicals in fireworks could increase our blood pressure
D.our body is strong enough to fight against the pollutants in fireworks
3.What is the author’s attitude toward the use of fireworks?
A.Positive. B.Negative.
C.Indifferent. D.Neutral.

It’s often said that the rise of social media has revolutionized (彻底改变) communication. With smartphones and social networking apps, we can write to our family and friends whenever we like. But while social media has brought us convenience, it also has its problems, such as misunderstandings in communication.
Quite often, people misunderstand what’s written on social media. According to a story published on The Conversation on March 8, sarcasm (讽刺), in particular, can be very difficult to notice in a written message.
Sarcasm is a kind of irony (反语): It’s when we say something, but really mean the opposite. For example, a message from a friend the day before a math exam that says “I’m so looking forward to tomorrow!” is obviously sarcasm.
Sarcasm before the rise of social media and mobile phones was mostly used in speech and face to face. That made sarcasm easier, because you could accompany your words with a facial gesture and a tone (语气) of voice that would help others get your message. You had a good chance of being understood and receiving a laugh or an understanding glance.
And yet when we text or write something online, a lot of that information goes missing. “There are no facial hints, no tones or maybe even a delayed response if a person can’t text you back immediately,” wrote The Conversation. “And if you don’t know the person all that well, there goes your last possible hint: history.”
To help avoid misunderstandings, people who use platforms such as Twitter often include the hashtag ﹟sarcasm – although this is like having to explain a joke when people don’t laugh at it, which destroys the point of sarcasm in the first place.
And it isn’t only sarcasm that can get lost in electronic communications. It’s also hard to notice things such as indifference (冷漠).
“One of the problems with digital communication, when it relies purely on text, is that this sucks (抽离) the empathy (情感共鸣) out of the communication. So it can lead to miscommunication,” linguist Vyv Evans, author of The Emoji Code, told USA Today. “This is where emojis come into their own. They put the body language back, so people can better read emotional intent (目的).”
However, even though there are hundreds of different emojis(表情符号) to choose from, there’s still no replacement for good old-fashioned face-to-face communication.
1.What does the underlined sentence in the third paragraph mean according to the context?
A.They can’t wait to take the exam.
B.They are well-prepared for the exam.
C.They’re not looking forward to taking the exam at all.
D.The exam might be too difficult for them.
2.What might lead to the words we write online being misunderstood, according to the Conversation?
A.The use of new internet words and phrases.
B.The complicated relationship between people.
C.The absence of facial expressions and tones.
D.Responding to other people too quickly.
3.What does Vyv Evans think is a possible way to avoid miscommunication online?
A.Using emojis, as they can display body language.
B.Expressing fewer personal feelings.
C.Sending voice messages instead of text messages.
D.Using a hashtag before making jokes.
4.What is the article mainly about?
A.The convenience of online communication.
B.Some misunderstandings that come with digital communication.
C.A good replacement for face-to-face communication.
D.Some reasons for the popularity of emojis.

Slang(俚语) is very informal language which is often used by young people. It’s hard to keep up to date with it as new words and phrases appear and evolve (发展). Living in a multicultural society has an effect on language, especially on the young, whose friends are often from a mix of backgrounds. TV and music also have a big impact. A complete list of slang is difficult to make; by the time it was finished, the list would be out of date. However, here are a few examples:
Safe, sorted, sound, cool or wicked all mean “That’s good” or “I understand”.
Instead of using different tag questions (附加疑问句) like “… isn’t it?”, “… can’t you?” or “… don’t they?”, people use “innit”.
For example, “He can dance really well, innit!” (= He can dance really well, can’t he?) or “They always say that, innit.” (= They always say that, don’t they?)
Instead of saying “very”, “really” or “completely” use “well”, for example, “I’m well tired” or “You got it well wrong!”
“Whatever” means “I don’t care”, for example, A: “But the teacher says we can’t leave until we’ve finished.” B: “Whatever. I’m going.”
“He’s fine” or “he’s fit” both mean “He’s good-looking”. Fine and fit can describe a boy or a girl.
Not everybody uses slang and not everybody likes it. A school in the north of England recently told its pupils to stop using slang words such as “hiya” (hello), “cheers” and “ta” (both mean “thank you”) if they wanted to get a place at university or a good job.
When British people use language like this, it’s no surprise that some say they can’t understand native speakers. But perhaps learners don’t need to worry so much. Research shows that most of the English spoken around the world today is between non-native speakers of the language.
So, how important is it to understand these slang words and expressions? If you watch films or TV in English, read magazines in English, chat online in English or are interested in English song lyrics, then understanding slang can be very useful. You probably won’t see much slang in your English examination, though.
1.Why is it hard to make a complete list of slang, according to the article?
A.Because many slang words are outdated.
B.Because it is mostly used by young people.
C.Because modern slang changes very quickly.
D.Because it comes from different cultural backgrounds.
2.What can we learn about slang from the text?
A.It prevents language from evolving.
B.It is also spread through TV and music.
C.It is more popular in the UK than in the US.
D.It has found its way into formal written English.
3.What can we conclude from the text?
A.Knowing little slang doesn’t greatly affect how one communicates.
B.Many UK schools are encouraging students to use slang.
C.It is essential for English learners to study some British slang.
D.More English is spoken by native speakers than by non-native speakers.

It's extremely rare to find characters that excited such enthusiasm in the British population as Margaret Thatcher once did. There was no middle ground, no sitting on the fence and that was just the way she like it.
Back in the 70s—thanks to a combination of incapable Conservative and Labour prime ministers (all male) and the unelected and militant union leaders who didn't always have their members' best interests at heart—the country was on its knees, virtually bankrupt and covered in uncollected rubbish due to a massive public sector strike.
It was no wonder the people saw hope in Margaret Thatcher and accordingly voted her into power when, depending on where you were standing at the time, she either saved Great Britain or ruined people's lives.
Personally, for me it was the former and I could see how she improved the prospects and desires of the working classes to better themselves. I was one of them. At the same time I can also understand why people in the North of England who suffered after the close of the last remaining pits, factories and manufacturing industries didn’t see it that way.
But what I don't understand is how some folk think it’s OK to be so openly disrespectful in her death just because it's her.
The so-called ''death parties'' are sickening, attended as they mostly are by people who probably don't quite know who she is let alone who lived under her rule.
The Brighton teacher Romany Blythe, who organized one of the parties, actually compared her to Hitler. But Margaret didn't devote herself to genocide—murder of a whole race, neither did she attempt to take over Europe and control its people. She only went to war once in order to protect a British outpost in the South Atlantic after it was threatened and invaded by the Argentineans. And there lies the real reason I think she inspires such unreasonable hatred—because she was a woman. She clearly had no choice but to get the country back on its feet. Not one of them has half the courage to get us out of the current mess we’re in. They're all too bothered about being popular, so they spend all their time trying to please all of the people all of the time. It's just not possible—as the lady herself proved.

As globalization continues to make the world a smaller place, and goods become more accessible across borders, concerns about food safety in the AsiaPacific region have steadily risen over the years. An APEC forum is being held in Beijing, to find ways to better address the problem.
156 participants from 19 APEC economies and 4 non-APEC members attended the APEC Food Safety Cooperation Forum. Created 7 years ago, the forum has been actively looking for ways to strengthen food safety standard in the region, without affecting trade.
“As consumers are faced with more varieties of food, the potential food safety risk also becomes bigger. This forum has helped APEC economies to cooperate in supervision (监督), exchange information, and improve the overall food safety standard in the AsiaPacific region,” said director of China's General Administration of Quality Supervision Wu Qinghai.
For the first time the forum has brought together highlevel regulators, academics, and industry stakeholders to talk about their respective roles in safety supervision. They say governments alone cannot shoulder this heavy duty.
In China, the continuous food safety problems have greatly hurt consumers' confidence in domestic products; therefore more turned to imports. However, problems related to quality of those imported goods also began to show. In July this year, more than 400 batches (批)of food imports from 35 countries and regions were found substandard by the country's top quality supervisor.

Friendly doctors are “bad for their patients’ health”, researchers have warned as a new study revealed two thirds of young doctors struggle to be truthful with patients they like.
Blurring (使……模糊) the lines between social and professional relationships can affect the level of care offered and prevent patients from being honest about important side effects.
“Doctors should avoid adding patients as friends on Facebook, they should not hug or allow patients to call them by their first names.” regulators have warned. “Those who break the boundaries will face some punishment.”
It comes as a survey of 338 oncologists (肿瘤科医生) under the age of 40, found 59 per cent said they found it difficult to tell the truth to those patients they liked. Sixty per cent of respondents said if doctors felt too close to their patients, it could prevent them from making objective decisions about a person’s care.
Lesley Fallowfield, of Brighton and Sussex Medical School, said: “Oncology is a profession that can be enormously rewarding but is filled with many challenges. Young oncologists have to master dealing with anxious patients who are facing a life-threatening disease; conveying the true prognosis (预后); discussing the complexity of modern treatments; and explaining the unavailability of some drugs, the side-effects of treatment, and likely treatment aims.”
But she said, “Those doctors who have entered the profession in the age of the ‘Internet world’are more likely to fall victim to blurring the professional boundaries with patients.”
She said: “The difficulty, if you hug and kiss patients, if you allow them to call you by your first name, is that quickly the relationship can become confused as a social one rather than a professional one. Doctors become confused, ‘I really like this person, how can I bear to tell them that they’re going to die?’ They find it more difficult to be objective.”
1.Why are friendly doctors bad for their patients’health?
A.They don’t like to cheat patients.
B.They are not good at treating patients.
C.They find it not easier to be objective to the patients.
D.They seldom blur the relationship with patients.
2.What should doctors do according to the regulations?
A.Add patients as friends on Facebook.
B.Have close connection with patients in life.
C.Always be cold to patients.
D.Keep a proper distance to patients.
3.Which opinion will Lesley Fallowfield agree with?
A.Oncology is a rewarding profession without challenges.
B.The Internet makes it easier for young doctors to break the boundaries.
C.It’s not the duty of doctors to deal with patients’ anxiety.
D.Becoming friends with patients will help them recover soon.
4.Young oncologists will face the following challenges except_____________.
A.dealing with a lot of life-threatening diseases
B.discussing difficulties of treatment with patients
C.explaining the reason for the lack of some medicine
D.informing patients of the possible results of the treatment
