Taking away a city’s rubbish is a big job. Every day trucks come into a city to collect it. Most rubbish is made up of things we can’t eat or use. If we kept these things we would soon have a mountain of rubbish.
In some cities the rubbish is collected and taken outside of city to a dump(垃圾堆).Often the city dump is placed where the ground is low or there is a big hole. The kitchen rubbish is broken into small pieces and sent into the sewage (排污) system. The sewage system takes away the used water from toilets(厕所), bathtubs and other places.
To keep mice(老鼠) and flies away, some earth is used to cover the newly dumped rubbish. Later, grass may be planted on the rubbish-filled land. Finally, a house or a school may be built there, and then you’d never know that this had once been an old rubbish dump.
In other cities the rubbish is burnt in special places. The fire burns everything but the metal(金属). The metal can be reused and recycled. The food parts of rubbish are put in special piles(堆) where they slowly change into something called humus, which looks like black earth. It is rich with the kinds of things that feed plants and help them grow.
1.The passage is mostly about _____________.
A.environment B.travel C.history D.education
2.How can we keep the mice and flies away?
A.Some water is used to cover the rubbish. B.Some earth can be used to cover the rubbish.

3.How should we take care of a used metal box?
A.By burning it off. B.By putting it in water.

Did you know that each day one person in the US throws away 4.4 pounds of rubbish? Almost every month, we throw away our own rubbish in packaging alone. Packaging ( including boxes, bags, etc) comes to our homes with the things we have bought. Several weeks ago, the TV news said that in a city in Italy, tons of rubbish were piled up in the streets, and the smell was rather terrible. What can we do to help? We should get to know the following Rs.
To reduce means to make less rubbish That is one of the first things we all should do for the environment. Reduce your rubbish by doing things like packing your lunch in reusable containers(可再利用的容器),taking smaller potions(份)at dinner so you don't waste food when you have had enough, writing on both sides of paper, and using less water when taking a shower.
To reuse is to use things again. Think about the bags you get from the store. They can be reused to carry your lunch, to hold your rubbish, or to collect used cans. You can even take them back to the store the next time to carry your things instead of getting a new bag!
Recycling is an important part of keeping our planet clean and green. It can also save energy. Be sure that you don't throw things in the rubbish that can be recycled to make something else. Paper, plastic, cans and bottles can all be recycled, but food, electrical waste and mobile phones can't. When you are not sure whether something can be recycled, go to your parents and teachers for advice.
Follow the three Rs, and every one of us can do something to save the Earth. It is also the best way to save ourselves.
1.The first paragraph of the passage implies(暗示) that .
A. packaging should be given up
B. Italy is too dirty for us to visit
C. the US produces most rubbish
D. the Earth is becoming dirtier
2.The writer seems to ask people to reuse the bags .
A. only as rubbish bags
B. only for carrying other things

Just like you, children in Germany have to go to school every day. One big difference, however, is the time they have to be at school. German school children have to be at their desks between 7:30—8:15 a.m.(depending on which part of Germany they live in).
There are usually five or six lessons each day. School subjects are pretty similar to those you might have (maths, science, music, art, P.E., etc). There is normally a five to ten minutes' break between each lesson, with two big breaks that last for 20 minutes so that there is a chance to go and play outside on the playground.
There aren't normally lessons after lunch in German schools—imagine that! In fact, in the past, many schools did not offer lunch at all, but nowadays, there are usually afternoon clubs, homework workshops and activities to keep pupils occupied until their parents get home from work.
German school children get 15 weeks of holiday each year. The school holidays are quite similar to those in the UK and, of course, the long six week summer holiday is always the one that everyone looks forward to the most!

•Children in Germany don't start school until they are six years old.
•Most German schools don't have a school uniform.
